Fitzgerald

I didn't catch the actual shake, but I did notice them walking away from each other. I assume they shook.

Did I miss something - why wouldn't they have had a hand shake after the game? Frankly I thought Fitzgerald was too nice with his linebacker who clearly made serious helmet to helmet contact with McSorley. That was a dangerous play and he had plenty of time to pull up.

Lost all respect for Fitzgerald when he was laughing with his player after the hit on McSorley.

It was surprising. Understandable that he would support his player. It was a blatant cheap shot though - and stupid too.

Some of you are really sensitive and emotional. Fitz is a great coach and a great person. I wish more coaches were like him.
Not emotional at all. It looked bad. He could still be all of those things you say. I don't know him personally. I can't say whether or not he is a great person. That would be emotional.

Well, he was one of Patern's choices for his replacement. Along with Urban, Mike Riley and I can't remember the fourth.

I thought he pulled some kind of dbag move at PSU a few years ago when he taunted the fans behind the NW bench when they scored but we went on to win.
That IS correct. He IS a jerk. I bought into the "class act" bull until then. Today laughing and hugging the player who took the cheap shot on McSorley just confirmed it. Congratulating a player who is getting kicked out of the game tells me he approves of it. He's a jerk.

What made you think he congratulated him? How do you know what he said to him? Maybe he was telling him that he can't let his enthusiasm and emotions get away from him and that he must learn to control himself in the future.

First target Looked like Fits. Was congratulating the player, laughing and hugging him. Second target was just plain bad. If you think he is a great coach, so be it. I have a different opinion

I try to be objective when I watch these games. I believe the officials called the play in question correctly according to the rules of the game, but I do not for a second believe it was a cheap shot nor do I believe there was intent to cause an injury, as I've seen posted in one of today's threads.
It was two kids playing hard. The young linebacker was a tad late getting to the throwing QB. He got his head in the wrong position and paid the price for it. But he did not wrap up and drive McSorley into the ground. Just because the rules call it "targeting" doesn't mean he did it with intent. Nobody will ever convince me it was a dirty play.
Fitz played linebacker and was probably in a similar situation a dozen times in his career. If the kid comes off the field and says "Sorry coach, I didn't mean to hit him like that," what is Fitz supposed to do?
My guess, and it is only a guess, is Fitz was telling him he understood what happened and to learn from it. The young man had played an exceptional game up to that point, then suddenly had to leave the field.
I've never understood how so many who post here look for the smallest things to beech and whine about during every game. If it is not the officials, it is the announcers or a three-second view of the opposing coach which allows them to jump to some wild conclusion. Or the PSU coaching staff while the team is rolling up 30+ points and pitching a shutout for 55+ minutes.

yeah I think the second targeting was much cheaper than the first one...that kid launched himself at a player who was already down and then rolled over with his hands up and the "who me?" face

This is exactly spot on. According to the rules, it was targeting, but I did not believe there was malicious intent at all.
Fitzgerald was trying to teach the kid and he empathized with him because he's a former LB and knows how tough it can be.
People really need to relax around here and enjoy the ride.
WE ARE!!!

Fitz is a class guy. I didn't see him supporting his player, I saw him coaching him. It was a teaching moment.
Fitz was calm the entire game. I believe he knew that he was in a catch 22, with stopping #26 & giving up the pass. Does anyone think he is thrilled losing his two very good players for the first half of next weeks game.

Fitz was a very tough LB in college and I would imagine those extreme instincts come to the surface on occasion.

One of the previous posters mentioned an altercation a few years ago. Something between him and O'B, it was classless and I lost much respect at that time. Maybe some can elaborate on the incident.

All I heard before the game was how Franklin could not beat Fitzgerald. Not any more. Scoreboard. The rest is irrelevant.

What game were you watching? He was not calm the entire game. He was going full Narduzzi a few times in the first half. I thought he was acting like a douche on the sidelines.

He was Narduzzi in Q1, at least, on the face mask call and another call. Very unlike him. He knew he was up against it today.

OK but it sure didn't look that way to me.

Fitz made Narduzzi look like Perry Como.
Maybe I only see the good in persons and missed some failing composure moments.

I'm so sorry for taking positive human nature position. I must have been too calm during the game.

Well said. Not enough people today take that position, and this world would be better if more did. It may seem like an excuse, but I was simply looking to make a Perry Como joke. After all, he was "Mr Relaxation".

OK I'll give you a WVU fan's opinion of Fitzgerald.I watch more college football than 90% of the people on here because I have no life!I've said for two years that Northwestern has the dirtiest players in the Big 10.If you think Fitzgerald is a choir boy we have very different opinions of him.And you are right WVU's coaches aren't choir boys either.I said it before someone else does.

I think he told the kid the refs made a bad call. He was telling him life isn't fair.
He was consoling him.
