Illinois dual thread - Feb 16

Braunagel isn't that easy to score on and is pretty good at keeping matches close. It was a workmanlike performance by Haines; no fireworks but did what he needed to do and controlled the bout.

And in case you haven't noticed, Kharchla is pretty damn good. No one is likely to score a ton against him. That was actually a very good win for Haines, particularly after giving up the initial TD.
rally hard to score points when the other guy wont wrestle!

We all have watched the same TD over and over again. The kid's butt is on the mat with Joe's right arm rapped across his lower back. By some miracle you allow for response time, the wrestler's left arm is laying on Sealey's right arm and not initially engaged. The whizzer comes way late in the action. BS call

Regardless, Sealey didn’t exactly make me think Friday was a bad weight cut issue. The young man has work to do if he wants to be a starter on this team. Not saying he won’t get there, but there is a hill to climb.
At this rate, he’s not beating PJ Duke if they’re at same weight.

184 - #1 Carter Starocci VS #12 Edmond Ruth

Period 1:
I hope we get angry Carter today. It's time for some pain. Circling & tying up. Starocci presses forward & takes Ruth out of bounds. Stall call on Ruth. Circling, hand fighting & tying up. Starocci drops to a leg & easily picks up the TD, 3-0, 2-min left. Starocci throws in a boot & gets Ruth bellied out. Starocci has an arm barred & Ruth all twisted up. Ruth gets back to his base & Starocci lets him go, 3-1. Ruth shoots, Starocci counters & drops to a leg, but Ruth kicks free. Starocci has Ruth on the edge & takes him out of bounds. Stall #2 on Ruth, point Starocci, 4-1. Starocci reaches for a leg, but no luck. Starocci presses forward, drops to a leg & gets another TD, 7-1. Starocci quickly gets Ruth bellied out & rides out the period. 7-1 Starocci, +58-sec RT

Period 2:
Ruth takes down, but I don't know why. Starocci immediately gets him bellied out. Starocci gets a boot in & is turking Ruth hard. The ref is yelling for action. Stall #3 on Ruth, point Starocci, 8-1. Ruth is bellied out & not going anywhere. Starocci gets a chicken wing & it's stopped for PD, restart. Starocci goes optional start & gives up the escape, 8-2. Starocci presses forward & has Ruth on the edge again. Starocci shoots, but Ruth circles back in. He doesn't want to lose by stalling. Starocci presses forward, drops to a leg & gets another TD on the edge, 11-2. Ruth gets to his feet, turns & gets the escape right before the buzzer, 11-3

Period 3:
Starocci takes down, gets to his feet & gets the escape, 12-3. Starocci presses forward again. He drops to a leg, elevates it & trips Ruth to the mat, 15-3. Starocci cuts Ruth, 15-4. Starocci presses forward again, 1:13 left. Starocci drives Ruth out of bounds, restart. Stalling #4 on Ruth, 2 points Starocci, 17-4. Starocci shoots, but no luck. Starocci pushes forward & has Ruth on the edge again. Ruth is trying to circle around the mat. Starocci is handing Ruth a big brother beatdown. Starocci shoots, but Ruth fights out of it. Starocci shoots & Ruth gets stall call #5. That's a DQ, and I don't mean Dairy Queen! Wow!!! Starocci broke Ruth. Ruth is disqualified for stalling.

Gulibon got the ultimate Angel. Pinned Heil 3 or 4 times, Angel didn’t call it. Think that match was impetuous behind neutral near fall rule.
I'm not sure there's any other parallel in sports for a significant rule change to be caused in large measure because a single referee is an idiot

i know there is 1 dual left, but to me it appears LL, BB, SVN, MM, LH, CS, JB and Kirk are all ready to go and (sickness aside) relatively healthy and are peaking. A little concerned about Levi’s attack rate hasn’t been the same for a few weeks now - not counting Michigan match. But he’s Levi, so…
Need Braden and Tyler to heal up.
Nice to see Joe look a bit more like himself today. I dont know if he ever makes the lineup but he took a step forward today and deserved the win against a seasoned pro.

To me, trying to factor in seeds at this point, the likelihood of making the NCAA finals, in order are: MM, CStar, Kirk, Levi, Kasak, SVN, JB, BB, LL, BD. I think the over/under on finalists is 5.5 and I’d take the over.

Like my post that said “Not saying he won’t get there, but there is a hill to climb.”?

Like billrag who wrote “. I hope he turns things around and becomes a real option at some point. Sometime it takes some time and we know that he has been dealing with some things.”?

Like BobAnderson who wrote “Now his first couple matches are in the books and I would anticipate better efforts moving forward.”?

Etc.

That’s just us.
Oh, I like these. Must’ve cherrypicked a few that got under my skin and set me off. One thing’s certain. I’m sure to irritate and disagree again. Like others have said, that’s why we’re here.

And getting to his legs often. Not succeeding necessarily but getting in deep.
I think Levi needs to get away from his high crotch a little bit and work in a outside single or a underhook throw by to a single. They know he wants a high crotch, so show them something different, then again maybe he's waiting to show it in the postseason. 🤷‍♂️

the refs are either blind or wearing really card sunglasses what's so sad is that one won't change the call over the guy on the mat

Never been a fan of Angel Rivera. Also not much of a fan of Nick Grosso (secondary official at Illinois-PSU dual), especially this year. He didn't do such a hot job when he officiated one (a couple?) of our earlier duals this season. Grosso was the official for our Rutgers dual meet.

Why? He's a true freshman wrestling a 6th year senior after losing his initial dual pretty convincingly. I'm not watching, only listening, but it sounds like he wrestled a pretty decent match.
He's clueless. Just like when folks say stupid sh&t like refs can't affect the outcome of matches. Fact is, no matter how hard one tries, in close battles, scum like Angel can and will change outcomes. Joe didn't have to do better because he actually won the match. F Angel.

Some have said this here as well. Angel will say he didn't control him " beyond reaction time". I thought he did and it should've been 3. Reaction time in the rule book isn't defined it's up to each official to determine themselves it's a total judgement call. I hate it but not sure how you can actually define reaction time any other way. Hard to say 1 second or 2 seconds and have that be timed during the action.

If the kids had been clear at the end then I would still be a bit peeved at the call, but OK.
He wasn't fress. He was wrestling to break control at that end.

I've said this before and I'll say it again-Grosso is the only official I've seen call a double stall in a looooong time (twice this year) which I think the sport would be well served to see called more often.

Given that they were partially OB when they landed on the edge of the mat, I'm not even sure reaction time applies in that situation. In a situation where one or both wrestlers are partially OB, I believe there is no reaction time and a TD is instantaneous if one wrestler is in a control position and there is at least 3-points of contact from the other wrestler (both criteria were satisfied when they hit the mat at the edge partially OB - there was no whizzer when they hit the mat).

0-0 at the end of the first, should be an automatic double stall.
Wasn't there a time in college wrestling when if no points were scored in the 1st period, the ref would have to award a stall call to one of the wrestlers? I can't recall if the ref could award a double stall call or not.

I've seen matches where both guys are very active and it's high-level wrestling but are so evenly matched it ends up at 0-0. You still want automatic stall?
Yep. Make a rule for the usual circumstances. The 1 out of 50 exception is a silly reason to not implement a rule that otherwise seems to make sense.

Yep. 80s i believe. College and HS.
