Iowa dual thread - Jan 31

Just pathetic. If this is the Brands setting him up to look like a complete fool yet again and he really has no say in the matter, he’ll be a great addition at Rutgers next year.
Doubt he is transferring but I would love that… saw a video clip that he was not happy that Ferrarri got the start to wrestle CStar.. he couldn’t watch the match…

Best part about the stage is the raised mat means you see the Brands less.
I noticed one time when cameras scanned over to Tom he was cheering wildly when one of his guys managed an escape. Guess you have to find something to cheer about.

Last evening’s dual meet against Iowa provided me the most fun I’ve had at a dual since the 19-18 win against Ohio State on February 3, 2018. I will always consider Iowa a worthy opponent, and the environment and wrestling lived up to its billing, as the crowd of 15,998 (ties indoor attendance record) was loud and proud and the wrestling fabulous. I’ve tried to capture a few thoughts about the bouts last evening, a brief summary of the season so for the nine starters that wrestled, and what’s ahead. After that I’ll end on a few comments that made the day extra special for me.

125: Luke Lilledahl (12-1) broke out the offense in a big way, dominant in a technical fall victory against #23 Cruz. It was his most impressive offensive explosion on the season, as his other five tech falls were against lesser competition. His best win on the season is against #6 Smith (NEB), as Lilledahl won’t have a great resume by season’s end. Yet to come is #16 McCrone (tOSU), as the highest ranked opponent yet to wrestle in the regular season. Can only wrestle the guy they put in front of you, so thus far the season is a success, the schedule just didn’t provide Lilledahl with many top guys. The postseason shall be interesting, as the competition will get tougher for Lilledahl. Still he likes the limelight and isn’t fazed by pressure. The Peterson loss is in the rearview mirror.

141: Beau Bartlett (13-0) won in workmanlike fashion. Nothing fancy, just a solid never-in-trouble four point win. Has season wins against #4 Hardy (NEB), #12 Edmonds (MIZZ) and #15 Olivieri (RUT), so a decent resume so far. Upcoming bouts against #11 Lemley (MICH), #1 Mendez (tOSU) and #16 Pucino (ILL), so he has his work cut out. The Mendez bout will be good fun, and they may face each other three times this season.

149: Shayne Van Ness (12-1) put on a show against #4 Parco (#2 on Intermat). A close 4-4 bout in the first period ended as a major decision for Van Ness as the crowd was going bananas. Solid, solid, dominating win against a very talented opponent. Van Ness has already put the #2 Lovett (NEB) loss behind him. This win, against Parco was by far his best win of the season. He has #9 D’Emilio (tOSU) and #15 Webster (ILL) ahead, among others before the postseason.

157: Tyler Kasak (13-0) also put on a show, defeating #1 Teemer by decision. Teemer may be the quickest wrestler I've seen ths year when he decides to go. Kasak could be #1 when the next rankings are released. This was obviously Kasak’s best win in an undefeated season thus far. He’s also beaten #4 Taylor (NEB) and teammate Facundo. The top three at 157, Kasak, Shapiro and Teemer have separated themselves from the pack, so winning is important to secure the #1 seed at NCAA’s. Long way to go…just giving perspective. Yet to wrestle are #6 Miller (MD), #16 Saldate (MICH) and #19 Sasso (tOSU, gives me goosebumps just seeing Sasso on the mat!!), so he has work to do before Big Ten’s.

165: Mitchell Mesenbrink (one “s”!!!) 14-0, was his usual high energy self, winning by technical fall – against the #2 kid in the country!! I can’t remember this much separation between a #1 wrestler and the field in quite a while. Mesenbrink also has a tech fall win against #9 Wilson (NEB), and has #13 Gallagher (tOSU) and #14 Mantanona yet to wrestle in the regular season. Fellow fans…Don’t take Mesenbrink (or others, for that matter) for granted, ever. The sport he is making look easy is not easy at all.

174: Levi Haines (12-1) came within five seconds of a major decision win against #6 Kennedy, winning by 7 points. No flair, just solid wrestling from Haines. And remember, he is up two weight classes from last season. Other best wins so far are against #14 Pinto (NEB) and #20 Turley (RUT), and he has a loss to #1 O’Toole. No shame at all in the O’Toole loss. The Mizzou wrestler is currently injured. I hope for his return by the postseason. Yet-to-come is #5 Kharchla (tOSU), who beat Kennedy in similar fashion. That should be a great bout, with Haines favored.

