Maryland dual thread - Sunday, 2/9

I guess I’m out of the loop. Was is truly a concussion worry or did the cut open up again? Secondly, does he have a history of concussions?
Yes and no (not before this weekend) He didn't have concussion symptoms against Teemer I don't think.

First of all JB mentioned concussion protocol. Plus they left the mat, I don’t think they are allowed to do that just for blood time. But someone more up on the rules might know better.
I also do not remember hearing about any other concussions.

They weren't running the clock and they left the mat, so concussion. Something happened because it wasn't long after leaving the mat and heading back to locker room they decided to default.

As far as I know Tyler has not had concussion issues.

If it had simply been a reopening, staple it, glue it wrap the snot out of it.

Pretty sure the ref gave the concussion protocol signal (fist to head) during both the Michigan and Maryland matches. I didn’t see it vs Teemer, but all 3 stoppages (Iowa included) also didn’t give the opponent the choice of position on the restart that injury time would have dictated.

FWIW, my initial reaction to his stoppages over the last 3 matches was these were head injuries, concussion, whatever you want to call it. In real time, I thought his reaction to each head shot was consistent with what you would expect from that type of injury, even in the case of the initial laceration.

If I was forced to bet on this, my money would say undiagnosed head injury during the Teemer match. Aggravated against UM and pushed completely over the edge against MD.

Hard to believe with the conservative policy these days.

The science/diagnosis isn't perfect. It's not impossible that he had a grade 0/1 concussion and passed all the rudimentary tests administered matside during the first two matches. This isn't a pregnant/not pregnant situation.

I would assume he got hit on the stiches and ripped them open, hurt like hell, and probably saw some stars. The idea of the cut needing to heal so it doesn't keep breaking open is a top priority... I did say assume
He took a shot to the temple area and is in concussion protocol

Do they get restart choice on blood time? I thought they didn’t and that was the stoppage reasons for Iowa and Michigan.
But I didn’t even know the fist to head hand motion for concussion. Sounds like the dreaded fist to back!

Iowa could have been blood time, but I’m fairly sure it was concussion time vs Michigan.

Maybe Tyler can borrow Carter’s mask.

Say what you want. Tyler got clobbered in the head 3 matches in a row. I don't like negative trends. I hope he doesn't go this weekend.

I'm with you. We're not sure what happened and I'm glad the staff is tight-lipped, respecting the athlete's PHI and competitive position.

Based on Cael's long established actions: Priority List:

1.) Wrestler's health.
2.) NCAAs
3.) Big10 Conf Championships
4.) Dual Meet where the outcome is as close to a lock as we get in this world, only the margin is uncertain.

I'll bet one of the 149's wrestles up.

You saw correctly. However, the Teemer stoppage was blood time so no choice of position.

I also think three straight match dropping whacks to the head might have a coach deciding to put a wrestler in concussion protocol even if there wasn’t one immediately indicated. Particularly if you really do recognize the goal is to win in March, not today. Default out and move on. Not saying that’s happening here, but would have crossed my mind on the spot with one of my wrestlers in the same situation.

I’m just a fan drinking beer on my couch, but I was hoping even before last Friday that Kasak would be sitting the weekend out to help allow the cut to heal up a bit so that it wouldn’t be a chronic distraction the rest of the way. Doctors and coaches know better than I, however, whether that was a realistic strategy.

What had me most concerned during the concussion protocol timeout vs. Michigan was that it appeared Cael — kneeling on the mat just a foot or two from Kasak — was trying to talk to him, and Tyler seemed totally distracted and looking up and away (for score/clock, video replay, or something in the stands?). It seemed like Cael was trying (unsuccessfully) to get and keep his attention. Maybe nothing, but had me wondering if Tyler was ok.

I initially took his post-Iowa presser comment about having “blacked out” during the conclusion of the Teemer match simply as a way to avoid answering one of those tired “what were you feeling?” questions. But if/when he subsequently goes into CP in back-to-back matches, it is difficult not to wonder whether something more serious than severe pain is at play.

From a guy drinking beer on his couch. Just hate to see head injuries.

The blackout comment was him describing what he was thinking as he held Teemer in the air and raised a triumphant right fist to the crowd.

I think we are in agreement on that? Maybe I didn’t describe it well.

I initially took the answer as a deflection, or a downplaying of what he did. Or maybe he meant it in the context of just not really thinking anything. I really hope that’s the case.
