”I know how hard Ryan and the staff are trying to get the Elite kids in Iowa City. I know they are as frustrated as we are. It's not about tradition, who has the biggest crowds, the best fans it's about money. As long as we continue to follow the rules and others don't we will suffer for it.”

“Sad but true. Still confident, though, that we’ll reach the top of the mountain doing it the right way. Our guys refuse to compromise their principles, and I respect the heck out of that. We’ll get there, and it will be all the sweeter knowing we did it fair and square.”

When you have nothing else to blame it on then it must be money. Has to be. It can’t be anything else. Does that mean Alabama, O$U, Clemson, and USC do the same in football? No.

Get out and work harder or get people who will. Iowa has been slipping ever since Cael showed up in SC and Ryan showed up in Columbus. And Brands shows up in Iowa City. All of this happened around the same time. Hmmm. I wonder what happened. Don’t hear the folks from Stillwater or Ithaca complaining. They better watch out for Iowa State cause they will be a Hawkeye headache real soon.

Brands gave an interview where he talked about recruiting and mentioned them “doing things the right way, by the book” or something to that effect. The implication was pretty clear IMO. I guess when you get out-recruited, out-coached, and out-hustled it’s easier to sell your fan base on the idea that the other guys are cheating than admit it.

Penn State currently uses most of the old Dan Gable model, just applicable to today. The one exception is Penn State does not calculate available scholarship money by taking 9.9 scholarships times value of out-of-state scholarship and then disperse that money regardless of in state out of state status. Since that would be illegal that is the part of the Gable model Penn State does not use.

Brands is a good enough guy, but not the sharpest knife in the drawer. He reads HR and found a ready made excuse and jumped on it. The guys who are beating us are all cheaters is the official company line. The career of Tom Brands has gone from High school accused gang rapist to the Mother Theresa of wrestling. That is some serious reinventing so to speak. I'm glad PD3 is finally going to be with a group of people who share his same high moral fiber.

YES. Each of the schools you cited have at one time used improper financial inducements to obtain players.

Looks like Brands is taking some of the fans approach by rationalizing why they are not at the top anymore. Someone needs to refresh his recollection to the fact a school other then Penn State has finished ahead of Iowa every season for the past 7 years or that PSU starting winning championships prior to any big influx of money into the NLWC or a lineup of top recruits.

Maybe if they got off their asses and actually recruited World Champs like Aaron Brooks, they wouldn’t be in this predicament. Only a few have noted their frustration after Mr. Brooks confirmed that Iowa had not yet contacted them. Mind boggling that a stud in a need weight hadn’t even been contacted.

Someone then had the brilliant idea of having Nelson Brands room with Brooks at some camp. Yeah, that’s the ticket. Pair a kid who’s twitter feed is filled with effusive praise of Trump with an African American kid - they’ll bond instantaneously!!

I met the Brands and spent a day watching there practice last season. The vibe is world class. I just think they are in over their intellectual heads. The world has moved on. They will continue to be able to train athletes well. Spencer Lee will probably set all kinds of records but I think their time has past.

Re: biggest crowds. It seems clear from the raft of away crowd records we are breaking that PSU is a huge draw - with lines going out the door to get autographs. Too bad the BJC is not owned by PSU or we could use that for all Home meets and take the attendance crown.

That thread reminds me of Q Wright tweeting about hearing about athletes who have gotten money, etc - something you can glean daily from ESPN and such - this was taken by HR as an admission by Q that he and his teammates got money. Hilarious leap of logic

Someone had to say it re: Brands teenage escapades. Cael never got suspended in high school, that’s for sure

Yeah, yeah, the “girl was willing” - that’s what guys said in the 80s. Still enough to get a famous athlete in a small town suspended

Not sure why anyone cares what’s being said over there. They’ll be lucky to beat Rutgers this year and they are using any excuse to try to seem like they still relevant.

Personally I’ve stopped even reading the stuff over there. It’s constant excuse making. This is just more of the same

Agreed. Also, they are so focused on us that they’re totally ignoring the monster OSU is building. Not that strange that 2 massive sports schools from wrestling hotbeds, with large populations and excellent resources to draw from, start to exert dominance once they really start to give a damn about something.

