Despite losing Julian Fleming to the our Top BIG rival and interstate nemisis, CJF and Penn State has been doing fairly well keeping the top PA talent at home. See the attached article from Penn Live and then you realize we’ve recruited PA. well since Franklin’s arrival and the bottom line is we are now pursuing and winning better recruits from out of state, as the PA talent pool continues to shrink from its days as a true hotbed for FBS talent. Not making any excuses for losing Fleming, but this appears to be more of a rogue exception, then an alarming trend IMO. http://fw.to/mBx21P

I preface this with knowing we lost D’Andre Swift to Georgia 2 year ago, but we already had Saquon Barkley and Miles Sanders, so it wasn’t a total surprise to lose the top rated RB in the state that year with the barn full. RB is clearly a position that we have and continue to recruit at an elite level.

How bout who cares. The coaches will find a great player who wants to play for PSU.

A slight issue I had were the comments Fleming made relative to Justin Shorter. I thought the comments were rather lame, when you consider the injury to Shorter and the contributions of Hamler and Dotson. Early playing time is earned and Shorter admitted his struggles last year, which now positions him to ‘dominate’ this year in his redshirt freshman season. Comments from Fleming below:

“I thought, they got the No. 1 receiver last year, and, he had a little injury in spring ball or whatever, but for him not to be utilized at all throughout the offense, I did see that throughout the year. I didn’t agree with it,” Fleming said. “You have to play your best players and obviously he’s a freak. He’s 6-3, 6-4, 215 pounds and they just didn’t utilize him whatsoever.”

“That was one of the big things I really always thought about and it kind of took its toll a little bit, just seeing the No. 1 kid go in and not play at all,” continued Fleming. “I think he played like three games so he’ll be good for a redshirt year, but just to come in right away and have no immediate impact and not be able to get on the field as much as you’d like – whether it be that he wasn’t producing enough or anything like that or he wasn’t coached well enough – he still was the No. 1 kid and didn’t get on the college field probably as much as he wanted to see. I saw that from a distance and analyzed that a little bit.”

Another kid that knows more than the coaches. Dodged a bullet with this one it seems.

Fleming is a coach, too? Wow Franklin really blew that one. Could have had a player/coach. Kid is pretty cocky kid. Hope he has game to back up his criticism of his home state team and big rival. Hope Fields can get him the ball..

It's interesting. The board celebrates when we land a kid like Fleming. When we lose a kid like that the board says who cares, we'll be fine.

Why is that interesting? Isn’t that what fans are supposed to do? Celebrate when you land a good one and hope you get another good one when you don’t land one?

I wonder how long till Wolve1972 finds this thread, and tells us that Jimmy gets every top recruit in Michigan. Except when he doesn’t have available scholarships, because he’s closing all the number one kids in other states who are dying to play for him.

Fleming will be 20 years old his freshman year at the OSU, so he better produce early or he'll have fewer years to play in his prime at the next level.

Kid is not a fair term for Fleming. I believe he was in the same kindergarten class as Franklin.

Fleming seemed to me to be a good kid who developed a great relationship with Hartline and his heart was at OSU. No problem with that, good luck to you except against us. But then he has to go out and throw psu coaches under the bus with the Shorter comments. So in Fleming’s world, the same staff that put freshmen like Dotson, Hamler and Friermuth on the field to great success, were too dumb to figure out Justin Shorter? Sounds like he’s repeating the negative recruiting line that Hartline put in his ear. Whatever. I really hope Shorter dominates this year.

It will be nice to see Shorter smoke the Buckeyes for a couple TDs . Then Fleming can analyze that a little bit.

Shorter had a dislocated knee cap. It is a fairly serious injury. Was Fleming at all of practices? I guess he believes that being ranked # 1 in high school guarantees him a starting position in college? Well, he plays at a Class 2A school in High School and isn't exactly playing against great competition. I am not sorry to lose him. Basically, I hope he plays and Parsons lights him up.

He's "dominating" against 5'7" coal region kids with Slavic surnames and he's like 20 years old. This kid would be average in every classification above AAA

He’s not average by any means and would be a great high school player anywhere. However, his age must be taken into consideration. I was a sophmore incollege at 19 and would’ve dominated in high school at that point.

^^^^^^^ Yup, I was 17 when I graduated and was 6’ 1” 180 lbs., then grew to 6’3” 215 lbs the next year as a freshman in college. In fairness many kids are held back now and are closer to 19 when they graduate, but it’s a huge advantage in any case against younger kids still developing physically ^^^^^^^^^

Of course you hope for another good one. That doesn't mean it didn't hurt to
So what’s your point for wasting time posting.

I'm just trying to bring some objectivity to some people on this board. If it was going to be awesome to land a 5* recruit it's ridiculous to say things like we don't need him or I could care less when we lose one. We can overcome it but I think it's silly to deny that it was a big loss.

you do not lose what you never had

Franklin went on a rant about becoming elite. Elite programs (AL, GA, CLEM, OSU) recruit at the very highest levels. Losing Fleming was a missed opportunity. Not the end of the world but it's definitely a loss. I'm just calling it what it is. Now the staff has to work hard and land their next highest targets.

which speaks to my point not at all

Will be interesting how it all plays out. By his own logic, it seems Fleming is expecting to play and not be redshirted, otherwise he will transfer.

The other aspect is that he just didn't seem to have time to bond with Parker. He is right about the instability at WR coach, even though Gattis had been with Franklin for many years. I guess it is how you look at it..
