Drumfour

Look it up people...I will later for you (if you can't)...in the mean time ask yourself the question of why is a LOI binding...what makes it so...then think about why I mentioned 2012 when the ncaa reformed it's rules to be more specific

I'm waiting.........

Believe you are confused with your terms.

An LOI is not a counter.

You can have more than 25 LOIs in a year. However, the final number of Grant in Aids a school issues is limited to 25 per year. This is NOT determined on LOI day, as some might expect. The date may vary, but it is linked to the opening of full summer practice for a school. At that point, you can only have a maximum of 25 scholarships in an given year.

If an individual's scholarship gets applied to a previous year, it is the granting of the Scholarship that triggers the year, not the LOI.

As noted in a previous post, the number of LOIs a school may issue in one year, may be limited by conference rules. So, it can vary by conference.

Yes...you can have more than 25 LOIs in a year...I have said no different....IN FACT THAT HAS BEEN MY POINT...you are arguing against youself in this...I have said that you can't attribute more than 25 signings to a given year....thus you have to attribute thee excess to either the prior year or year if you have room...what are you confused about

Except I'm 100% correct....art is arguing against something I have not said...I know what he is saying and basically he is telling me I am wrong and then repeats what I said

That's great. I didn't even read anything you wrote. I just know if you are arguing with art on this subject, you're almost guaranteed to be on the wrong end. Maybe that's a bad assumption on my part, but the odds are in my favor.

I'm waiting.........
I'm on my cell so you have to wait...while you are you might want to re-read what I said because you are arguing something different...except that a LOI isn't considered a tender...it is absolutely considered a tender ...though (which we agree upon) it is not attributed specifally to the year offered...and this how many LOIs signed in a year is not limited by the NCAA as a hard cap...it is rolling back and forward...however...the tender needs to be attributed and there is a limit on how many you can attribute per year...

For example...if we put two years in a vacuum...if a school accepts 20 LOIs in year one and attributes all to that year they can then accept 30 LOIs the next year as long as they attribute 5 back to the prior year...in practice that is done through EEs

Okay, if you are correct, it should be a reasonably straightforward exercise for you to cite passage in the NCAA rule book on how signed Letters of Intent, what you call "signings", can be allocated. And do keep in mind that, as TJ pointed out, there is a difference between a signed LOI, again what you call a "signing", and a counter.

If a kid signs a LOI its considered a tender...explain to me how a LOI is binding (for the kid) otherwise....Google is your friend bro

Yes, but 6 or 7 of those count against last year's number. we will likely sign around 28 this class including those EE's.
Don't they have to graduate HS early and start classes at UM in January?

You're not paying attention.

LOI's are not the same as counters.

You are confused.

How many scholarship players does UM have coming back at this point?
That's the million dollar question. We're expecting quite a bit of attrition, and have already seen a couple leave early. General sense is we will sign around 28

Was kind of hoping Franklin's strong start to this class would mean that at this point, he's closing like Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross and reeling in the last few big fish to finish up the class. Instead, he's having to re-sell and re-recruit kids who are now wanting to look around and doing his best to keep what we have. In like a lion,....

the byproduct of having back to back 7-6 seasons imo.

I was also hoping for a big 2017 and I still think it is possible, but we don't seem to have any momentum there either. I know people say early but Alabama already has 3 of the top 8 RBs, ND has 2 of the top 5 TEs, OSU has 10 recruits, etc.

The staff needs to get settled and they need to flip this negative momentum.

Bottom line is you have to go with what you have. No need to fret.

Dunno, Bob. It looks to me like the negative recruiting that is being used against JF has been pretty effective. In addition, Harbaugh's great season and the ease with which Michigan traditionally recruits has given them significant momentum. If Harbaugh can help himself and hurt us at the same time, he's going to do it, and that looks like his game plan. Next year, it's likely he'll have another good team and have a good season. It's going to be imperative for JF that he and the rest of the staff get their acts together and win at least 8 games, or this is going to continue. JF may well turn out to be a good coach, but it's unlikely that he's any better than Harbaugh, so it's going to come down to talent. JF needs to make sure that the gap doesn't get any wider.

You and I understand that these things take time, and we know what kind of material JF had when he arrived here, but 17yr olds can't see that whole picture.

Uh, no. The limit of 25 is on the number of initial grants-in-aid a school can extend, not the number of recruits signing Letters of Intent. NCAA has no restriction on the latter, though some conferences do.

