Iowa dual thread - Jan 31

@jtothemfp and my extensive dual recap and takery, along with more of @tikk10 's incredibly photos are up now:

Can anyone help me remember that dog and pony show Brands had a few years back where a rumored injured hawk intervened at match time to be allowed to wrestle? Would love to add a link to that clip if anyone can find it.

Nice job nerf.

Not sure if you want this kind of feedback, but I saw a couple apparent typos: (1) you give the attendance as 14,998 but I've seen it elsewhere as 15,998; (2) you note that Iowa had 1 more takedown vs PSU than Nebraska had with 8 but your table show Nebraska with 4 total.

Nice catches! Thanks. We strive for perfection. Motivation aplenty, lol.

I was there and it was an amazing performance by a team that is arguably the greatest team in college wrestling history. The atmosphere at BJC was electric. Almost blew the roof off at two moments, when SVN was getting back points and when Kasak held Teemer aloft while raising his fist in that immediately iconic moment.

As for the matches…
25- LL bounced back nicely and got to legs with ease. I liked that he also put on a nice ride after the thumb injury. I don’t think he’s done a lot of riding this season, so it was nice to see. He will continue to progress and by NCAAs he will be a dramatically better wrestler than in November.
33- Not much to say here. McHenry looked 15 pounds lighter than Ayala. He just got horsed.
41- I think Beau was taken out of his rhythm with all he stoppages. He won comfortably. It’s hard to call when Beau will win by two points or a fall. What can you say?
49- SVN was amazing. He might give up a TD now and then, but his relentless pace and variety of attacks make him the favorite at 149, even after the Lovett result.
57- Astounding performance by Kasak. His technical soundness, defensive skills and incredible strength were all on display. Teemer took some nice shots and Kasak handled it well. The fist raise at the end is instantly seared in the lore of Penn State Wrestling dominance. Lastly, tip of the cap to Teemer who showed a ton of class after the match in his congratulations.
65- Mitchell’s dominance over the number 2 guy is remarkable. MC was wrestling well and some thought he might be competitive. It must be so disheartening for MC to think he had a shot and then to get utterly annihilated. He knows there’s no way he can beat Mitchell and that’s gotta be tough for a top level guy. Mitchell should be a frontrunner for the Hodge.
74- Levi was solid. Kennedy at least put up more of a fight than most of the Iowa wrestlers, but he had nothing for Levi.
84- Ferrari’s talent was evident, but the way he wrestled that match was embarrassing. Constantly backing up and wrestling on the edge. Worse than Hidlay vs Brooks by miles. He should’ve gotten more stall calls than he received. Yes, he is tough to score on, but he was running scared the entire match. He took a few shots, but never really came close to scoring. If the ref made him wrestle in the middle like he should have, Carter gets 2 to 3 takedowns.
97- Honest assessment here…A learning lesson for Barr. I think he might’ve showed Buchanan a little too much respect, as evidenced by his lack of offense in the first two periods. He really never took a committed shot until the third when he was desperate. For all the talk of his gas tank superiority, Barr looked very tired in the third. I think he can improve and narrow the gap, but he’s got some work to do in neutral vs Buchanan.
HW- Kerk was back to his old self again. Whatever flu or illness he had versus Rutgers seems to have cleared up. His power is off the charts. Steveson better not take him lightly.

Good summary - agree with your observations up-&-down the lineup.

Agree regarding Josh's best path to victory - if he's going to beat Buchanan, he's likely going to have to do it in Neutral, so he (and the staff) have some work to do in terms of figuring out some strategies and tactics that are going to give Josh the angles he needs to get his offense off (part of the problem was that Josh was always way too square to Buchanan.... and always looking tentative and leery of an attack from Buchanan as you said.). I think some of it may have been caused by Buchanan's attack at the very start of the match - Buchanan was extremely deep and very nearly finished clean - a herculean defensive effort by Josh turned it into a very long scramble where Josh was in the inferior position for most of the time. I think that series not only shook Josh as to getting to offensive against Buchanan, butJosh also used a ton of energy fighting off that attack (and he was fortunate to eventually get the stalemate).

