Fleming not too kind to PSU

So he doesn't like the fact an injured guy didn't get a ton of playing time? And he likes the stability of OSU where they have a new head coach? Weird. Someone should tell him every coaching staff has personnel changes. Will he want to transfer the next time an OSU assistant moves on or he feels like he isn't playing enough? If he gets injured, will he be happy if the coaches rush him back onto the field if he isn't ready? Recruiting being what it is, I'm sure the opposing coaches hammered the "unstable coaching staff" and "Shorter got the shaft" narratives into his head.

That’s when he took a closer look at what playing for Penn State might entail.

“For a long time I told everybody that I was going to go there,” Fleming said. “It was hard. I had to crunch some stuff down. They weren’t stable on offense, defense; they weren’t pulling out games, their coaching has been unstable for the past couple years. A lot of stuff weighed into it.”

I’m thinking instead that he didn’t want to compete for playing time as it wasn’t guaranteed and that de doesn’t want to run into his ex-girlfriend. I hate to say it about a kid, albeit he’s pretty much an adult, but with these remarks he sounds like a tool.

I completely agree. He had an easier path to play at OSU and lower academic expectations. I doubt he'd fit in Penn State. We'll see how smart his decision is in 3 years when he declares.

Ditto... the world turned after his breakup. Crazy stuff. Good luck in Columbus. Hope he kills it on every Saturday but one per year. He’s putting a lot of faith in a new coach and a diva QB...

Everything I have heard indicated that this young man was "raised right" and had a good support system with Mom and Grandpa Mick. I believe that to be true. However, he'd have been better served not to expound on the "reasons" for his decision.
His choice to commit to an out of state conference/ division opponent has perhaps given him some tastes of the kind of reactions/ adversity that he has not encountered in a career where he is blessed with so much more God given talent than virtually everyone else he competes against. The hometown hero suddenly has been spurned by many.
I'm in no way condoning the reaction of some rabid and misguided PSU Fans. But frankly, someone around him should have prepared him for the inevitable.
He, in my opinion, should have left his courtship with PSU in the past and his "opinions" to himself. Nothing good will result from his comments......which frankly are IMO pretty flawed.

He bought into some lines from some other coaches. He’ll of the same again in the fall when OSU isn’t what they were under Meyer. He’s old enough to know better than that, but what can you do?
I think it is more that the rubber band of adulation, made the inevitable smack back into his face (reaction to his decision) and he thought he needed to justify it. Big mistake, IMO. He is entitled to do as he wishes and he just dug himself a deeper hole in his home state.

O$U negatively recruits and the kid bought it. It’s no more complicated than that. It’s barely worth our time to discuss anymore. If the kid is too dumb to figure out Shorter was injured last year than he wasn’t coming to PSU and making it.

And OSU's coaching has been stable? OSU had its worst defense in a long time last year, too.

It is amazing kids compare results between OSU and PSU as apples to apples. OSU has been recruiting at a higher level than PSU forever and barely beating them in come from behind victories. The kid had a chance to be the difference but wants to be a follower instead of a leader

I almost feel bad for Fleming now. At some point he and his family are going to realize that his new coach duped him. The thoughts they put in his head are barely coherent.

Coaching instability? Hello, Meyer retired in the wake of the Zack Smith firing. Who is Zack Smith and what went on there? Might want to educate yourself kid. Day has already been called out by another 5 star recruit for lying to him and he hasn't even coached a season yet. Ohio St's last two head coaches were forced to move on mired in scandal.

Meanwhile, Penn St has had what 4 head coaches for the better part of a century. Clemson has also had a very stable coaching staff.

Freshman impact? PSU's top 2 leading receivers were freshmen. A third took over a starting WR role part way through the year. A fourth owns the school record for longest receiving TD while PRESERVING his redshirt. Another freshmen lead the team in tackles. Clemson also had a super freshman impact.

Meanwhile the greatest freshman receiving impact on the Buckeyes was their 9th leading receiver.

Julian, at the very least, you know now that your new coaches think they can sell you absolutely anything and that for now it appears you and your family will buy it no matter how patently false it may be.

I think he just got a lesson in how the media will take little, fairly innocuous comments and use them out of context. I mean they throw the coaching instability comment out there by itself (as I can assume he was talking about the WR coach, which is true) and then they point out that Hartline has been at OSU since since 2017, as if that is some sort of stability. While I agree that the article is not a great look for the young man, getting worked up over it is a little overboard. And it was written to be inflammatory and generate clicks and comments.

There is also a good chance Shorter was frustrated with his injury, recovery, and playing time, and voiced his thoughts to Fleming. It must have been hard for Shorter. One minute he is a five star cock of the walk WR, next minute he is injured and at the bottom of the depth chart.

