'cause he goes East and West.

A running game will save Carson Wentz, because he certainly won’t save himself. The Eagles’ 172 rushing yards in two games as a team ranks behind the totals of five individual running backs, and is exactly as many as the Vikings had against the Falcons in the opener. You can survive without a strong running game, but you cannot thrive, and thriving is not on the horizon. The way Miles Sanders runs east-west, he should be called The Turnpike. Veteran Jordan Howard needs a big hole, a tired defense, or both. Darren Sproles somehow got no carries.

They did not notice this in pre-season games and practices? The birds seemed high on Sanders all pre-season. What the hell were they looking at?

As far as I know, the Eagles are still very high on Sanders. The quote appears to be some kind of fan take, but OP didn’t give any kind of source or link. Sanders is still the best running back on the roster - as he continues to take a larger share of the carries, I think you’ll see his efficiency rise just like we saw here. I thought he did a nice job of putting his head down and getting a few yards when needed on Sunday night.

Typical of Philly media. Sum up a guy’s whole career based on 2 games. The biggest complainers, Reuben “350” Frank, and the “Hall of Famer” Ray “legal pad” Didinger.

I was apprehensive of the pick. I’m happy to see a PSU player get drafted in the early rounds, but I’m not sure the Eagles properly evaluated Sanders.

Then that’s the Eagles’ problem. I’ve seen this many times with media in Philly. They script a narrative, blame one guy for a team’s ills, then mock him until he’s gone.
Can Miles be better? Absolutely. Should he be written off after two games? No.

So ONE sportswriter criticizes Sanders after 2 games and somehow he represents all of Philadelphia?? OP has too much time on hands.

It starts there. It will snowball on 94.1WYSP Sports radio and on The Fanatic 97.5. It will become relentless. I’ve listened to Philly Sports talk going way back to Don Henderson on WCAU AM. It has devolved into a very mean spirited genre.

Sneaky headline on this thread. My initial, hopeful impression was that Miles was traveling west on the Turnpike after being traded to the Steelers!

Imo, Marcus Hayes is the ultimate Negadelphian. Seldom has much nice to say about anyone.
and you are probably right about that. That said, I did think MS was trying to hit the big one. I think he would do better with a one cut approach, because I dont want him to get cut!

Stop listening to this crap then. I went cold turkey with WIP about 5 years ago. Had enough of "Angelo" rip PSU & Joe when he had no idea of the facts. Haven't missed it at all.

Always thought Miles was trying to be Barkley too much last year with all the trying to get outside when he’s better as a straight-ahead runner. Seems the Eagles were only running him on off-tackle plays and that’s not his strength. All you’re getting out of Howard is 4 yds and a cloud of dust. He’s not a good wide runner at all. So now you have 2 backs who are virtually the same except one has about 20 extra pounds.

I wish Sanders well but this has been my take all along. He stops in the backfield vs finding the hole.

There was an article from maybe his HS coach that discussed a nickname for sanders regarding happy feet.

I hope the Eagles teach him to hit the hole so his athleticism can take him high.

Sanders is a very good back. He does have a problem trying to bounce things outside. He CAN do it just not like the guy he watched do it over and over in Saquon. He had the same issue at PSU and Franklin had to curtail it and convince him to run between the tackles more and hit those holes, however small they may be.

If he does that in Philly he'll be fine.

Let's review the last week.

PSU's performance through 3 games is of no concern whatsoever.
Miles Sanders' first two games as a rookie in the NFL spell the demise of his career.

Got it.

Please also remember that gender is a 'spectrum," it's sexist to think that biological males shouldn't compete in girls' sports, and PSU has a culture problem. Welcome to Bizarro-world sports fans.

My guess it is the offensive play calling because it seems they lost their analytics staff just prior to the start of the season and are somewhat lost when it comes to that.

I think it had more to do with losing their 2nd TE during warm ups then losing analytics staff. The game plan according to the paper had to be adjusted on the fly.

FWIW, Mike Quick was pointing out during the radio broadcast that Sanders needs to run more north/south and less east/west. My first thought was that’s nothing new, he had a tendency to do that at PSU as well.

@sluggo72 -- the paragraph you quoted was written by Marcus Hayes. He's a columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer. I stated before on this board that Hayes occasionally has an interesting column, but for the most part he overreacts to things, and that I don't place a lot of stock on what he writes. So, consider the source.

FWIW, I thought you'd take more of an interest in what Hayes said in the same column; two paragraphs below what you quoted:

"... A running game protects the quarterback, but you've got to block to run. Left guard Isaac Seumalo's game brought back memories of King Dunlap."

Miles may have needed more preseason carries as a rookie. Lets see how he does this week.

Typical Philly. Based on preseason practice and limited action they put him on a pedestal and call him the steal of the draft. And then when he plays like a rookie they tear him down. Coach said he's missed a couple of reads and missed holes -- that is typical and it will improve as Miles gets experience.

We know Miles. He's a very good football player but he's no Barkley. He's got the same problem as 90% of NFL backs - he can't get yards by himself, he needs a hole.

My take as a civilian/non coaching native of Philadelphia area:

1) I believe Miles did try to run N/S more than Barkley at PSU and succeeded for the most part.

2) Last thing any athlete - let alone rookie - should worry about is what Philly media thinks! He listens to his coaches he’ll do fine. I think Duce Staley and Doug Petersen know a lot more!

This may be true, but you can't ignore the fact Sanders has looked bad.. Bad for him the NFL and especially a team like the Eagles who have title hopes, they aren't going to groom him.

They are absolutely going keep grooming him! No organization with common sense (not to mention analytics!) gives up on the investment they made is Miles after one week. Trust Duce >> Marquis!

The Eagles rum game was awesome in 2017. Both Ajayi and Blount ran north-south and flourished. Miles needs to do the same.
