fc OT active shooter right now (10:25 am) at OSU on CNN no link

Been watching the local Columbus news. First heard about the shooting when driving back home this AM and the radio DJ broke into the middle of a song to announce the active shooter alert.

Glad my daughter graduated from there this past spring. Due to the significant amount of crime on and around the OSU campus we were always fearful that something might happen to her. Lots of muggings, assaults, etc. She texted me when this was happening and said where this occurred on campus is where used to walk to class all the time (she received the alert on her phone even though she is not a current student).

Local news said a red SUV intentionally crashed into the Chem E building and 2 people got out, one with a knife and the other with a gun. A fire alarm was pulled around the same time. Also 2 people just led away from the nearby parking garage in handcuffs. Possible terrorist attack?

I thought the same. It will be interesting to hear what the Columbus police say when they get a better view of the big picture. Usually these shootings are lone gunman who snap for whatever reason and shoot. To pull a fire alarm and then (reportedly) run down people leaving the building and then 2 people leave the car to continue the attack- 1 with a machete? Maybe this is more than your typical shooting.

First and foremost, it involves death. You can call injured parties casualties, but it isn't accurate.

Yeah, that's why you hear every night on the news after reporting on a car accident that there "were no casualties." Or "there were 2 casualties".

You hear the word casualty more in events where unlawful force was used on the victims. It doesn't make it wrong though.

Vice News reporting campus now secure. They report only one perp - dead.
I guess we will soon see. There is often a lot of confusion and inaccurate reports about additional perps in these tragedies.

Because the news is always accurate in their use of words/definitions/ etc. Seriously, just go to a dictionary. Knowledge is your friend.

An eyewitness is now reporting that injuries are from the vehicle attack on the people. He said he was near and did not hear any shooting or see anyone wounded.
Looks like they are now in a position of securing the scene and insuring no suspects are still at large.

Yawn. It was irresponsible of the poster to say there were 7 casualties. That was my point. When they totaled up the "casualties" from the Titanic, did they include everyone w/ frostbite?

Just an observation....

It's funny how we call these incidents "active shooters" and not "terrorist event".

There is time to determine the intent after the attackers have been stopped. All that really matters while the scene is active is notifying those at risk and stopping the attack. The term "active shooter" communicates the current threat.

When you understand the actual definition of the term "casualty," as opposed to some comic book/10th grader understanding, it is not irresponsible at all. The writer does not take responsibility for a reader too ignorant or lazy to know the meanings of the words--that is on the reader.

Lots of information and some is contradictory about gun wounds.
Press conference by the OSU Pres. in a few minutes

Yawn again. Go back to praying the perp was an NRA member w/ a Trump hat on.

Let's not speculate. Let the police do their job and sort things out.

I'm not sure these events are always terrorism because they may or may not be politically/socially motivated.

Listening to the Columbus scanner, there was a report that a suspect said they were tired of how conditions were in Columbus. However, it was long enough after the fact I couldn't tell if they were talking about OSU or something else.

"the Watts Hall"

Would an American say it that way? Seems unlikely, imho.

Do you know where this web site originates? What caused you to use it for your news?

When I moved to Arizona from PA, one of the first things I noticed was that people called the highways "the I10" or "the Loop 101" instead of just route 10 or route 101. It may well just be a regional dialect thing.

Not in Columbus. Except, of course, the Ohio State.

Headline News just reported that 10 people were injured. Only three shots were fired, all were to take down the perp. This is only the TV News Network that had any coverage from when I found out about the incident 5 minutes ago

The 2 taken away in handcuffs from the parking garage have been released.

Apparently police just being cautious and they were let go. This is from 10tv news.

Now looks like single perpetrator with no gunshots originally fired.

Sounds like someone who went off their rocker and decided to try and kill or injure as many as possible before they got taken out.

like usual there was a lot of doubling down on stupid and personal attacks... even in a thread about a potential active shooter... seems a lot of folks on here need to do some serious self reflecting... damn people grow up! Someone lost their life, and multiple people seriously injured and you come on here to joke about it, attack each other, and throw insults around... simply wow.

Thank God at this point bad guy is only DOA. Reports are he was Somali so it will be interesting to see if this plays out as a "lone wolf" terror attack (with ISIS related back story) or just a pissed off person where nationality/religious background immaterial.
