Not that it matters much because it's over for now but, your timeline is wrong. They sent out the threatening letter first then someone took it to the local news. It then broke nationally and the person offered to pay. If it wasn't taken to the local media, who knows what would have happened?This is one of the most ridiculous unforced errors I have seen in a long, long time. You have a debt of $22k and a person offers to pay the debt in full. Done. That's it. The district is no longer in the red.
Instead they refuse, send a ridiculous letter that anyone with a brain had they looked at it would have torn it up on the spot, and then when it became a national story they had to walk it all back with egg on their face.
