For a clearer knowledge of Penn State wrestling, read this. Right now.

Wonder how the new rules changes will affect Cael's reign.

The new changes will actually help the Penn State style of wrestling, more than it will hurt it. The rule change involving takedowns and control from neutral on 90 degree back tilts, would give Jason Nolf, for example, an extra 6 to 8 points in any given match. He doesn't actually need those points, but now, he gets those points also, haha.

The headgear rule was a reactionary flare to the Mark Hall vs Zahid Valencia match. I don't know if that rule will actually make it through, I doubt it. The independent review official is another reaction, clearly to the Mark Hall vs Bo Jordan match, as well as the Bo Nickal vs Gabe Dean match. That one will make it through, I don't have a problem with it. The main thing, is the new takedown rule from scrambles, that no longer allows a wrestler to throw himself to his back and maintain control.

It's already known as "the Dean Heil rule". Heil himself, is a really well spoken kid who actually agrees with the rule.

This says everything that needs to be said about what has happened to the sport of collegiate wrestling today.

Good article but I would contend that Cael is the greatest wrestler, as would many. A few years ago we attended the PSU OSU meet at OSU in St Johns arena. Before the match, Cael was sitting in the team seats as his team was warming up. Kids began to line up for an autograph. At one point there were maybe 30 kids in line. The funny thing was Tom Ryan the OSU coach sat across the mat, in his arena, and no one came up to him.

We are very lucky to have Cael.

Any chance they will change the number of scholarships? Most sports allow multiple scholarships per position. Football allows 85 for about 25 positions. Basketball has, I think, 12 for 5 starters. But wrestling has only 10 for 10 weight classes. Seems like 20 scholarships would be more appropriate.

No, most sports don't give multiple scholarships per position.
Football, Basketball. Hockey.
Many wrestling teams don't even give out the full 9.9.
Not going to change anytime soon.

As the earlier poster said, no chance. Title 9 requires a balance in scholarships between men and women so wrestling pays the price with limited scholarships.
