Iowa dual thread - Jan 31

Last evening’s dual meet against Iowa provided me the most fun I’ve had at a dual since the 19-18 win against Ohio State on February 3, 2018. I will always consider Iowa a worthy opponent, and the environment and wrestling lived up to its billing, as the crowd of 15,998 (ties indoor attendance record) was loud and proud and the wrestling fabulous. I’ve tried to capture a few thoughts about the bouts last evening, a brief summary of the season so for the nine starters that wrestled, and what’s ahead. After that I’ll end on a few comments that made the day extra special for me.

125: Luke Lilledahl (12-1) broke out the offense in a big way, dominant in a technical fall victory against #23 Cruz. It was his most impressive offensive explosion on the season, as his other five tech falls were against lesser competition. His best win on the season is against #6 Smith (NEB), as Lilledahl won’t have a great resume by season’s end. Yet to come is #16 McCrone (tOSU), as the highest ranked opponent yet to wrestle in the regular season. Can only wrestle the guy they put in front of you, so thus far the season is a success, the schedule just didn’t provide Lilledahl with many top guys. The postseason shall be interesting, as the competition will get tougher for Lilledahl. Still he likes the limelight and isn’t fazed by pressure. The Peterson loss is in the rearview mirror.

141: Beau Bartlett (13-0) won in workmanlike fashion. Nothing fancy, just a solid never-in-trouble four point win. Has season wins against #4 Hardy (NEB), #12 Edmonds (MIZZ) and #15 Olivieri (RUT), so a decent resume so far. Upcoming bouts against #11 Lemley (MICH), #1 Mendez (tOSU) and #16 Pucino (ILL), so he has his work cut out. The Mendez bout will be good fun, and they may face each other three times this season.

149: Shayne Van Ness (12-1) put on a show against #4 Parco (#2 on Intermat). A close 4-4 bout in the first period ended as a major decision for Van Ness as the crowd was going bananas. Solid, solid, dominating win against a very talented opponent. Van Ness has already put the #2 Lovett (NEB) loss behind him. This win, against Parco was by far his best win of the season. He has #9 D’Emilio (tOSU) and #15 Webster (ILL) ahead, among others before the postseason.

157: Tyler Kasak (13-0) also put on a show, defeating #1 Teemer by decision. Teemer may be the quickest wrestler I've seen ths year when he decides to go. Kasak could be #1 when the next rankings are released. This was obviously Kasak’s best win in an undefeated season thus far. He’s also beaten #4 Taylor (NEB) and teammate Facundo. The top three at 157, Kasak, Shapiro and Teemer have separated themselves from the pack, so winning is important to secure the #1 seed at NCAA’s. Long way to go…just giving perspective. Yet to wrestle are #6 Miller (MD), #16 Saldate (MICH) and #19 Sasso (tOSU, gives me goosebumps just seeing Sasso on the mat!!), so he has work to do before Big Ten’s.

165: Mitchell Mesenbrink (one “s”!!!) 14-0, was his usual high energy self, winning by technical fall – against the #2 kid in the country!! I can’t remember this much separation between a #1 wrestler and the field in quite a while. Mesenbrink also has a tech fall win against #9 Wilson (NEB), and has #13 Gallagher (tOSU) and #14 Mantanona yet to wrestle in the regular season. Fellow fans…Don’t take Mesenbrink (or others, for that matter) for granted, ever. The sport he is making look easy is not easy at all.

174: Levi Haines (12-1) came within five seconds of a major decision win against #6 Kennedy, winning by 7 points. No flair, just solid wrestling from Haines. And remember, he is up two weight classes from last season. Other best wins so far are against #14 Pinto (NEB) and #20 Turley (RUT), and he has a loss to #1 O’Toole. No shame at all in the O’Toole loss. The Mizzou wrestler is currently injured. I hope for his return by the postseason. Yet-to-come is #5 Kharchla (tOSU), who beat Kennedy in similar fashion. That should be a great bout, with Haines favored.

184: Carter Starocci (13-0) struggled to score against Ferrari, winning by decision with no takedowns. It is always tough wrestling a guy that backs up and plays defense mostly, but Cael has said that a wrestler needs to find a way when that is the case. Starocci’s best win this season is #7 Allred (NEB), a bout he dominated. Yet to wrestle are #10 Smith (MD), #12 Ruth (ILL) and #18 Rogotzke (tOSU) before the postseason.

