This guy should have been let go. He had one exceptional recruiting class in 8 years and still could not get into NCAA's. Program going no where. Pat seems like a good guy but not the right guy.

The reality is that this is what happens when kids commit to a school exclusively because of their relationship with the head coach and that head coach’s job appears to be in very real jeopardy. McKoy ended up getting UNC and NC State offers, and Brown-Jones is going to get heavy interest from the big players on the AAU circuit this summer. There’s no sense in keeping your wagon hitched to Pat (and Penn State) at this point, especially if you’re a 2020 going into the biggest recruiting period for 2020s.

I highly doubt his decommit is due to Chambers future. Probably has to do with bigger and better programs showing interest.

Processed? That clears the path for Lamar to stay without anyone else leaving.

Isn't this kid a 2020 class recruit?

Nothing to do with Lamar, who could come back for 2019, but would be gone in 2020 nonetheless...

This program will just never pick up traction. I think its time for a new leader. You look at the tourney, and there are all these teams that quite frankly I've never heard of or seen, and the talent looks better. They play with the big boys. How are they doing it?

Based on what he said, with AAU's coming up, he expects better offers. Kids play BBall to get to the NBA. PSU simply has a poor track record putting kids in the NBA compared to tons of other schools. hell, we have been one of the top 68 teams in the nation for how long (AKA big dance).

It takes a lot of work and luck to build a program in Basketball. This kid is hoping to go to Villanova or many of the other programs that will get him more exposure so he can leave after one to two years.

Its a business decision. Really good kids aren't going to come to PSU for the "education", "family atmosphere" or "student life".

Substitute Harvard for PSU wrt bball players...

Eight years and no Big Dance appearances. That couldn’t be the reason.

The kid is looking at the AAU. Obviously he has his sights higher than Pat.

With players overlooked by the big boys, with players that their coaches have seen talent in and that those coaches helped develop into key contributors to winning programs. In BB just like in football, there are late bloomers and diamonds in the rough. But in BB, unlike football, it really only takes a few great players to lead a well coached team into the NCAA tourney. That's why I believe a good coach can assemble players, develop their talent, and execute good game day strategies and turn around a college BB team, and do it in a rational amount of time. i.e. not in the 9+ years that Pat has flailed away at it....

While there are others who seem to think PC develops kids, The overall reality is that he doesnt compared to other programs. Recruits notice this.

Does this guy realize he is throwing away a chance to hang out in the new players lounge at the BJC ?

Well, some online sports outlet had Chambers as one of the top 10 coaches at developing talent. You may be unhappy with his win totals, but he is competing with recruiting classes in the bottom third of the big ten.

He's also finishing in the bottom third of the Big Ten.

Yep. Bad situation and not at all unlike 2002 when the wheels came off for Dunn.

By all appearances, the AD didn't fire Pat because he was in year 1 of a contract. If it had been year 2 or 3 he would have been fired. Now everyone is thinking he'll be gone after next year. Even if he does reach the NCAA tournament next year, he won't recover the 2020 class. The only thing that could really fix this is having a breakout season where he comes close to winning the big ten and gets ranked really high. I'm not so sure anything he has done until now creates any confidence of that happening

This wasn’t a referendum on Chambers’ overall success, but to refute the claim about not developing players.

Chambers would be well served to recruit better (though criticism of his coaching is still fair).

He just got a very much underrated recruiting class to sign with Penn State. Of course two of the under the radar recruits blew up all of a sudden and they are now going to go somewhere with a higher basketball visibility/tradition. It’s hard to fault Chambers for losing a recruit to someone like UNC and it’s hard to fault these kids for wanting to go to UNC.

"it’s hard to fault these kids for wanting to go to UNC." - Agree 100%

"It’s hard to fault Chambers for losing a recruit to someone like UNC" - Disagree 100%. If we want Penn State to be able to compete for Big Ten championships, our coach has to be able to compete with other top programs, like a UNC or MSU for recruits.

Yeah hes the 'shot Dr' according to some but outside of normal development from any standard college coaching staff, have his kids gotten better because of him? NO. Who has he 'developed?' Reaves, I will give some credit to but he was still a poor passer and decision maker, only improvement was his 3 pt shot, which his % went down later in the season. Banks, Jack, Washington, Foster, Moore, etc no development over 4 years. Taylor maybe some but not more than the mean.

I agree with you 100%. After eight years, Chambers has made little to no progress competing with top programs for recruits. He has not elevated the program. He should have been fired in March.
