Franklin says that they have packages for Grunkenmeyer to get him in the game vs Boise.

I'd prefer him to get meaningful snaps (i.e., not just handing the ball off to a RB who is going to get tuned) in the 4th quarter of a game in hand. There is nothing wrong with backups getting their chance to shine, even if the game is a blowout. I hate it when RBs are basically being sent into a lion's den of pissed off defenders.

I cant believe he didnt say they have an open competition between Allar and Grunk. The big package is him handing off to Allen. What is he going to do.... waste one of his 65 plays. Like BSU is going to be worried about the Grunk package.

His press conferences are such bs. He says nothing. Complete waste of time. The press does not nut up and ask a hard question because he will pout like a little bitch.

Pouting like you are?

No...he absolutely doesn't
Why do people act as though the backup QB taking meaningful snaps in games is something that does or should happen?
Nothing he can do now is prepping him if Allar is injured.
Disagree. Any live game experience is better than zero game experience.

Your starter is always one play away from nnot being able to play. Please, Please PLEASE we don’t want repeats of Iowa.

What are a handful of snaps going to do?
I understand the concern about Drew going down but if he does....we're not likely winning a title. That was true with Beau as well. Georgia has a huge uphill battle but sometimes kids come in without real experience and it relaxes them because there's no expectations.

Many here have been against having 2 QBs on the field for any play all year. It's even more true now. We don't need gimmicks to beat Boise. Play straight up. Let the best team win.

A handfuls of snaps are going to be 1000% better than tossing him in there cold with zero.

Like you, I was never a fan of bring Beau in for a second down play in which he’d run the ball. And then he’s out. That disrupts momentum. Maybe Franklin lets Grunk play a full series. Maybe not. Game circumstances will dictate what can be done. But Franklin damn well better be preparing a backup QB.

If Allar has an injury, our best bet is some form of Warren, singleton, and Allen running the wildcat. 5 extra snaps for the backup isn’t going to do anything for us this year.

You can't bench your starting QB for a series in a playoff game--absolutely not. If we're up 42 then let him play.
The backup needs to be prepared in practice--like at every other program.
The reality is--if you lose your starting QB at this point of the season you're in a lot of trouble.

He did and that's fine
You play the backup QB--ever--unless it's a blowout
This whole Beau things was beyond stupid.
Drew is your QB--if he goes down we're done--we all know it
You play him and you win with your best
Grunk is the future--always was
Losing Beau is 100% fine--good luck to Mizzou

I think we need to just stick with Allar and only allow the backup in if we are up by at least three touchdowns.

Hmmm. Let’s see. Saban went from Hurts To Tagavailoa at halftime in the NC game. It worked out for him.

I’m not sure what you’re even debating. I supplied a fact and you seem dumbfounded by it.

We both have opinions. Yours is not more correct than mine. And mine is not more correct than yours. Still, you’ll debate that yours is fact and mine is not. SOP.
So, you'd like to play Grunk and have Allar transfer like Hurts when he went to Tua?
You want Grunk to play a series in a playoff game because...he needs snaps in case Drew gets hurt...yeah...how many coaches are you betting do that? Any?
That's not what Saban did as you likely know.

Well….Grunk has like 11 snaps 2 throws and an INT.

Tua played in 8 games and over 50 attempts and 8 TD’s before being inserted in the game against GA.

I miss the comparison too. I don’t know how inserting him in a playoff game gives us the best chance to win. It’s not Kent State. It’s a playoff game. He isn’t going to suddenly be good if Allar goes down because he played 5 downs.

Get ahead by 28 and put him in.

There is nothing wrong with having an offensive package prepared for Grunk that he is familiar and comfortable with.

If/when/how this package will be deployed is to be determined

It will most likely be deployed on fourth and one at their own 13 yard line. The ball will be turned over, but Penn State still wins the game and all is forgiven lol,

Coach leaves me scratching my head often enough during our games with his actual decisions. I'm trying to curtail my own speculative complaining.

I'm certainly not going to criticize coach Franklin for having Grunk prepared just in case.

I personally don't see the point in taking Allar off the field for Grunk. They are the same style of QB. At least with Beau, you had a heavy running threat who could throw a good ball. It was something different to prepare for.

What is Grunk going to do differently? Throw the quick slant?

Yes, you want reps for your backup, but the playoff isn't the place for it. I wonder if this is a concession to keep Grunk from transferring or gamesmanship with Boise. It doesn't make sense, to me, unless it's the 4th quarter or we lead by 20+.

i agree, you can have a package, but, you don't have to use it

Put me down as being fine with this.
- It’s good to have a backup with in-game experience (not just garbage time).

- I think Franklin (and Kotelnicki?) likes to have the threat of a running QB, even if it’s to give the opposing DC something to think about. They don’t want to risk an injury to Allar, obviously.

- Folks say if Allar goes down, we’re f-ed. Probably so, but it’s not unheard of for a QB to be knocked out for a series or two. So you want a backup who’s seen real game action ready for that moment.

- Who knows, the pick Grunk threw vs SMU could make him better going forward. (This isn’t practice at 80% speed and I need to take care of the ball.) People learn by making mistakes.

- Franklin may feel confident about the game tomorrow and may only use the Grunk package if things are going well.

- I’m not sold on the idea that a starter playing well is suddenly going to go cold if he doesn’t take a few snaps here or there.

How many teams in this playoff will give their backup meaningful snaps? Just us...

The reality is unless Tim Tebow is your backup you play the starter every single snap. A handful of snaps a game won't matter. Grunk is either ready or he isn't if Drew goes down.

This is painfully stupid. You ALWAYS want to give your backup meaningful snaps, because you never know when the WHOLE SHOW will depend on him.

I don't see "special packages" as being beneficial to the team's chances of winning this game. It's just more plays to try and execute at a high level and if Allar goes out the best chance for success would seem to be having the rest of the offense execute the core plays that they are best at executing which would seem to put the least pressure on Grunk. Does Grunk have some special skill that would make it worth interrupting the continuity of the offense to take advantage of by trying to run plays that otherwise won't be run? I find that hard to believe.........

Don't understand why Franklin would use the 2nd string QB with the game on the line. And if PSU gets up big it would seem beneficial for the next game to give Grunk snaps with the base/best plays of the offense, which he would be called on to run if Allar gets injured or otherwise can't play.