197: Josh Barr (12-1) lost by decision to the #1 ranked wrestler in the country. It was a one takedown bout, my opinion being that Buchanan won it in the second period with a sustained ride that sapped Barr’s energy. I know Barr is a high energy guy, but give credit to Buchanan, as being ridden takes more energy than riding. Otherwise, why ride? I believe this result could be reversed in the postseason, as Barr was right there with him. No rest for Barr, as he gets #3 Cardenas (MICH) next weekend and #13 Braunagel to end the conference regular season.

285: Greg Kerkvliet (13-0) won by major decision against #10 Kueter, the Iowa football-player-turned-wrestler. It was a dominant win in a season of dominating wins. Kerkvliet’s highest ranked win though was 2-0 against #8 Slavikouski, though it appears there is more to this story (I’ll stop there). Kerkvliet has a solid four Big Ten bouts ahead, against #11 Heindselmann (MICH), #12 Nevills (MD), #7 Feldman (tOSU) and #9 Luffman (ILL). Win those, which he should, and he’ll surely be on the other side of the bracket at Big Ten’s from Steveson (MINN).

To end, I’d like to shout out to a few of my wrestling friends, and two NEW friends, for the enjoyable afternoon yesterday. It is not just about the wrestling to me, it is also about the many, many folks I’ve had the pleasure of knowing and spending time with over the past 50 years+ of following Penn State wrestling. Yesterday, before the match, our gathering included Mrs. Roar, hlstone, PSUPaul and his wife and son, my brother and two new acquaintances. It was a pleasure meeting johnstownsteel and Mrs. johnstownsteel, been looking forward to this for a very long time. GREAT TIME! Thanks all!
Well I’ll be. I’ve missed you my friend. Philly?

Unlike AJ, I have no problem giving Angelo his due. Thought Carter was “stalking defense” smart against a very fast, very skilled rookie. The kid’s a rock defensively. Not being taken down once was stunning. He’s clearly ready to roll this year, and, without NIL to appease and hold him, he would. I’m convinced no combination of Gabe, Brands, or Kennedy is beating him in the room.
Otherwise, "Ono, what a night!" ;)
Luke scared us, then scared future foes. SVN patiently got to mauling, Tyler overpowered a cobra, MM redefined Hodge, Levi wore down underrated PK, Josh was right there, and calm Kerk rode the linebacker. Sure hope Braeden’s back soon.
So Brands recruited over Gabe 😮

Great night.

A bunch of great matches from our guys obviously. Will touch on a few Iowa things.

Ferrari is going to have a really good career, that kid can wrestle.

What I learned tonight being there was Gabe didn’t duck. You can say a lot of things about the dad, one of the reasons PSU wasn’t interested in Gabe. But he’s not a bad kid. Him talking trash was him trying to get in the lineup, he knew he was sitting.
Agree with that.

But unless he goes in the postseason, what was gained wrestling Ferrari? Meanwhile, Gabe could have gained experience in a big setting against a guy he likely will see at least one more time.

If Ferrari is the guy, then why have we been seeing Gabe at all?

Whole thing just seems shortsighted.
Ferrari is much better than Gabe. They know Gabe isn’t close to Carter.
Up to now I've refrained from commenting about Gabe Arnold, but that last statement makes no sense. A kid tries to force his coach's hand (i.e., reversing a pre-made lineup decision) by making a fuss on social media? Not even TnT are that dumb, or that easily influenced.

And I'll give Arnold credit for not being that naive as well. Arnold may have known he would not wrestle against PSU, but find it really hard to believe he thought that being a douche on social media that change that. I mean, these people can't really be that stupid, right?
It’s Iowa, yes they can be that stupid.

Based on Carters comments, I’m guessing PSU knew Gabe was sitting too.

You can’t throw out the ‘I’m taking his head’ line then get thin skinned about a few heckling fans 😳. This isn’t a badminton match.
Not sure I understand your reply. I mean I completely understand why you said it and agree completely. I said I didn't believe the reason he was removed was because of the "insults". Even though the video is short, I didn't see any fans standing and saying anything to him while he was removed, clapping, or any type of trolling. By the looks of the video, I would go as far as saying a lot of the fans sitting right behind Gabe didn't even know he was being removed.