Anyway, Josh looks like he is going to lose a point, or possibly even 2, on the mat, so his only real path to victory is beating Buchanan in Neutral most likely - but as you say, there's a lot of work to do there as Josh never appeared to be all that confident, or comfortable, in Neutral or ever very close to even threatening Buchanan offensively.

Nice job nerf.

Thank you--I always want that kind of feedback.

Both have been fixed!

I feel like I watched a different match at 97... Not trying to be overly negative, but I really didn't see Josh as being "right there" with Buchanan. Josh's neutral offense was nonexistent against Buchanan - he never even got Buchanan remotely out of his "comfort zone" in Neutral, while Josh looked uncomfortable, and had to fight off several of Buchanan's attacks, the entire match. Also, let's not forget that all Josh had to do was ride Buchanan for like 7 seconds to take out the RT ADV.... - he couldn't do it, he allowed Buchanan to escape in like 3 seconds! That changed the entire complexion of the match (up to that point, Buchanan had dominated the match, but had not yet won it.... the 3rd Period started with each knowing what needed to be done.... and Buchanan showed precisely how in control of that match he was in the first 3 seconds of the third. Dead cinch lead-pipe lock to win after he escaped essentially right off the whistle.... match was over.).
Red shirt freshman vs 5 yr senior that happens, let's see how they wrestle in a tournament with some fatigue and 3 day weigh ins.

Also believe Teemer may give up stalling points, but his cobra-like strikes and power will defeat Tyler, at least this time.
I’m soooooo happy when I’m this wrong.
In fact, the Tyler/Teemer bout is the one I’ve re-racked most to watch. Not only was granting Jacori a power advantage foolish, but damn if Tyler didn’t look faster, too, especially the few times the cobra chose to strike. That edge exchange where just a few more inches of mat circle gets Tyler a second TD was sweet. No reason he doesn't leap Shapiro as the new #1.

The results are good, but when the highest ranked guy you've is #19 and you won that by a DQ...

Quality of competition counts.

Great night.

A bunch of great matches from our guys obviously. Will touch on a few Iowa things.

Ferrari is going to have a really good career, that kid can wrestle.

What I learned tonight being there was Gabe didn’t duck. You can say a lot of things about the dad, one of the reasons PSU wasn’t interested in Gabe. But he’s not a bad kid. Him talking trash was him trying to get in the lineup, he knew he was sitting.

Ferrari is much better than Gabe. They know Gabe isn’t close to Carter.

It’s Iowa, yes they can be that stupid.

Based on Carters comments, I’m guessing PSU knew Gabe was sitti
Kasak became a PSU legend with one lift!

Last evening’s dual meet against Iowa provided me the most fun I’ve had at a dual since the 19-18 win against Ohio State on February 3, 2018. I will always consider Iowa a worthy opponent, and the environment and wrestling lived up to its billing, as the crowd of 15,998 (ties indoor attendance record) was loud and proud and the wrestling fabulous. I’ve tried to capture a few thoughts about the bouts last evening, a brief summary of the season so for the nine starters that wrestled, and what’s ahead. After that I’ll end on a few comments that made the day extra special for me.

125: Luke Lilledahl (12-1) broke out the offense in a big way, dominant in a technical fall victory against #23 Cruz. It was his most impressive offensive explosion on the season, as his other five tech falls were against lesser competition. His best win on the season is against #6 Smith (NEB), as Lilledahl won’t have a great resume by season’s end. Yet to come is #16 McCrone (tOSU), as the highest ranked opponent yet to wrestle in the regular season. Can only wrestle the guy they put in front of you, so thus far the season is a success, the schedule just didn’t provide Lilledahl with many top guys. The postseason shall be interesting, as the competition will get tougher for Lilledahl. Still he likes the limelight and isn’t fazed by pressure. The Peterson loss is in the rearview mirror.