184: Carter Starocci (13-0) struggled to score against Ferrari, winning by decision with no takedowns. It is always tough wrestling a guy that backs up and plays defense mostly, but Cael has said that a wrestler needs to find a way when that is the case. Starocci’s best win this season is #7 Allred (NEB), a bout he dominated. Yet to wrestle are #10 Smith (MD), #12 Ruth (ILL) and #18 Rogotzke (tOSU) before the postseason.

197: Josh Barr (12-1) lost by decision to the #1 ranked wrestler in the country. It was a one takedown bout, my opinion being that Buchanan won it in the second period with a sustained ride that sapped Barr’s energy. I know Barr is a high energy guy, but give credit to Buchanan, as being ridden takes more energy than riding. Otherwise, why ride? I believe this result could be reversed in the postseason, as Barr was right there with him. No rest for Barr, as he gets #3 Cardenas (MICH) next weekend and #13 Braunagel to end the conference regular season.

285: Greg Kerkvliet (13-0) won by major decision against #10 Kueter, the Iowa football-player-turned-wrestler. It was a dominant win in a season of dominating wins. Kerkvliet’s highest ranked win though was 2-0 against #8 Slavikouski, though it appears there is more to this story (I’ll stop there). Kerkvliet has a solid four Big Ten bouts ahead, against #11 Heindselmann (MICH), #12 Nevills (MD), #7 Feldman (tOSU) and #9 Luffman (ILL). Win those, which he should, and he’ll surely be on the other side of the bracket at Big Ten’s from Steveson (MINN).

To end, I’d like to shout out to a few of my wrestling friends, and two NEW friends, for the enjoyable afternoon yesterday. It is not just about the wrestling to me, it is also about the many, many folks I’ve had the pleasure of knowing and spending time with over the past 50 years+ of following Penn State wrestling. Yesterday, before the match, our gathering included Mrs. Roar, hlstone, PSUPaul and his wife and son, my brother and two new acquaintances. It was a pleasure meeting johnstownsteel and Mrs. johnstownsteel, been looking forward to this for a very long time. GREAT TIME! Thanks all!

I feel like I watched a different match at 97... Not trying to be overly negative, but I really didn't see Josh as being "right there" with Buchanan. Josh's neutral offense was nonexistent against Buchanan - he never even got Buchanan remotely out of his "comfort zone" in Neutral, while Josh looked uncomfortable, and had to fight off several of Buchanan's attacks, the entire match. Also, let's not forget that all Josh had to do was ride Buchanan for like 7 seconds to take out the RT ADV.... - he couldn't do it, he allowed Buchanan to escape in like 3 seconds! That changed the entire complexion of the match (up to that point, Buchanan had dominated the match, but had not yet won it.... the 3rd Period started with each knowing what needed to be done.... and Buchanan showed precisely how in control of that match he was in the first 3 seconds of the third. Dead cinch lead-pipe lock to win after he escaped essentially right off the whistle.... match was over.).

Nice to see Allen from Boalsburg is alive and assuming doing well.

I'm not sure I believe that, but I'm not saying its not true. I'm sure the fans sitting behind Gabe heard/read what he said about taking Carter's head. Of course there is going to things said when you don't take the mat, regardless on who made that call.

I know it's a short video clip, but judging ONLY from what was seen, I don't believe anything overly egregious was being said. I didn't see anyone leaning over the rails, or even standing up pointing down at Gabe. I didn't see Gabe or Tom/Terry (not sure which one walked him out) saying anything to the crowd. I've seen enough of Tom and Terry to know that they will 100% engage with the crowd to defend his guys. Hell, I've seen him (Terry) argue with fans when it had nothing to do with his guys, he just didn't agree with what was being said.
You can’t throw out the ‘I’m taking his head’ line then get thin skinned about a few heckling fans 😳. This isn’t a badminton match.