Its time to move on from Fleming. He has shared some thoughts on his decision, but I dont think we will ever know the real reasons why he chose OSU. Its the young man's choice. Wish him the best, but time to focus on PSU's talented WRs and recruits.

Regarding Hartline, he is a very talented coach with a great resume. Heck, he could easily be an NFL coach next year. It will be interesting to see if he wants to remain in college coaching.

The article is pretty accurate, he did not feel comfortable at PSU after all the coaching (wr)changes, if Gattis was still at PSU I bet he would have been a Nittany Lion.

Having gone through the recruiting process for another sport with both of my sons, the first lesson learned is to commit to a SCHOOL where you want to be, not to a coach because chances are the coach won’t be there by the end of your career.

Hope his ex starts dating Shorter..LOL.

Actually hope his -ex becomes Fleming’s -ex
-ex, that they passionately reunite and he thinks about her day and night, night and day, can’t get her out of his mind.

Let’s see how much he loves Columbus then!

Ohio State recruited 2 WRs the past two years who were top 50 nationally: Blue Smith and Trevon Grimes. They combined for 3 catches and 20 yards. Both have left the program, with Grimes ripping OSU for its treatment of him. But yeah, Shorter got hurt, so Penn State doesn’t develop WRs. These comments are either dishonest, or Mr. Fleming is ignorant of any facts.

I will probably get killed for this, but I don't think Fleming's position is unfair or ridiculous. We want to know why he did not pick penn state, then we kill him for his honesty. Look, offensively, it has been a bit of a powder keg. Donnovan was nightmare, followed by lightning in a bottle in JOMoe, followed bu underwhelming impressions by Rahne thus-far? The receivers have basically regressed since the Hamilton/Godwin days. We lose Gattis, we hire corley(a RB coach), fire and replace him. Other school's go through constant changes on coaching staffs, but we did not really prove we could handle it last year. We have also lost some key recruiting people during Flemming's recruitment, Justin King being one of them. Franklin deserves much adulation for great hires(JoeMo) and deserves some blame for the bad hires too.
Is it unfair to say that the team has failed to pull out some games they should have won? I guess you could also say that about a lot of schools, but honestly, Clemson/OSU are not some of them. Both teams have finished on high notes, and we sort finished on a bad one last year. We have had a tough time pulling out games late and the annual loss to MSU and last years spanking to Michigan(a team OSU wollaped) has to be a little off-putting to a kid like Fleming.
I think Franklin is the man long term and I am happy with the direction of the program, but we simply are not there, from a results/coaching standpoint, where we can overcome seasons that don't meet expectations and coaching turnover. It's no big deal, most programs can't either. Franklin said so himself, we are not elite yet. We don't have elite coaching, elite facilities, elite players(maybe now we do) yet, so the most elite WR in the country might not feel this is the best move for him. I get it, and I think its fair. In a couple years, I expect that to change.

Their coaching staff wasn’t stable, so he goes to a school that has a legendary head coach step down and replaces it with a first year HC with no FBS ahead coach experience. Also has had numerous coaching turnover on the offensive side of the ball the past few years and under an ugly cultural scandal/lawsuit that is being buried by the university and fanbase as not a big deal. Oh and Penn State lost some close, one point games to OSU the last two years after beating them in a close game the year before. Wow.

Lots of fabricated rationalization IMO, instead of just saying he didn’t want to go to PSU and prefers to go out of state to Columbus Ohio and OSU. Perhaps he bought off some nice sound bites from his brand new coaching staff ?

If he doe$n't like tO$U, he can ju$t tran$fer next year and $tart immediately at another $chool. The NCAA doesn't want a $uper$tar$ $itting out a year. It hurt$ their bottom line. $$$$$$$$$$$$$

Doesn't effect the NCAA's bottom line one iota.

He’s young. That explains it.

Have you ever heard a young person explain a decision that you might think is stupid? It’s not rational .
I have a 26 yo kid separated from her husband and her thought process on how she’s handling often sounds retarded. And she’s 26.
This is probably his biggest life decision and if he chooses a school we don’t like ( not our school) , the reasons will sound stupid, forced, not makes sense and so on.
And people often make wrong decisions and justify them later. Why did you buy that car, it’s known to be unreliable?
Well reasons ..... and they all sound stupid.

Would like to second this. I work with a lot of millennials. Many of the things they believe are insane and when you question them they can’t explain really anything regarding their thought process. They want to be “mentored”, which essentially means they want to have their hand held. I would assume Fleming wants a coach to be his buddy and Hartline fit the bill.

Believe we're seeing someone who isn't particularly articulate or mature attempting to summarize a situation that has too many working parts to describe in words.Boiling it down, if a football prospect, particularly one on offense, has the choice between two products on the field, OSU or PSU, which does he choose? Pretty simple.
