Does Trace return next year?

I don't think the original question was asking if he'll leave for the NFL necessarily. He's a senior, with junior eligibility. I assume he'll graduate before next season. He could choose to move on with his life. I don't think he will, but he could,

If he wants to play in the NFL he probably should leave this year. I can’t see him improving his stock much by staying an extra year. The team probably won’t be as good next year and he risks injury if he stays.

The one thing I know is that people who say he has zero shot know very little about the college and pro game. Will he make an NFL roster? We will see. After seeing the success of McGloin, Wilson, Brees, Tyrod Taylor, Chase Daniel and many other similarly sized QBs, I wouldn't bet against it. Everything the geniuses on this board say about Trace was said about those guys. He has much more arm strength then people give him credit for and there is plenty of tape to prove it. I think there are many on this board who confuse his size and recruiting ranking for a lack of ability. If Darnold made some of the throws Trace made against Michigan and many others this year, they would be pointing to those throws as examples of why Darnold will be a no. 1 pick. TM made the most physically impressive throw in the Rose Bowl of any QB. He dropped a dime to Godwin for our second TD that he threw on the run and travelled nearly 50 yards in the air. He doesn't throw a heater every time. Like other QBs with a good feel for the game, he adjusts ball speed based on the situation. I don't think that novice fans understand that.

I love watching the RPO that PSU runs, but it is not the best offense for preparing NFL QBs. Trace will be an undersized QB with an average arm and little experience reading defenses typically seen in the NFL game. He would need to land in the perfect situation to get a serious look.
So I fully expect him to return. Where else can he have this much fun???

Actually, NFL offenses are starting to use a lot of RPO concepts. In the NFL, the traditional “pro style” offense is a dying breed. Today’s NFL offenses spread people out more then line up in traditional sets. NFL offenses are starting to borrow a lot from modern college offenses. That is why defenses are changing so much in the NFL. For example, You see a lot more LBs that look like hybrid safeties. You see a lot more safeties that look and cover like corners. The value of speed pass rushers are at a premium. This is all because of the wide open nature of modern NFL offenses.

This whole thread high lights the skill and genius of coach Franklin. He was the only coach that could see past the tape measure and realize the total package that Trace brings to the QB position. I wonder how much better GA would have been with even a decent QB the past three years. This question could be asked of dozens of teams that passed on Trace.

IF McSorley goes to the NFL it would be after his senior year and then, as previously mentioned, as a fringe, career backup QB. That being said, I think he will go down as an all-time great PSU quarterback when is career is said and done. The comparison to Flutie is an excellent one, but to that point, I don't think Flutie would be a starting QB in the NFL as it exists today.
Doug Flutie was a back-up QB with Chicago and New England and then went to the CFL for 8 years. Only then did he return to the NFL as a starter.

I watched the game against Iowa last night and their D-Line was batting down balls left and right. Can't see him playing in the NFL unless he takes a detour, but he would be a good CFL QB.

I’d expect him to, assuming JoMo returns. He’d be one injury away from playing all year and he’d be basically guaranteed his senior year as a starter. Wouldn’t get more elsewhere.

It wouldn't make much sense for him to transfer now. His choice is basically play two years at a small FCS school or one year at PSU. Unless he can graduate this year and do that grad transfer thing where he doesn't have to sit out a year at a FBS school???

Trace doesn’t have to be a starting QB, he just has to find a way on an NFL roster. Minimum salary in the NFL is $450,000. That’s more than what most college grads will make.
If he wants to maximize his chances of doing this, he should probably leave after this year.
What more can he prove by staying an extra year?

I don't think Trace's arm is as good as McGloin's. I also think the offense we run isn't conducive to an easy transition to the NFL. I just think those two factors make him too big of a project. Who knows though? Cleveland drafted Johnny Football in the first round with all the same limitations.
And I read recently that he has more win as a Browns starting QB (two) than any of the other guys they drafted after him....

I think Trace leaves. If he stays for another year it becomes difficult to recruit and retain a QB with every class including the guys currently on the roster and committed to PSU. Just my opinion though, what do I know.

Of course, if #26 were to decide to stay, all bets are off.

It might depend on if he finished his degree or if he wants to do some grad work.

Keep in mind we have 69 scholarship players eligible to return nexty year. 25 additional puts us 9 over the limit so a bunch of kids wii have to leave early.

I love Trace but he just doesn't have the NFL measurables. Sorry, he is not Drew Brees or Russell Wilson. CFL is his future, he could crush it up there.

Stevens return is the bigger question. He won't transfer to another FBS school due to sitting out a year, but he could drop down to FCS and keep 2 yrs of elig. I could see him at an NDSU, Richmond, JMU type situation.

Gotta believe that Zembiec is seeing the handwriting on the wall and will likely move on. Sean Clifford is the guy we need to keep happy, along with Stevens. If Stevens loses patience, Clifford would be the guy on opening day of the 2019 season as a redshirt soph. Very similar situation to what Trace had last summer. If Stevens stays, then is Clifford patient enough to stay until fall of 2020 when he would get his shot?

Possibly, but he could play in the NFL and go to school like Urshel or finish later. School will always be there.
Trace seems pretty smart, I’m sure he will do fine whatever he chooses to do.
And I agree, there are a lot of people who will have to leave early, and Trace probably will be one of them.
