Jets quarterback Christian Hackenberg is still not playing and the team has no plans to change that even after starter Josh McCown suffered a season-ending injury. So when his teammates rave about his performance on the practice field, it rings a little hollow.

Still, several Jets teammates say Hackenberg looks great in practice, and is notably better now than he was last year as a rookie. The word from the Jets’ facility is that he’s developing.

But if that’s the case, why not give him a chance to play? Hackenberg has still yet to play a down in his NFL career, which is extremely rare for a second-round draft pick at the end of his second season. From 2011 through 2016, the only quarterbacks drafted in the first two rounds who didn’t start a game in their first two seasons were Brock Osweiler, Jimmy Garoppoloand now Hackenberg. Osweiler and Garoppolo were playing behind the two best quarterbacks in recent history. Hackenberg is playing behind Bryce Petty.

At some point, the Jets are going to need to find out what they have in Hackenberg. If he’s truly showing promise on the practice field, it’s odd that they’re not willing to give him a shot. But the Jets say they’re sticking with Petty. Hackenberg appears set to finish his second season having taken exactly zero snaps in the NFL.

Well, baby steps....I think last week was actually the first week that he was active for a game, so this will be his second in a row!

Well, IF he ever gets a chance to play and IF he has a good game and IF the Jets were to win, here is the natural headline: “Team X” gets Hacked!

I wish the best for Hack. Contrary to a lot of posters here, Hack stayed the course and came to PSU during troubled times. A true Penn Stater in my eyes.
I have not read anything on this site that is critical of Christian's character, sense of commitment, or loyalty to PSU. I don't know what any of that has to do with an assessment of his current status or future as an NFL QB.

I have no knowledge of the situation, but maybe they are worried about throwing Hack into a bad situation are taking a step back in his development... it’s not like he was a first round draft pick that then need to play in order to justify the pick.

I have no problem with them taking their time developing him. At some point Petty will have to sit do to injury and Hack being over prepared won't be a problem.

Well that thing about him. He has always looked great in practice but not so much in games. I’m rooting for him hard to succeed.

Many people here went apeshit when he allegedly slighted Franklin by not thanking him when he declared for the nfl draft.

I think you’d have to go back a lot further than 2011 to find a QB drafted in the first two rounds who didn’t play a single snap in his first two regular seasons. It is what it is.

Yep. Whenever an organization says a player is still developing, after 2 years and after being given every opportunity to start or at least be #2 .... you know what you have.

Christian's situation with the Jets could be as simple as this: Unlike baseball, most NFL contracts are not 100% guaranteed money. The Jets can keep Hack on the practice squad etc. until the guaranteed percentage of his deal has expired. They can coach him, use him on the scout squad or any fashion they choose during that time period, without additional cost beyond that $$. Once that % is reached, we will know precisely what their (the Jets organization) thinks. I wish him well.....why wouldn't everyone?
There were some ruffled feathers at the end in Jacksonville, but I think everyone has moved on and patched things up.

They haven't cut him. It's not like he was a top 5 pick in the era of guaranteed rookie contracts. Apparently, he's worth what they are paying him to do what he's done thus far. Beyond that, unless you go to practice you can only go by what they say.

He’s still recovering from the PTSD as a result of all of those sacks....

Yep if he looked good in practice he would have played some in a game. The logic doesn’t add up. If They draft another QB this year He will be done in NY

I predicted Hack would be out of the league in 3 years. He'll probably be released next preseason so if he dosent make another team's roster his career will be over in two.

Hope the kid somehow improves, but its not looking good.

It takes time to recover from PTSD. And if he doesn't recover while still in The League he still would have made more than I in my lifetime of long hours at a computer in a cold room with no windows. All a matter of perspective.

R U kidding me?

Several try to make up stuff because hack forgot to mention CJF when he went pro. Several have started hack hates CJF and that CJF told hack to go pro and leave because he was going to start #9.

To the OP, The jets want to preserve his redshirt.

It's not what the players think, it's what the coaches think.

If there was a conversation, it turned out to be a very positive one for the football program. I doubt PSU would have been 21-5 if a decision had not been made to steer a different course.
I recall things a little differently. I thought that this site (at the time ) was pro Hack and criticized CJF because he didn't know how to "coach" a special talent.

He'll get waived in the off season. Someone else will sign him, but then will be waived again before the start of next season.

I've been of the opinion that Hack was told he wasn't going to start his senior year- but that doesn't make me a hater. I thought he was a great kid, just not a fit for the offense Franklin wanted to run.

As to his future in the NFL, it's unfortunate that he went to the Jets- NE would have been a better destination. Obviously his window is less wide open than it was, the next stop will be definitive, I imagine. I hope he succeeds.

Looks like Hack will play against Tommy the cheater this week.

Connor Hughes reports Jets quarterback Christian Hackenberg was getting some work with the first team offense at practice.

Wednesday is typically the first day the team installs the game plan for the week so this is worth watching.

Todd Bowles, who had been steadfast in past weeks that Hackenberg would not play took a different tone today.

I don’t think it matters much which of the two plays this Sunday against the Patriots. Hackenberg hasn’t done much to earn the opportunity, but Bryce Petty has played poorly enough to justify a benching. The Jets can’t expect quality play either way.

The one hope I have is the Jets don’t do this halfway. If you want Hackenberg in the lineup, let him start and play the full game. Give him a week to implement the full gameplan at practice. Giving two shaky quarterbacks half a loaf further reduces whatever limited chance these guys have at

Passing of the torch!

i would add one more data point = the 2018 draft. if the Jets draft a QB high or trade to get one, then that is all you need to know.