141: Beau Bartlett (13-0) won in workmanlike fashion. Nothing fancy, just a solid never-in-trouble four point win. Has season wins against #4 Hardy (NEB), #12 Edmonds (MIZZ) and #15 Olivieri (RUT), so a decent resume so far. Upcoming bouts against #11 Lemley (MICH), #1 Mendez (tOSU) and #16 Pucino (ILL), so he has his work cut out. The Mendez bout will be good fun, and they may face each other three times this season.

149: Shayne Van Ness (12-1) put on a show against #4 Parco (#2 on Intermat). A close 4-4 bout in the first period ended as a major decision for Van Ness as the crowd was going bananas. Solid, solid, dominating win against a very talented opponent. Van Ness has already put the #2 Lovett (NEB) loss behind him. This win, against Parco was by far his best win of the season. He has #9 D’Emilio (tOSU) and #15 Webster (ILL) ahead, among others before the postseason.

157: Tyler Kasak (13-0) also put on a show, defeating #1 Teemer by decision. Teemer may be the quickest wrestler I've seen ths year when he decides to go. Kasak could be #1 when the next rankings are released. This was obviously Kasak’s best win in an undefeated season thus far. He’s also beaten #4 Taylor (NEB) and teammate Facundo. The top three at 157, Kasak, Shapiro and Teemer have separated themselves from the pack, so winning is important to secure the #1 seed at NCAA’s. Long way to go…just giving perspective. Yet to wrestle are #6 Miller (MD), #16 Saldate (MICH) and #19 Sasso (tOSU, gives me goosebumps just seeing Sasso on the mat!!), so he has work to do before Big Ten’s.

165: Mitchell Mesenbrink (one “s”!!!) 14-0, was his usual high energy self, winning by technical fall – against the #2 kid in the country!! I can’t remember this much separation between a #1 wrestler and the field in quite a while. Mesenbrink also has a tech fall win against #9 Wilson (NEB), and has #13 Gallagher (tOSU) and #14 Mantanona yet to wrestle in the regular season. Fellow fans…Don’t take Mesenbrink (or others, for that matter) for granted, ever. The sport he is making look easy is not easy at all.

174: Levi Haines (12-1) came within five seconds of a major decision win against #6 Kennedy, winning by 7 points. No flair, just solid wrestling from Haines. And remember, he is up two weight classes from last season. Other best wins so far are against #14 Pinto (NEB) and #20 Turley (RUT), and he has a loss to #1 O’Toole. No shame at all in the O’Toole loss. The Mizzou wrestler is currently injured. I hope for his return by the postseason. Yet-to-come is #5 Kharchla (tOSU), who beat Kennedy in similar fashion. That should be a great bout, with Haines favored.

184: Carter Starocci (13-0) struggled to score against Ferrari, winning by decision with no takedowns. It is always tough wrestling a guy that backs up and plays defense mostly, but Cael has said that a wrestler needs to find a way when that is the case. Starocci’s best win this season is #7 Allred (NEB), a bout he dominated. Yet to wrestle are #10 Smith (MD), #12 Ruth (ILL) and #18 Rogotzke (tOSU) before the postseason.

197: Josh Barr (12-1) lost by decision to the #1 ranked wrestler in the country. It was a one takedown bout, my opinion being that Buchanan won it in the second period with a sustained ride that sapped Barr’s energy. I know Barr is a high energy guy, but give credit to Buchanan, as being ridden takes more energy than riding. Otherwise, why ride? I believe this result could be reversed in the postseason, as Barr was right there with him. No rest for Barr, as he gets #3 Cardenas (MICH) next weekend and #13 Braunagel to end the conference regular season.

