Maryland dual thread - Sunday, 2/9

The kid who is ostensibly the color commentator has been solid enough. The lead guy is…not great.
I don't know if I agree. I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt but just wanted them to shut-up as they talk as if they have to. Of course I was listening to Ironhead. The problem is that it appears no one is giving these kids feedback so they can learn.

You’d think part of the curriculum would be listen to Byers and watch the match..

The official gopsusports summary of the match clearly explains what happened with the Kasak injury:

“Sophomore Tyler Kasak, ranked No. 1 at 157, was leading No. 6 Ethen Miller late in the second period when he took a third hand to the and entered concussion protocol. He was unable to continue, and Miller won by injury default at 4:21.“

I was kind of expecting him nor to go today after the head bang against Michigan
Just back from the match. Ain’t read Jack yet! Just wanna say that the brand of wrestling that the turtles trotted out there today was garbage. Eyes, heads, edge wrestling, lying about, …. just bad. Man up and take your whippin. If you don’t want to compete, we’ll just drop the sport and adopt a sport like bowling. Aaaah….

Yep. And you’re not just making this up.

The people in here underestimating how hard it is to be a commentator is amusing. I've seen people who are incredibly knowledgeable in their field and very articulate in interviews melt when casting live action. I've seen others cast for years and never quite figure it out despite spending 100s of hours in front of a mic/camera. The way you prepare and incorporate said preparation is a learned skill in and of itself. The back and forth between color commentator and analyst is something that takes a lot of time to build as well.

The fact that people in here give Gibbons shit despite him being extremely accomplished shows that you should probably cut these kids a break. I think more people should use my style of announcing (shit talking the participants is much easier than taking all that prep you did and turning it into concise statements (and employing said statements at the right time as well!)) but, since that's not a viable option, I give the kids credit for doing as well as they do (especially considering they probably are way more knowledgably about mainstream sports than our niche activity).

Tldr: we should talk MORE shit about gibbons and Burroughs since they are being held to a way higher standard and didn't attend Penn State.

No one is going to complain about a student broadcaster stumbling over words or making small mistakes or having bad chemistry with their partner. But they should be expected to know standard terminology of the sport they’re commentating on.

How many hours do you think it would take for you to learn the rules of a sport you don't know to the point that you can intelligently talk about it using said sport's jargon? For example, I can cast StarCraft II and have in the past. I wager it takes you a hundred plus hours to even be able to make real sense of what is going on on screen. And, when I say i wager I actually would. Just name an amount and we're good to go.

The Kasak thing is a great example of how silly your statement is. Do you really expect them to learn the exact concussion protocol just to commentate this match when the likelihood of a concussion occurring is so low?

No. But come on. There’s a certain minimum standard. I don’t expect them to know what a spladle is or a jonesy or even a cradle. I do expect them to know what a takedown, escape and nearfall are.

That certainly would be nice! Sadly we rarely seen any of these college age kids actually manage to do so. Honestly, it's not shocking given the work ethic of the average college student who is being forced to commentate a match for which they are likely not being graded on Super Bowl Sunday.

I listened to Byers so I didn’t hear the students. But I’m guessing it would be like me having to announce a Cricket match. I’d be like: Here’s the pitch and the batter hits it and is running back and forth while carrying his paddle. And somehow there is either 0 or 9 points and he may be out or is hitting again

that is why I said it appears no one is following up with them so they can learn. Saying the same stuff today as before. They should want to get better

From Cael is saying it sounds like a concussion. Kasak took a knee hard enough to his head, 9 days ago against Iowa to split his eyebrow open. Against Michigan on Friday and Maryland today, he took several jabs to the head. The last one from Miller most likely put him over the edge with the cumulative blows to the head over the last 9 days. Just my prediction, we don't see Kasak until B1Gs.

And have a riding time clock, by the way if you want a good laugh and have big10 plus listen maryland broadcast from Friday. I swear they were calling take down with a wrestler in control and gaining riding time.

Can we expect them to know how to pronounce last names of the 20 wrestlers they’ll see? It wasn’t like one syllable off. Poor Lemus was presented as though he was from Bordeaux.

I thought today they did better than many other student announcers I’ve heard.
