Illinois dual thread - Feb 16

Always comical on these threads hearing older men critique D1 wrestlers, even more so when the target is a freshman. Joe Sealey may never beat out Tyler, or MM, or PJ for a starting spot at PSU, but I’m glad he believes he can, despite all our precious, informed doubts and instructions on how he needs to improve. ;)
Agree, and certainly sounds like he showed improvement from Friday to today.

You would think there would be some sort of review process so the refs could receive feedback. However, typically what happens is refs will slap each other on the back and tell them great call.

The best ref I've seen in years was the guy on Friday night. He was so damn good that nobody knows his name.
Reynaldo Santiago of Port Lucie, FL. Tim Johnson said his name.

Anyone go to this match? Just wondering what the reaction was from our side when the call was overturned. It looked like Imar was shocked

The Big Ten needs to review that and take disciplinary action against Rivera. He’s got to be held accountable for his incompetence.
LOL, will never happen.

It was a brutal call to wave off the Sealey TD, but really all we can do is laugh it off. Fortunately, had no impact on the dual, though it did cost Sealey his first college win.

Casey to Cael, "We just got Rivera'd."

Cael: "I guess Angel is still making us pay for Vinny Kilkeary's non-TD against Davis in the Ohio State dual last season."

If we can’t pay to attend or watch them wrestle, perhaps donate towards what they do, and offer the occasional opinion about what we see, then what are we even doing here?
Fair enough, I’ll just never care for criticizing young men, especially freshmen, doing their best in a combat sport. That’s just me.

You literally wrote what everyone else wrote (“Sealey may never beat out Tyler, or MM, or PJ for a starting spot at PSU“) while disparaging everyone else for writing it. So save the holier than thou stuff (“that’s just me”).

Hmm . . I see now what you mean, though "may" implies that I feel he has a chance to do just that . . . even without my guidance. Bottom line, you and RB are right. This is a message board. Criticizing athletes is a hallmark of it. I just didn't much care for the Sealey jabs, not against a pretty solid Buckeye opponent. Now excuse me while I go out to shovel a bit of unexpected snow the weather folks underestimated.

I surprised that Davis hasn’t progressed in year 2 , yeah he’s been hurt , and maybe that’s it I don’t know
He needs to really turn it around to get good placement at Bigs, and try to AA

I wonder if Cael banned all scooter rides going forward
What was the score against Crookham? He's been dinged up in some way or another most of the season... just saying...

And ripped on Kueter for not progressing…uh, he’s a RS freshman. Something about glass houses comes to mind.

Like my post that said “Not saying he won’t get there, but there is a hill to climb.”?

Like billrag who wrote “. I hope he turns things around and becomes a real option at some point. Sometime it takes some time and we know that he has been dealing with some things.”?

Like BobAnderson who wrote “Now his first couple matches are in the books and I would anticipate better efforts moving forward.”?

Etc.

That’s just us.

1 definitely was not. They did a pretty good job.
Although one of them said both teams were wearing navy blue singlets and you could tell who was who by the color of their anklet. Followed up immediately by saying Illinois was wearing the red anklet “at least for this bout”.

How many dual matches did DT start during his TRUE freshman year?
I mean, you know he didn’t wrestle in any duals that year since doing so at the time would have burned his redshirt.

But here’s what the team site says:

“2009-10:
Red-shirt season...posted 21-2 record as an unattached competitor...wrestled in five open tournaments, winning three and taking second in the other two...won W&J Open on 1/14...second at ESU Open on 11/22...won Mat-Town on 11/28...second at NLO on 12/6 (losing to Lion All-American Cyler Sanderson 9-7 in finals)...won National Collegiate Open on 2/20...competed all season at 157...7-0 in pins, 10-0 in technical falls and 2-0 in majors.”

That other loss, at the ESU open, was 4-3 to Bubba Jenkins.

To continue about mcpat thoughts. We can post comments and opinion. My opinion about Sealy was based on a very knowledgeable Seminary fan who was concerned about Sealy moving up against college competition and the strength needed to be successful. The kid was great at Wyoming. I think he won 3 Nationals. His (no)takedown was/is what probably made him dominate at Wyoming. Hopefully he figures out bottom.
Commenting about a shortcoming of a wrestler shouldn't be treated as something wrong. What do you think the coaching staff talks to the kid about . These are young men, not teenagers.
Honesty is part of life.

The whizzer has to be in place before they hit the deck... Sealy was in a clear "control position" when they hit the deck with at least 3 points of contact - that's a takedown. You can't "create" a whizzer in arrears.... it has to be there BEFORE they hit the mat with one wrestler in a control position.
In addition, even you wanted to call that a “whizzer” (lol .. an inverted or upside down whizzer) Sealy clearly covered both legs at the end … with his opponent’s butt on the mat and Sealy covering his hips… only in Angel’s world is that not control and a TD.

Could you imagine that call being made and cost a kid advancement in NCAA tournament or a team going for a record win streak.
Absolutely terrible. The Big Ten should let Elon Musk determine Angel fate.😏
The difference is at the national tournament it's an independent review and there is no way that call gets overturned.

That's kind of my point... DT lost to a teammate who finished 6th at 2010 NCAA while gettting pinned and majored in consolations. For the same reason you make - that wrestling a varsity match would have burned DT's shirt - I suspect that "the field" at ESU, W&J and Mat Town didn't include many starters from other D1 teams. I doubt anyone had expectations that Sealy was going to be the second coming of DT..... Different circumstances (redshirt rules) shouldn't cloud our perspective of true freshman "spot starters" on the current team. Different opinions don't make either of us wrong.
