In camp Coach Franklin told us the offense wouldn’t be as explosive. He sited the loss of Godwin as a major factor and the things he could do. Of course Johnson has done great but you can’t expext him to do what Godwin did last year, Godwin was super human at times. Johnson will get there, maybe even later this season. Maybe Johnson breaks out in a big way in a big game later this month.

However we were told by Franklin the offense may look a little different, more controlled and less reliance on the big plays in the passing game. The loss of Wright to injury and Nelson not being ready haven’t helped but I think we are basically seeing exactly what Franklin told us.

Until we are shut down and don’t adapt during a game to what the defense is doing I will be believing the offense is working the way Joe Moorhead wants to see it. Iowa gave us the run, Indiana gave us the pass. Both defenses did what they do best with the personel they have acquired to do it with. Iowa we shot ourselves in the foot until we needed to punch it in the endzone. When we needed in we got in. It isn’t an accident Indiana stopped the run and pressured McSorely, also stopping his running, it happened last year too.

I am not saying we are perfect. We are still improving, a work in progress but it will click and I think soon. Our offense is still pretty darn good eventhough a lot of people think we are treading water. Relax, the explosion is coming soon.

I think we've been very explosive . Especially on ST and D as well. On O, SB couldn't be any more explosive , not everybody is SB!

With explosive offense I am more referring to the fast scores, we seem to be grinding out longer drives this year. Maybe that isn’t true but just what I feel what I am watching.

For all the talk about Trace's stats being as good if not better than last year, the one stat that stands out is yard per reception. Now his number last year was crazy high, but yards per catch is off about 5 yards year on year. That's a lot and that shows impact of not having Godwin. For all the talk on 50-50 balls, that's what is somewhat missing. You don't see nearly the same amount of those throws this year over last year. Again, attributed to loss of Godwin.

We will soon see what this offense is. Rolling up Ga State, Akron, etc. is one thing, we will now see what the offense does against stiffer D's. Personally, I think they need the middle of the field. If D's are loading up, the middle by nature should be more exploitable.

It's about to show its hand.

I don't care what stats say all the time. The defense/ST have gotten us points to blow up the PPG number. On the same token, missed FGs have been points that should have counted. The defense creating turnovers and ST for that matter have also aided in ppg that an offense seems to take credit for though should not.

There are issues on O, maybe they can be fixed but will be tough to beat any team with a very good defense like Mich, OSU, Bama, or Clemson if we have the chance. This NW game should be very telling, they are horrific in the back of their secondary and have trouble getting to the qb. Deep shots are a must in this game.

Northwestern will load box like Indiana and McSorley should smoke the secondary if the line can hold their blocks. I don’t expect Barkley to have a big day rushing.

I'm going to need a link. I don't quite remember Franklin telling us any of this. Since it's so clear to you I'm sure you must have a link handy.
Thanks.

Franklin said this week that NW uses similar schemes to Iowa. Neither Iowa or Indiana didn’t anything crazy, just ran the defense they always run and always practice. They are solid not great but are well coached. NW also well coached and will do what they do best. I think Barkley has a big day like he did vs Iowa. You just worry about the team sleeping in a sleepy environment and getting behind.