I have feelings that straddle the proverbial fence for which I hate. I would much rather take sides and plow forward.

The sandusky stain causes everything this university does to come with extra scrutiny and will for years and years to come. This bothers me and is not fair. Expected but NOT fair at all.

That being said maybe the best recruiting class maybe ever assembled is coming to town. ADs, boosters, media types, coaches, wrestlers are all asking how in this day and age is this possible. Me too and I think its a fair thing to question and speculate. PSU has a lock down on media access and just is not very "bro-y" for the most part to media types. Plus with the public narrative that the university puts athletics over morals, well this flame becomes a brush fire.

I also dont think the RTC article flo did has helped this situation either. Only served to fan the flames in my opinion. Just throwing tax returns out without context, discussion, comments, indepth or even surface journalism just allows haters to bump to a higher defcon. This community is small and while womens wrestling is getting going, there are a lot of girls in this sport. Grown men, that text like girls, sh!t talk other teams like an episode of mean girls and then push narratives in back rooms over seafood in florida just so they can score political points.

but what people dont want to admit to are the facts.
1) Zain comes off the books this year.
2) Suriano comes off the books. His $ is being spread around this year and rightfully so. But Im told this was a big # and not typical to the PSU model, something like 80% aid.
3) The 3Ns come off next year
4) most of the new class will RS. The PSU model as Im told is not all that favorable to RS. low AID $ and books. You dont get the real cash until/unless you start.
5) kids come to PSU for less than full aid and i would say most are less than 70% aid. haters can hate but that is a simple fact. Verk came for FREE! again came for FREE! Manville like Brown is on ROTC. to not understand is to just hate. on manville his life experience and what he wants for it, is so much bigger than D1 accomplishments. hard for many swallow, but talk to the kid(s) for minute and it will clear right up for you.
6) will guys transfer, sure they will. Simply because they can get more $ elsewhere and start.

For me I wish the staff would squash some of this stuff, but I understand why you dont. That said, i expect the drum Tom is now beating will only get louder as the NCs continue and the fight with the NC format reignites. Too many brownies sitting around the camp fire for it not too. this interview will become one of many i forsee in the future.

there will be posters and friends of ours that say, focus on the season, block out the noise, be happy, see the birds/rainbows/unicorns, but that is a set up for problems. Yeah I know, if your not doing anything wrong, why acknowledge the haters. yeah yeah i get it, but I dont like it. We went down this path before and we all know some could have done more to protect the integrity of the university.

my 2 cents

I have 100% confidence and faith in Cael. If he don’t feel the need to explain himself to every Tom, Dick and Harry that question his way of doing things, then why should we as fans?

Here’s an idea..if Iowa wants to be relevant again.. win.. that simple. This is big time college sports, results matter not crybaby excuses.

Keep living in the past

I’m a neutral since I actually worked in politics and can’t stand both parties now. But if you think Trump and the African -American community aren’t at serious odds, you need to get out more.

When Trump has that ridiculous press conference in Iowa City and was surrounded by an entirely white group of Iowa athletes, including many wrestlers in absolutely ridiculous garb, you don’t think that has an effect on recruits from other races? This concern has been whispered on the HR board before, but only by a few guys who don’t have their heads up their asses

Journalism is dead test

wrestling media should be beating down Toms door to get questions answered after that interview. National media that love to put PSU up at the top the hour endlessly should be at Toms door.

If you are going to accuse your peers of cheating, then be a MAN and say who it is and what they are doing.

Q to Tom: Tom you said on the record that other teams are cheating and it is hard for you to compete within the rules. Who is cheating and how are they doing it?

Tom: well .....

Q to Tom: Tom the hawkeye alumni and faithful are pumping money into your program and the HWC. With that money comes a need to win. Win the right way of course. If other schools are making the investment irrelevant, out them. Our people deserve to be playing on a level playing field.

Tom: well......

Q to Tom: No, if teams are cheating we need to investigate it, we need ameuter athletics all on the same footing. it is not fair to your athletes, your coaches, your fans that others are breaking the rules. so who is cheating

Tom: well...