285: Greg Kerkvliet (13-0) won by major decision against #10 Kueter, the Iowa football-player-turned-wrestler. It was a dominant win in a season of dominating wins. Kerkvliet’s highest ranked win though was 2-0 against #8 Slavikouski, though it appears there is more to this story (I’ll stop there). Kerkvliet has a solid four Big Ten bouts ahead, against #11 Heindselmann (MICH), #12 Nevills (MD), #7 Feldman (tOSU) and #9 Luffman (ILL). Win those, which he should, and he’ll surely be on the other side of the bracket at Big Ten’s from Steveson (MINN).

To end, I’d like to shout out to a few of my wrestling friends, and two NEW friends, for the enjoyable afternoon yesterday. It is not just about the wrestling to me, it is also about the many, many folks I’ve had the pleasure of knowing and spending time with over the past 50 years+ of following Penn State wrestling. Yesterday, before the match, our gathering included Mrs. Roar, hlstone, PSUPaul and his wife and son, my brother and two new acquaintances. It was a pleasure meeting johnstownsteel and Mrs. johnstownsteel, been looking forward to this for a very long time. GREAT TIME! Thanks all!
Great write up! Such a pleasure to finally meet. Roar and misses Roar are some great people folks! Can't remember the last time I enjoyed an evening like that. Can't wait to see you again.

A bunch of my favorite humans were all together in one place! Awesome!
Was awesome! Can't wait to do it again.

In regards to Mitch in finals last year.
Sometimes a ,"moment" can be difficult on processing what normally is easy .
I remember once having a car pass me on a bad turn when school bus was coming the opposite direction. The car swerved into my front bumper. The driver proceeded to flee the scene. Cops came and I couldn't even remember what color car he was driving. I actually was embarrassed but the adrenaline and "moment" overwhelmed me. I'm certain it can happen in sports.
Note: they caught the driver.
This is what I saw in barrs match. He looked gassed/out of it in the second period and continued till the end almost like he just over amped himself. I believe next mat h against Buchanan will be different, I'm not convinced a blow out but a win yes.

In Mesenbrink's first match last season at the Black Knight Invitational, he definitely got overamped and had a much closer match than expected as a result. Could have happened to Barr. We'll see.

In availability today, Cael acknowledged Barr got tired early, and they’re adjusting his training regimen accordingly.

No doubt there will be several adjustments. Barr was the more gassed this last match, so at least the question of Buch's has thank was answered. Barr couldn't get to his ties, and with Buch keeping him at space, a TD was unlikely. Buch's mat wrestling is still better as well.
This has all the earmarkings IMO of another close bout, with a loss at Big10s, then Barr takes him to the brink at Nationals. We have seen this story play out several times with our freshmen, with many positive results.

Brings to mind Mark Hall’s surprising and bitterly disappointing (for me) loss to Kemerer in the 2020 Iowa dual at Carver.

Mark said later that he got caught up in the excitement of the big dual and matches before his, didn’t manage his energy level well, and ran out of gas.

He reversed the result at B10s 5 weeks later and restored some balance to the universe.

They are looking at it all wrong. Iowa didn't spend a million to lose by 22. They spent a million to lose by 1 less than last year.

Another 23 million this off season and we will see some real changes.
Ok I just thought of something really, really obnoxious. Who wants to pull the trigger?

Someone needs to go to GIA/HR or whatever and start a new thread titled “Here’s What $1 Million in NIL Money Buys You “. Then the only thing to post is the picture of Kasak fist pumping and holding up Teemer. I doubt it will stay up very long but if Slumlord Bob sees it, he’ll be steamed like there’s no tomorrow. 😈

not this go 'round. gabe made his bed. regardless of the reason/s he didn't take the mat, you gotta expect some heckling when you call your shot.
Posters that said they were sitting in the area, said there was no crowd heckling or arguing? People are speculating rampantly that there was… One of the posters that said they were sitting in that area said they saw him arguing with Ferrari and the coaches. Maybe he was just upset he wasn’t wrestling?