I'm taking the stance that he was upset and removed because Angelo got the nod and not him. I 100% think Gabe wanted to wrestle Carter.

Right. It wasn’t the score; it was not giving up the TDs that Starocci always finishes. Angelo is the real deal in wrestling. Stay out of trouble Angelo; wrestling fans want to watch your career.

I've seen a ton of comments like this and I simply disagree for the most part. I'm trying not to be petty or too much of a homer, and don't think I am, but feel like Starocci could have and would have finished on at least one or two of those takedowns in different circumstances. Whether Ferarri accounted himself fairly well isn't the issue, the fact is that he backed up, wrestled on a knee and wrestled the edge of the mat entirely for the first three minutes. Starocci had a leg twice in the first period and he would have and could have finished either one of those if Ferarri wasn't camped out outside of the circle. Yeah, he's flexible, but Carter still finishes at least one of those if he has room to work. Then late in the third period Carter has the leg again and it looks to me as if he simply was letting time click away and wasn't really working hard to finish. Then the ref called a stalemate and I believe that Carter could have finished that one too. As others have mentioned, Ferarri kept it close and more power to him for that, but if they wrestle again this year (unlikely I know), I'd wager a whole lot of money on Carter to win again and probably far more comfortably.

My observations are based on what did happen. Your’s are based on what you think hypothetically could have happened had things played out differently. That said, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, of course.

Yes, I shouldn’t have replied to your comment, as my comment wasn’t in response to your post. That's my bad.

What did happen is that Carter Starocci won and it never really looked as if that result was ever in danger. We all know that things often play out differently in a second or third match between two wrestlers than what happened in the first. You're right, we're all entitled to our own opinions, but I don't really see how this is any different than the Brands/Starocci match or a couple of the Hidlay/Brooks matches. Ferarri ran to the outside edge of the mat and he stayed there for at least the entire first period and that makes it extremely difficult to finish a takedown even if your shot is perfect. My point isn't that Ferarri looked bad or did anything "wrong", my point is that his flexibility or solid defense likely wouldn't prevent Carter Starocci from finishing at least one of two of those takedowns in a subsequent match.

On a somewhat related topic, I also think that the two stall calls were absolutely justified and that Ferarri could have been called for fleeing the mat another time in the first period. I suspect the only reason it wasn't called was because he had recently been hit for stalling and the ref didn't want to appear to be trying to influence the outcome too much, but he was absolutely running in the first period at least and that DOES have a bearing on whether an offensive wrestler can score against him. Again, I'm not taking anything away from Ferarri and feel like he did what he was coached to do and did the only thing he could have done to keep it close, but to suggest that he was "right there" with Starocci or that Starocci "couldn't take him down" is less than accurate from my perspective.

I've read thru the thread, and there's alot of doom and gloom over Josh's loss. Wow a RSF losing to the #1 ranked guy is unfathomable to some people here. The laugher is everyone thinking he can't improve the results!

Bo, CStar, Mark H, Aaron B, RBY and quite a few of our stud Freshman lost a match their 1st season. RBY will never beat Austin DeSanto. Anyone remember that?

The coaches will have Josh ready the next time he sees Buchanan, bank on it!
You mean "Book it"
It's the new "bank on it"

Some on GIA are spinning that as being caused by classless PSU fan heckling. Lol. The lack of self-awareness is stunning.
There was an idiot near me saying some stuff until a fan stood up and told him to knock it off. I’m not sure if the ushers threw him out or not, but they were headed in his direction.

I was there and it was an amazing performance by a team that is arguably the greatest team in college wrestling history. The atmosphere at BJC was electric. Almost blew the roof off at two moments, when SVN was getting back points and when Kasak held Teemer aloft while raising his fist in that immediately iconic moment.

