Where and who did he wrestle?
I agree. For someone who spent the last 2 years focusing solely on Greco I am not all that surprised by the results nor I am I discouraged by them. He will get better as the talent is there. Might be able to slide into 174 for a year depending on other possible recruits. My thought was that he was still wrestling greco matches, mainly looking upper body. Which is understandable given what he's done in the last year but it doesn't look like he's ready to beat top tier folkstyle guys until he rounds things out. Didn't think it was the cut because he wrestled the same weight he wrestled at worlds. Maybe it was just a bad day for him though. Want to see him get out and wrestle more.
I would add that Viruet is also a tough kid who has had some inconsistent but promising results his first couple of years but I would think that he should qualify this year. He's also a pretty defensive wrestler.Way too early to tell. On top of the usual freshman struggles with moving into college wrestling (better competition, experience, strength, getting off bottom, etc.).
The 3 TFs/pins against lesser opponents are a good sign.
The 4-0 loss to Viruet: would like to see him do better than that, at least get off bottom and get into a higher scoring match. Viruet is a 2-yr starter who has yet to qualify for nationals.
The 6-0 loss to Chavez: let's wait and see how that looks later this year. Chavez was also a high-end recruit and beat DePrez and Bethea already this year. Would still like to have seen Manville score and get off bottom, but this one might not look as bad in time.
Is this his red shirt season? I believe red shirts are not allowed at the scuffle.
I don't think Cutch gets the credit he deserves for his career to date. Sure, he's fallen just short of AA, but he's had a ton of good wins in his career. He took Moore down twice in last year's dual. He's beaten Brooks, Dudley, Miklus, Weigel among others. I'm also optimistic about Manville as well. Agree that he may not be a scoring whirlwind like some of our guys, but he'll be a good contributor. It feels like Manville will be much like Cutch. Maybe he will accomplish more (AA). But, I see a guy that will not score much against higher level competition, super sound defensively, will always be in the right position, and will win low scoring affairs against comparable low AAs. He has a boatload of wrestling miles on him and has never in the past demonstrated super offensive creativity like some of the high level recruits the past few years.
Here's a team for him:http://www.mn-storm.org/index.htmlManville has wrestled all styles while training for Greco competitions, but yes, mostly a Greco focus.
I love him at PSU. I want him to forge that into the NLWC making a Greco push. I think he will be productive in the lineup in the future. I truly wish him the best. However, the Greco guy in me wishes he'd just focus on Greco because we need more of that in the US.