While the NCAA has no restriction on LOIs in a given year, the b1g does though, no? I understand not all conferences have such restrictions, but I thought the b1g did. Also, aren't the SEC schools one of the biggest abusers of this loophole in the rules that is extremely unfair to, and abusive of, HS kids and their families?

First, the LOI and "signing" is entirely outside of the purview of the NCAA, so there is no NCAA rule or limit. The NCAA rule is quite simple to understand: a school is allowed to bring in as many as 25 on scholarship so long as it remains at or under the overall limit of 85. A school can sign 102 and the NCAA doesn't give a shit so long as only 25 or fewer enroll during the relevant academic year. Adjustments can be made by applying early enrollees to the previous class if that class were under 25 and the school is still within the limit of 85.

The Big Ten has a rule that schools are not permitted to sign three more than the apparent number of available slots it has. So if a school has 15 players that have exhausted eligibility, two that have declared early for the NFL, and three that have announced that they are leaving for other reasons, it can sign 23 (20 available slots plus 3). Then, it has to explain to the league office how it intends to get to 85, or where those three slots are coming from.

SEC has a rule that schools are only allowed to sign 25. So how do they bring in more? Some are early enrollees, as explained above. And some are so-called "blueshirts" who don't sign LOIs. But that's another mess that confuses people with short attention spans, so I'm not going to get into it. Rant on.

True that Harbaugh will do whatever it takes, including vicious negative recruiting against CJF. He will put family members of recruits on the payroll or hire their high school coach, but the recruits wavering will still drive him insane. He just announced that Rashan Gary's high school coach, Chris Partridge, is now signed to a full time defensive staff position. Why now? He is losing his mind over the real possibility Gary may wander away. Same reason he has Drumfour on an official visit this weekend. Harbs and Urbs both know that Franklin knows, the best players make the best coaches. Of course they will use every advantage to destroy CJF. We need to rally around our coach and be thrilled that others recognize his recruiting skill.

1. Do you have any evidence of JH viciously negatively recruiting Franklin?

2. Family members in the payroll? He hired Gwendolyn bush because of her connections and influence in Florida. She was very involved and it was a smart hire. Her son was a grad transfer from Stanford who played sparingly.

3. Hiring high school coaches was incredibly smart. Partridge has really opened up recruiting in jersey and now he has an opportunity to coach under harbaugh. He also hired a coach from st Edwards, Ohio and one from Florida will likely replace partridge's vacated role.

4. Why partridge now? Well, because we lost two coaches this off season. Partridge coached LBs during bowl practices. In fact, durkin tried to hire him at Maryland. Either way he would have been in harbaugh's staff and wouldn't be coaching Gary. This has nothing to do with Gary.

My point is that recruiting skill only takes you so far, hence the negative recruiting this year, fairly or unfairly. JF has got to produce on the field.

Harbaugh is basically doing the same thing that CJF did to Flood at Rutgers. CJF took about 2-3 Rutgers commits his first year and Barkley was even a Rutgers commit before Franklin got him. Harbaugh and Meyer basically are taking the top level NJ recruits with PEnn State getting second tier. Maryland is now taking back the top Maryland recruits. I think Penn State will need to recruit more nationally.

In the radio business, we talked about stealing our competitor on air announcers to hurt them because we could and we could afford it.

Durkin knows the drill and thou doth protest too much. Sure the hiring was smart and had everything to do with Gary as well as the Jersey connection. Why be so sensitive about putting a halo on a maniacal recruiter? I have no problem if there are no rules being broken, and support coach Franklin returning the favors in kind, when able. Competing on the field is highly dependent on having the best weapons. Similar to the golf match being won on the first tee, when negotiating the handicaps.

Oh....and Rutgers ......WHO, what? Thanks for the advice anyway.

Yeah, I don't fault Harbaugh for doing that. It's a dirty business, and so long as no rules are broken I have no beef. If he's ultimately a bad coach, then they have to deal with it. If he's a good coach, then who's complaining?

It's certainly better than the way the SEC operates, as a branch of the Federal Reserve.

Maybe I took more offense to your post then I should have. Sorry about that. It certainly is a new era for UM recruiting.

I don't disagree, but this is a relatively new trend. Kids are wanting to win now and it's hard to sell them on 'building' something. They're more easily sold on being part of a winner. This will take time; hopefully our recruits see that and find the effort and work required meaningful and worth doing.
