Former PSU Walk-on QB Sean Sellinger fatally stabbed in Philly

holy shit ... i didnt know Sean but I know his business partner pretty well. our kids wrestle together

I knew Sean from the age of 13. His mom worked for me for 5 years in the nineties.

Sean was also an outstanding wrestling. He won over 100 matches in high school.

He went to Great Valley High School before transferring to Coatesville his senior year to join his dad who was an administrator at the high school at the time. At the time, Great Valley protested his transfer and the PIAA ruled in favor of Great Valley. The Great Valley Superintendent intervened and agreed to the transfer.

Rich Como of Coatesville and Fran Ganter we’re friends. Como convinced Ganter to take Sean as a walk-on.

Joe told me one night that Sean was a gamer.

Sean ran into some off field problems and ultimately withdrew from school before later returning to get his degree.

He was a fine young man. So sad.

Very tragic. My deepest condolences to Sean's friends and his family.

Life is a really strange journey. You never know when an action, whether intended or inadvertent, ends one's life.

There are some really messed-up people out there who seemingly have little value for the lives of others.

RIP Sean.

This doesn't seem like a "road rage" incident, at least not of the typical kind where someone doesn't like the way someone else is driving. The assailant was on a bike and there was obviously a vehicle stopped and blocking the way. As more details become available, I'm guessing that we'll find out that Sean walked in on a drug deal of some kind, between someone stopped in the vehicle and the man on the bike, who left his "delivery bag."

Doesn't look that way as of now:

So were the other articles inaccurate? If White was on a bicycle, why get into an argument over stopped auto traffic, and why carry a "Rambo Knife?" Further, why stab someone in the back unless they were witness to something? Perhaps a racial slur was uttered. Glad I don't live in or near a big city.

A knife to a drug deal? Not the weapon of choice

What a heroic statement.
Ever talk to a minority person?

The guy’s last name is White. He made no racial comment . However Michael White is black.
I’ll add I commonly carry a pocket knife, many people do . It’s strange among knife fans to see someone carry a large knife that way. It’s more of a camp knife thing or combat thing like the kabar.

Says who? If it was a drug deal or not the weapon was obviously effective .
Either way, road rage, drug deal, or anything else it still is a tragedy .

According to the report and article, the man who did the stabbing was a college student home for the summer delivering food on his bike. His life is ruined.

If you google knife law in Pa. you’ll see large knives are legal , but the police can get you on “ common lawful purpose “. This can be pretty arbitrary.

What does 'common lawful purpose' mean?

While the state's knife laws are easy to understand, there is one area that is up for debate. That is the part of the law referring to "common lawful purpose."

Pennsylvania law says that the knife must serve a "common lawful purpose." The phrase has been debated and refined thanks to court cases.

In 1975, the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania took up the issue of "common lawful purpose" after David Gatto was arrested for having a 30-inch knife in downtown Scranton.

The court ruled in Commonwealth v. Gatto. that the knife was an implement for the infliction of bodily injury and served no common lawful purpose.

Judge William Cercone said in his opinion that: "Had appellant been on a journey through the tropical rain forests of South America, attempting to travel by foot from Bogota, Colombia to Caracas, Venezuela, it could then be reasonably concluded that a thirty-inch knife had a common lawful purpose; but, appellant was in a high crime urban area of Scranton, Pa. at 3:30 in the morning."

That’s the story . There could be more as speculated . It could be something as simple as an argument or other stuff as alleged .
Either way the kid over reacted and murdered someone for no good reason.

people are nuts today and I have no idea what happened here but I have seen some really crazy stuff by drivers and pedestrians alike. I have been passed by people that thought I was going too slow (I wasn't) and they brake checked me - WTF? I have seen pedestrians walk into the road to cross the street without ever looking in any direction and I have to slam on my brakes and I get the finger? - again WTF? I will say working downtown I don't really like being there later at night - even Rittenhouse Square in the day has numerous homeless that are less than sane and you really need to be careful about your surroundings.

My condolences to the Sellinger family.

Considering the articles I've read this is a senseless murder.
No reason for it.
I’ll caution people to not escalate a traffic situation, even if you’re believe you’re right . Best to stay in your car.

Not piling on Sean, but I have to strongly agree with this. Given how crazy people get on the road and how many people are packing heat these days, I would never ever get out of my car in the event of a dispute. Not worth it.

So many questions. You can almost always get through traffic on a bike. How does the apparent assailant get caught up in this in the first place? I've got to believe there were a few surveillance cameras in the area. The truth will come out.

It's risky. I recommend two books by Marc Macyoung about self defense:
Amazon product ASIN B07D8GBWF3
Amazon product ASIN B00LIBWADA
A case like this isn't strictly self defense, but good self defense training prepares you to avoid certain situations. it never hurts to learn more.

For multiple reasons I'd say it's better to carry a gun than a knife for self defense. Mainly because it seems easier to articulate why you shot someone than stabbing someone. you really need to be able to explain the why it's self defense.

Stabbings seem to be more upsetting to cops, prosecutors, and juries. it's up close and personal and unless you're 100% right, it looks bad. Even then it often appears to look worse than a shooting.

This in no way, shape, or form is self defense. even if he tries an angle such as a racial insult was yelled at him by the deceased, the man was walking away and was not a threat.

I don't know how much time this kid will get but this is how it went down per an eye witness: The three guys had just left Rouge restaurant and were intoxicated. One of the members of their dinner party at Rouge was former weatherman John Bolaris. (Imagine how big this story would be if Bolaris had been in the car.)

Driving away, their car was blocked on the west side of the square. They get out and start beer muscling the driver of the double parked car; being bullies. Kid (White) rolls up to the scene on his way to making a food delivery and tried to interject and tell them all to settle down, that it doesn't have to be like this. They turn on the bike delivery dude with a "mind your own f-ing business ninja" type of attitude. White is telling family and church members that Schellenger spat at/on him but only the guys from the car would be close enough to verify this. The witness from a distance could not see spit in the dark. White and Schellenger, started fighting. Schellenger, a former school wrestler, and was getting the better of White. White panicked, broke free long enough and pulled knife from bag. Stabbed Schellenger (guy #1) and ran. Driver (guy # 2) stays near scene. Guy # 3 from the car panicked and ran in a different direction.

If you have hung around Rittenhouse Square you know how personable and chatty the doormen are. There are doormen all around the square and they will talk to anybody who will listen and this is the story one of them will tell in court as an eye witness. There will surely be footage as well, it's Rittenhouse Square for crying out loud. How would this testimony affect White's sentence, who knows?

Beer muscles and testosterone. Nothing to do with illegal drugs.

Sounds plausible to me.

It really won’t help him much , maybe manslaughter instead of murder. The big thing with any self defense case is knowing when you can act and when you can’t.

Yes, and if what we're reading here is the true story then the kid ruined his life trying to be the good guy.
Or not knowing what not my circus, not my monkeys means . Sticking your nose in something like this is often unproductive and can be dangerous.
Call the cops.

Man that is incredible detailed for someone not a party to the altercation- I am not saying it didn’t go down this way but it seems like it may be Whites side of the story - if not where do you get “he panicked” from? - a witness would not know that. Does sound like something that never needed to happen in the first place and lives and families are athletes forever in the worst way on all sides.

Sounds like a pretty good Made up story by someone who stabbed a stranger in the back with an eight inch knife, I guess he told all the "church members" that anyways. Think I will wait for the trial. Good times eh?

It’s most likely the defense narrative . The he panicked thing could easily be he was mad and over reacted .
