I'll bail out Jamz here because I saw the original Flo piece, where the 2001 Gophers were "runner-ups" in the sense that they didn't get on the list at all, only mentioned below it. Then Flo rewrote and put Minnesota on the list.

If a healthy Suriano equaled six NCAA champs, then I agree.
But wrestlers are humans and not machines, and so the emotions would have been different had Suriano been healthy, and so who knows whether even the 5 champs would also have been champs had they had Suriano.
Varner is on the coaching staff. And Nevills made the podium before Cael hired Varner.

Without Joe Kapp, it would be been 3 (although to be technical, that one was the year before the merger, so it was an NFL title). So 3 NFC titles.

Ironically I saw a guy in the grocery store today and he looked like a wrestler so I asked him if he was a mma or wrestler. He said wrestler and he wrestled at Buffalo. I asked him if he knew Mark and he said he was a senior and Mark was a freshman on the team. He said in a complementary way that Mark was a beast on the mat.
