FARGO

Maybe this is the end result, but I dispute it being inevitable.

We had an exchange student from South America my HS SR year who barely spoke a lick of English when he arrived. If Twitter existed then, there would have been no English in them. We didn't have ESL services in rural Central PA then. He graduated with us, went home for a year, then returned to the US to attend college. (He graduated on time with a business degree.)

If Echemendia wants to consider a grayshirt, his English could progress similarly in a year.

If that's not his plan, that's up to him. Either way, it's good to have options.
That's one of the reasons he's not taking it and going the college route now .The main reason is hes a freestyle kid who has about 25 folkstyle matches wrestled in his life.He has Olympic dreams so learning folkstyle isn't in his plans

He might be OK. The guy I'd be more worried about is Singletary -- he'll probably have to cut to 197 once Kerk arrives ... and then maybe Amos comes as well?

But remember, Cael is the one who recruits over guys.

Singletary was pushing towards 240. He got in much better shape....and was much more successful by the end of the year but was still about 230. If he is going to be a legit heavy this year......dropping to 197 12 months from now?? I would guess a transfer to be more likely. That said.....I think he will contend for AA status this year......especially with Stoll graduating :)

EDIT: Chase Wrestled at 97KG (213) this summer and will again at U23...…..Pass the Rice Cakes :)

Amos has declared he's going 197 in college. Maybe that doesn't hold for 4-5 years, but that's the reason he's dropping to 195 this year.
I agree with the VT assertion. Parkersburg is a weird town and those folks stick together. Haught should have the inside track here.

Plus, Amos is rolling kids now and looks good, but I don’t think it’s very close between him and Beard.

I thought the Catka signing was a little against the Haught connection but it seems like he’s dedicated to the 197 plan.

I think it’s either Columbus or Blacksburg and no one else.

Seth Shumate just doubled up at the cadet level. Kid is an absolute beast! Go watch his Greco finals match. Techs the kid in about a minute with a couple incredible throws. No one is close to him in his age group. I think he is the best rising Sophomore in the country. He’s an Ohio boy so I wouldn’t be surprised if OSU has the inside track on him however. I sure hope not

Within the context of Fargo this year, yes.

Big picture, he looks like a college HWT -- in which case, Kolby Franklin will have a lot to say about who's best in the age group.

Kolby Franklin is amazing as well. Shumate being 195 as a sophomore makes it likely he ends up a heavyweight but he seems short and already extremely thick. Also looks like he doesn’t cut anything probably because he doesn’t have to. Will definitely be interesting going forward.

Has anyone ever compiled the data to see how many Fargo champs have wrestled for PSU? With all the talk of Fargo being one the best/hardest/biggest tournaments it got me wondering since PSU has been so dominant.

Seems to me like the eastern states don’t get as fired up about it - makes sense since Fargo might as well be Mongolia for someone from Bergen County say.

Illinois gets to puff out its chest and then most of those guys get beat by guys from the larger Caelavania Region

I'm super light on knowledge and access to data about many things Freestyle, so I bought Jason Bryant's Fargo Almanac for $20: http://www.mattalkonline.com/cadet-junior-nationals-all-american-almanac/

It's 187 pages and has a super thorough listing of historical Fargo data, but the only cross-references, from Fargo/Freestyle, to College Team/Folkstyle I see is a one-page listing of the 2019 College AA's, with their team & college placement, who have ever placed at Fargo. But you'd have to look up elsewhere in the doc what Fargo placement each had--and that's only for this one year.

There's tons of organization by HS "Team" = State, but maybe if we ask nicely & donate nicely, future Almanac revisions could include this important crossover data? Pretty please, @JasonBryant ?

I'm not a subscription-level giver, but you can now donate to JB's Mat Talk network in single donations: http://www.mattalkonline.com/contribute/

Is a Fargo double his pinnacle? Did he enter/place in the Open or qualify/place for Cadet WTT?

Seems every day some new heavyweight emerges, “ stud”, “ beast”, “ hammer” we call them.

They cant all be “ beasts”. Double up at WTT, then he can look down at all challengers.

Regardless, congrats young man!!

Shumate is a top 10 prospect for 2022. This wasn't a fluke.

Disney Duals is closer than Fargo for everyone in PA except Erie. Plus if anyone wants/needs to fly, MCO is mega cheaper with nonstops.

Then again, Georgia sent a decent contingent to Fargo ...

Good point on the costs. If ever needed Orlando/Sanford is even cheaper and only 10 miles away from MCO.

He was a freshman large school division state champion in Ohio. Also was runner-up in Akron to Kyle Haas. Shumate teched Kolby Franklin at Akron in under 3 min as well. I believe that Haas is a year older. Haas beat Shumate in 2 straight but the level of wrestling in both matches was extremely high. I understand what you are saying about people always anointing the next “great one” or the kid being an absolute beast but in this case it’s deserved. Go watch the kid and then come tell me what you think. I’m not being snarky. I’d actually love to get your opinion on him as a prospect. See if you are seeing the same thing that I am.

Im not here to knock a kid, and if he is anywhere near me (FARgo aint within my limits) I will check him out.

Sat next to Sheldon Seymour's parents during semis/wrestlebacks this morning. Super good family. Way more humble than I ever would have been, making a Fargo finals. Am now in his cheering section permanently.

R16: dunbar gets in on a lefty high crotch, opponent drapes over and locks around dunbar's body. dunbar lifts him up high and puts him down on both his shoulders for the victory by fall in 12 seconds.

i don't love the instantaneous fall in freestyle but i do love have a psu guy in the quarters.

any further info on Dunbar after his win in round of 16 ... didn’t see any updates after this post

sorry i missed the quarterfinal match which dunbar apparently lost 8-9. he was up 6-1 at the break and up 7-5 with 45 seconds left but it looks like the other kid got 2 quick take downs then probably danced around as dunbar got a point with 6 seconds left. the other guy finished 6th.

bloodround looks like another heartbreaker. dunbar got a takedown with 53 seconds left to go up 5-3, then gave up a takedown at 0:44 do go down 5-5 on criteria. after some injury time the other guy scored another takedown with 8 seconds left and held on to win 7-5 over dunbar. the other guy finished 4th.

good showing from dunbar after not being mentioned in any of the preview articles.
