As the Jets have floundered about at quarterback this season, the guy they spent a second-round pick on hasn’t been a factor at all.

But Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey objected to classifying rookie quarterback Christian Hackenberg as a “mystery,” and offered what amounts to the most vigorous defense to date of a guy who has become an afterthought behind Ryan Fitzpatrick and Bryce Petty.

“I don’t like that word,” Gailey said, via Daniel Popper of the New York Daily News. “I think he’s a developmental player at this point. There’s a lot of talent there. The sky’s the limit.”

The Jets are as curious about his potential as anyone, but since he’s third on the depth chart, he gets so few reps in practice that they can’t accurately measure his progress.

“He gets scout team reps and that’s what he gets,” Gailey said. “He gets the pre-practice individual throws. He’s learning every day about when to throw the ball, how to throw the ball. Up here it’s different than it is in college. He’s learning a great deal.

“To me, he’s gotten better every week. He understands the game better. He understands the defenses better. He understands protections better. That’s all a part of the growth process.”

And the Jets seem content to wait to see the growth at another time, rather than rolling him out in a lost season.

But I thought BO'B was a QB guru???

OB had him as a frosh so yeah he didn't develop him into a PRO QB in one year, but he certainly helped MM. Coach speak is funny and even more so when people try to make points using them.

He's also only 6 months older than Trace McSorley. CH = February 14, 1995; TM = August 23, 1995.

It makes sense that he is "developmental" relative to the NFL

As a sometimes Jets fan it seems like a waste of a 2nd round pick. That said, I wish him the best and think he will add value at some point for the Jets in the coming years as a starter.

Chan Gailey sucks at QB evaluation.....See Ryan Fitzpatrick.

That said, it doesn't mean Hack can't be a decent QB in the NFL

It THINK it was obvious to EVERYONE that Franklin's "system" would not work for a traditional drop back type QB. Actually it hurt his development. No one could predict OB leaving AND the massive loss on the OL. So the "perfect BAD storm for Hack".
I do not know if he can be an NFL QB but he will get the training and then his shot, so who knows.

Franklin is NOW playing and recruiting HIS type of QB !!!

True. Franklin and Hack were not a match in terms of style. It was a forced marriage that they made work for 2 years...time for some to get over that stuff.

Thanks for the only sensible post in this thread. It is remarkable just how maturely Hack handled the situation he was in at the age he was tossed into it.

I don't think Hack had much choice but to enter the draft. He wasn't ready, but he wasn't going to start at PSU this year anyway.

I hope he gets a chance when he's ready.