Q to Tom: Your statement implies you are aware of cheating. If so have you discussed this with the NCAA? Have you called the coach of the school this is happening at? Have you spoken to our AD about him contacting said school(s)? What have you done other make an off handed comment?

Tom: well;.....

then SHUT UP. call people out, name names, if your going to imply there is wrong doing then be a MAN and call it out. put your reputation on the line. put your insurance premium on the line. put your coaches, players and school on the line.

Wrestling media, put up or shut up. Ask Tom the questions. Be a hero. Advance your career. Be the one who brought down a giant.

but alas journalism is dead and NO one, I repeat NO one in the wrestling media will ask this line of questions to Tom. So our school/program will just get cast in the shadows for years to come. I dont like that and neither should anyone else.

Im out of coffee creamer this morning....sorry guys

Some ugly stuff popping up in this thread -- unnecessarily IMO.

Dunk makes some great points. I'll just add that we should enjoy the ride. If impropriety or outright cheating is ever proven, then the derision will have been deserved, and we can take our lickings. However, it has not been proven after 6 championships in 7 years, and so I'm not going to let a bunch of angry internet posters and a frustrated coach looking for answers spoil it for me.

Debate with facts and evidence. The personal, ancient history, and unrelated stuff only weakens one's position.

I think this is the key point and for competitors, recognizing it hurts. Cael is a big part of it, but I think it has as much if not more so to do with Ruth and Taylor. Not that they won but how they won--dominance and inimitable personal style. When I was coming up we only had Dan Gable put on a pedestal but if I was a 14-year-old five years ago (and on that tier), posters of Ruth and Taylor would be on my wall and I'd have given anything to follow in their footsteps, and I'm thinking that among D1 coaches only Cael can make that happen.

Then you move up four years and look at Nolf and Nickal--again, not that they win but how they win. They're further proof that Cael is not only going to make me great but nurture my style and let me be me, same as Ruth and Taylor. (Not taking anything away from Cael, but I tend to think Zain's trajectory would have been similar in most good coach's hands.) Anyway, if you can't see that that's worth accepting a discount on scholarship dollars, you're probably out of touch with how young kids think (which circles you back to why your scholarship dollar isn't going as far as Cael's).

I know you cannot talk about recruits until you receive the National Letters of Intent on November 8. Can you give me a general overview of the recruiting season?

Brands: Recruiting is going fine. We don’t have a lot of money. We are strapped for money. There are 9.9 scholarships. We do it legal. We do it by the book. We are working hard to make sure we get the best guys in our program. We have two very good commitments right now. We are very happy with that. You just cannot throw money, it’s not unlimited. People have to understand that. I know that Ryan Morningstar does a great job with that. I have complete faith in him. Last year we spent three and a half scholarships. When you have three and a half scholarships available, you know what it is pretty dang easy to bring in eight or ten top flight recruits and you are going to get five or six of them. Plus a transfer with Lugo. You are going to be able to do that. We don’t have money. And because we don’t have money we have to be kind of careful exactly how we recruit.
************************************************

I see nothing wrong with this. Many of you are way overboard, almost paranoid about a couple words in a quote, thinking or knowing (?) somehow that it's directed at Penn State.

Relax, enjoy the season, be thankful for what we have here, and let the clanging cymbal's clang.

If you don't have the necessary facts, throw shyt out and rationalize. Not a new model.
Sad part is most could not tell the difference between a fact and a rationalization if their life depended on making the distinction.

This (not cheating) is the real explanation for the current landscape in college wrestling. It's not rocket science, though it's a difficult fact for many on HR to accept.

I like Brands, but his thinly veiled inference that other school(s) are cheating was foolish, though the HR folks lapped it up.

Thanks for providing the actual quote .. and bingo. Brands did not imply anything about PSU or any of the other schools ahead of Iowa. People here inferred it.

HR regularly beclowns itself about PSU -- and how are those Compliance Office calls going anyway? Maybe we should learn their lesson and not beclown ourselves similarly about Iowa.

Now, if we want to talk about cheating ... Oof. But this isn't on Brands or the Iowa Wrestling program. This is on the suspect. Wrestling is irrelevant to this story. And it could've happened anywhere.

