FC: 247 Sports ranks the Top 25 best college football facilities....

With college football inevitably going pro with pay for play it’s time for ending the facilities race with donor money. Football will pay for itself or it should go away.

alumni should put their money in academic facilities alone IMHO.

So you're going to tell donors where they can spend their money? Good luck with that.

So you’re okay with 5 fewer Micah Parson’s level players on the team? Then no bitching from you every year we don’t make the playoffs.

Yes I’m fine with losing out on a handful of players that are basing their college decision on locker sleeping pods. The team can still be competitive without that, even if not at the Alabama/ Clemson level.

If you want to follow the Ohio St/ SEC model of football above all else that’s fine. Just make sure you don’t ever complain here or give any snide comments about Ohio St or any SEC teams and how they do things.

That’s simply not true. You want to be a perennial playoff team you need those extra 5 5* players that you don’t care to have. Those kinds of players get you over the hump.

PSU doesn’t have those facilities now and look- 5* Micha’s still on the team. It doesn’t rule all these kids out, just a few.

You don’t need to sell your soul with over the top nonsense for wins. If that means PSU is only in the running for a playoff spot each year rather than a reserved spot like Clemson and (usually) Bama, I’m ok with that. We’ll just agree to disagree. ;)

Currently we are a team that contends for the playoff but has not gotten over the hump. In three of the past four seasons we were one or two wins away, some of those losses were very close.

Is it worth it to build the facilities and increase the probability of getting those players, and slightly increasing our odds of getting to the playoff?

It seems like we would be talking about a massive expensive for a marginal gain. Is it worth it? I think it's a legitimate question at this point. The additional benefits are limited and the additional costs are unbounded

How did Saban win those championships before he got those facilities built?

At some point it's just nonsense. Even though I really like college football, the reality is that it's not that important. We were on the verge of making the CFP, which only takes 4 teams, in 2016, 2017, and 2019. And we went to an NY6 bowl in all of those years. But we are supposed to just blindly accept that PSU should spend around $100 million to attract some teenager who is a 5 star instead of a 4 star (according to some loser on the internet)? Sorry, I don't buy that it's worth it

The inevitable crash of the education boom/scam will require less, not more buildings and high priced professors, no?

Liberal Arts colleges and small private schools will be suffering far more than the big state related universities. People will pay at schools that offer a degree worth having. Another reason for alumni to focus on academic and not sport funding.

They will certainly suffer first.

Inevitably the whole system will collapse as employers realize that the whole system is antiquated, and producing people that hold master's degrees and Ph.D's but can't do anything.

The facilities won’t matter much soon. $ in the pocket will. Pay for play changes everything and there is little discussion about the huge impact getting $ to players is going to bring.

There are so many factors that go into any prospect's decision on where to take his talent that, for most, I have a hard time believing that facilities are anything more than a tie-breaker somewhere down the list. If I'm mistaken, then we'd better prepare for the juggernaut that's going to be Northwestern.

It depends on whether and how it will be regulated. If a conference like the B1G sets rules that say every player is paid on the same schedule, then you might retain some semblance of normality.

If it is just a free for all with huge contracts being handed out based on recruiting rankings, then I hope PSU would just voluntarily drop down a division. That is simply not college athletics

Agree. No need for $150 million football buildings built from alumni gifts.

I’m not sure what the debate is. If they want to be a top 10 program PSU will have to participate in the facilities arms race. Joe Paterno at 47 would have been pushing just as hard as Franklin for upgrades.
Bingo... it’s a nuclear arms race. Ranked 19th... outside of the top 25 means the program is slipping. You can not be elite if you do not have the facilities. The needs are great and once the BOT recognizes Paterno properly the cash will flow. But they do not care because they are fleecing the university anyway. Sounds familiar doesn’t it.