[Edit: I had not read the earlier posts on this topic before I responded.] The poor start to that match is what cost MM. Only three seconds into the match he sloppily marched right into a blast double from Carr. Bigger than that, though, was Carr then rode him for 1:42, thus shortening the time MM had available to get to his offense. MM seemed a little too hyped and didn't wrestle to his ability. The mental error of not knowing he was trailing in the third was the final nail in the coffin. Had he known the score, he had a full minute to push the pace and either get a stall call or TD. Had MM wrestled to his ability, both physically and mentally I think he would have won. All that being said, the bottom line is Carr deserved that win.
In regards to Mitch in finals last year.
Sometimes a ,"moment" can be difficult on processing what normally is easy .
I remember once having a car pass me on a bad turn when school bus was coming the opposite direction. The car swerved into my front bumper. The driver proceeded to flee the scene. Cops came and I couldn't even remember what color car he was driving. I actually was embarrassed but the adrenaline and "moment" overwhelmed me. I'm certain it can happen in sports.
Note: they caught the driver.

Ludington is coming in next year. Iowa will probably need a 1 year filler to give him a rs, but I think he's the future 197 for the Hawks.
Good catch. I forgot about him and WrestleStat doesn't have him in the Eligibility tab.

I've read thru the thread, and there's alot of doom and gloom over Josh's loss. Wow a RSF losing to the #1 ranked guy is unfathomable to some people here. The laugher is everyone thinking he can't improve the results!

Bo, CStar, Mark H, Aaron B, RBY and quite a few of our stud Freshman lost a match their 1st season. RBY will never beat Austin DeSanto. Anyone remember that?

The coaches will have Josh ready the next time he sees Buchanan, bank on it!

Agree….also, don’t sleep on Cardenas either. He looks great.

7 of the Top 12 at 197 are seniors. Barr will be just fine at 197. he's been nothing short of a revelation this season. why mess w/ that?
I never said I would move him back to 184. I have no idea what his walking around weight it is. I just said that I think 184 is his best weight long term. Which I do. I still think he will have an awesome career whether it’s 197 or 184. I think he can be really really good at 197, but I think he would be incredible at 184. I think it’s a moot point though because I can’t remember the last time Cael moved somebody down a weight that was this successful.

I think the boos were more directed at Brands' decision much more than either Ferrari or Arnold. And I think we can all agree that this was clearly on Brands, not his wrestlers.
Agree but being a kid and hearing the boos he could have easily went off the rails.

I've made some posts about the match, but I never said Josh can't improve and have learned things from the match. The comments I made were regarding the match Friday night - specifically, many saying that Josh was "right there" on Friday, almost had it and will likely win next time.... That isn't the match I saw - just being honest. The gap is pretty wide right now imho, but that doesn't mean that Josh can't, or won't, close the gap next time they see each other. Josh and the staff need to really analyze why Josh's offense was so neutralized by Buchanan. Based on what we saw - beating Buchanan in Neutral is likely Josh's best path to victory, because Buchanan appeared to have a significant advantage on the mat (both top and bottom).

That was excellent. On BTN I didn't see Tyler's affirmative head nods when he was holding Teemer in the air as if to say, "That's right!, that's right!" I also loved the angle showing Tyler holding his arm up and the crowd going absolutely nuts in the background. That is a moment no one can ever take from him.

Just occurred to me that we beat Iowa by one more point last year than this year. And last year was at Iowa. So they are closing the gap. :)

Josh mentioned he has to cut a few pounds to make 197. I had mentioned this in a previous post on this topic: Staying at 197 will allow Barr to continue to add good weight (he has mentioned he cuts a few pounds to make 197) while still being able to cut down to 86 kg for freestyle events. I believe wrestling 184 is less optimal for his freestyle pursuits as a cut down to 86kg from 197 seems like a better strategy than wrestling as a small (relatively) 86kg'er who comes up from 184 lbs. Cutting to 86 kg while wrestling 197 was successful for Bo and Aaron. Even Taylor was cutting a lot of weight at the end to make 86 kg.

Angelo showed the skills and athleticism to definitely be a multi time champ last night. Everyone should come away impressed overall.

That being said, extrapolating a close loss to Carter (when plenty of wrestlers have done that over the years like Foca, Broderson, Nelson, Welsh) to some guaranteed 4 time status is hilarious. Let's be honest, Ferrari has probably spent a while preparing solely for this match and had absolutely nothing to lose.

He also isn't one of those true freshman that is behind on weight and strength, he's a Ferrari. Carter isn't a big 184 either.

Right. It wasn’t the score; it was not giving up the TDs that Starocci always finishes. Angelo is the real deal in wrestling. Stay out of trouble Angelo; wrestling fans want to watch your career.