BS, Roar is always calling people out for throwing shit against the wall just like brands saying "we do it legal". If Brands had something to say he should of said it. His Morningstar reference reminds me of George Bush saying " You are doing a hell of a job Brownie" throwing him under the bus during Katrina. They didn't even have Brooks on their radar for blank sakes.

Ya, I agree with this. Don't see what others are inferring. Some of you guys are ridiculous.

The quote was not Brands. The quotes were from well respected HR posters who have some access to their program.

Response from others to the inference.

“So, are you guys suggesting that if Hidlay chooses NC State, it's because the Hawkeye program refused to compromise its principles and cheat to get him? Is that why it didn't get Silva (Michigan)? Or Thomsen (Nebraska)? Rocky Jordan or Sammy Sasso (tOSU)? Gable Steveson (Minnesota)? Other guys posters here were interested in?

Those are rhetorical questions. But I'm just pointing out that the Hawkeyes aren't missing on recruits this year just because PSU is loading up for its next cycle. You might be losing out on other high-quality guys for completely unrelated reasons. And you had a strong class last year. And PSU isn't the only team finishing ahead of you at NCAAs on a regular basis. Are Tom Ryan and John Smith cheating?”

“I think it would be more than beneficial if CP stepped up and speak truthfully to what he said two weeks ago on FRL - “many wrestling programs cheat.”

PSU fan - it’s not just the Hawks that are saying “something” is up...the number one wrestling media source is saying something....”

Let them keep believing the problem is others cheating, when the real problem stares back at them in the mirror. The longer it takes for them to realize that, the more championships PSU and tOSU will accumulate.
If they don’t think HS kids can’t see this, they’re in deeper denial than ever. Imagine having a recruiting tactic that includes “they’re cheating,” and then they come onto the PSU campus and see that it was all smoke?
Keep trying Brands. Just keep trying.

Agree with Roar and others that it's a real stretch to suggest Brands was implicitly calling out Penn State. My comment above was a generalization about the consistent talking points I see on HR, but rereading mine I realize it could be construed otherwise and just want to clarify that I wasn't talking about Brands. I've listened to enough Tom Brands interviews to know it'd be really out of character for him to point his finger at another program.

Go check out the thread if you think people here are being ridiculous. Instead of knocking people here for standing up for our team some here would rather put there head in the sand.

Some people don’t like confrontation some don’t back away with it. No reason to scold people on this board standing up for the team we love

Further. Im proud of this team. I’m a fan and a big one. If people choose to ignore other fan bases consistently bashing our team and coaches and credibility then stay quiet both ways. Why only “scold fans of the team many of here love?”

Go check out the thread Roar. Then come back here and tell me how they don’t insinuate it’s PSU cheating. And if you don’t care what they say..we’ll either do I. But when it’s brought to this board I have every right to take offense to it even if you and others do not

It’s like fans of Johns Hopkins lacrosse being shocked that Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State are developing top notch lacrosse programs once they take it seriously.

Brands was 100% leading that "somebody is cheating" when he mentions that they do it legal and also by the book. I'm sure it is possible he was talking about Purdue or Northern Colorado, but you need not possess a great deal of intuitive intellect to know he is talking about either tOSU or PSU and most likely both. I can't really blame Brands as this is a perfect way to explain away the programs failures. The group thinkers on HR will run with this and even Brands (Though certainly not brilliant) is smart enough to know this.

"We do it legal, we do it by the book".....How could anyone not see the implication of this statement. He is clearly saying that recruiting is harder for them because they do it by the book while other are not. He absolutely should be called out for this just like Dunke said. Seems like some people on this board are far more concerned with coming off as a nice guy then they are with being genuine. Chamberlain would be proud, Czechoslovakia, not so much.

Yawn. Cheaters cheat. Winners win. Whiners whine. Season can't start soon enough!

It’s harder for them because their whole staff save Morningstar seems to be a bunch of awkward meatheads. Penn State aside. Tom Ryan and J Jaggers coming for a home visit versus the 2 Iowa Heat Misers?