As for the matches…
25- LL bounced back nicely and got to legs with ease. I liked that he also put on a nice ride after the thumb injury. I don’t think he’s done a lot of riding this season, so it was nice to see. He will continue to progress and by NCAAs he will be a dramatically better wrestler than in November.
33- Not much to say here. McHenry looked 15 pounds lighter than Ayala. He just got horsed.
41- I think Beau was taken out of his rhythm with all he stoppages. He won comfortably. It’s hard to call when Beau will win by two points or a fall. What can you say?
49- SVN was amazing. He might give up a TD now and then, but his relentless pace and variety of attacks make him the favorite at 149, even after the Lovett result.
57- Astounding performance by Kasak. His technical soundness, defensive skills and incredible strength were all on display. Teemer took some nice shots and Kasak handled it well. The fist raise at the end is instantly seared in the lore of Penn State Wrestling dominance. Lastly, tip of the cap to Teemer who showed a ton of class after the match in his congratulations.
65- Mitchell’s dominance over the number 2 guy is remarkable. MC was wrestling well and some thought he might be competitive. It must be so disheartening for MC to think he had a shot and then to get utterly annihilated. He knows there’s no way he can beat Mitchell and that’s gotta be tough for a top level guy. Mitchell should be a frontrunner for the Hodge.
74- Levi was solid. Kennedy at least put up more of a fight than most of the Iowa wrestlers, but he had nothing for Levi.
84- Ferrari’s talent was evident, but the way he wrestled that match was embarrassing. Constantly backing up and wrestling on the edge. Worse than Hidlay vs Brooks by miles. He should’ve gotten more stall calls than he received. Yes, he is tough to score on, but he was running scared the entire match. He took a few shots, but never really came close to scoring. If the ref made him wrestle in the middle like he should have, Carter gets 2 to 3 takedowns.
97- Honest assessment here…A learning lesson for Barr. I think he might’ve showed Buchanan a little too much respect, as evidenced by his lack of offense in the first two periods. He really never took a committed shot until the third when he was desperate. For all the talk of his gas tank superiority, Barr looked very tired in the third. I think he can improve and narrow the gap, but he’s got some work to do in neutral vs Buchanan.
HW- Kerk was back to his old self again. Whatever flu or illness he had versus Rutgers seems to have cleared up. His power is off the charts. Steveson better not take him lightly.

36 hours after the match there is one report of a witness to one guy mouthing off and who was told by another fan to knock it off. No video of any heckling; nothing on the video of Arnold leaving the floor. Do I think some folks said some things? Of course. But zero evidence of anything that crosses any line. Just a few paid PSU haters making things up as usual.

That's the side effect.

The plan seems pretty obvious: Ferrari is the guy next year, and they're gonna develop him by giving him tough matches this year risk-free.

BTW, don't be surprised if they're both in the Iowa lineup next year. Unless Slumlord Bob finds another willing rental, Iowa has a gaping 4-year hole at 197 when Buchanan leaves in March. Angelo probably doesn't need to be told twice to hit the weights.
The Arnold side effect is he doesn’t wrestle good wrestlers and he doesn’t develop. Get a feel for Carter now, get a feel for good wrestlers now so you are better prepared for March.

It's the Ohio State Piss Balloon farce again.

The reality is that Ferrari wrestled a match that was most favorable for him to win. Exactly the kind of match that a true freshman should wrestle against a four time champ and give him his self a chance to win at the end. And he did not give up a takedown. And yes, he did stall and play the edge. He is certainly flexible and our future 184 will need to find a way to drag him back to the middle of the mat when they get in on a leg. And, Cael and the team will have a plan for him in the future. Because they will need a plan. Maybe the same plan they’ll need when they run into AJ in March.

Yeah, consider me dubious given that this claim is coming from someone who famously knows nothing.

It's the Ohio State Piss Balloon farce again.
i only heard one guy yell stuff. He yelled Gabe’s a pu**y twice. Then he dropped the f word. That was when the guy below him stood up and shut him down. I was sitting in section 105, about 1/2 way down. That was the only bad stuff I heard. People were booing, but that was at Brands. I’m a Penn State fan. The match was awesome.

Regarding any predictions for Ferrari's future based on his match vs Carter, this feels relevant...

Hear, hear! Been thinking the same thing as I have seen the surprising projections of little Ferrari's wrestling future populate this thread over the past couple of days based on one close edge-of-the-mat match against CStar.

Plenty of "elite" opponents have had close scoring matches with Carter over the past few years that never went on to sniff a national title.
