From the HR Board

With credit to Todd Conner and the Iowa Wrestling Fan...

I know you cannot talk about recruits until you receive the National Letters of Intent on November 8. Can you give me a general overview of the recruiting season?

Brands: Recruiting is going fine. We don’t have a lot of money. We are strapped for money. There are 9.9 scholarships. We do it legal. We do it by the book. We are working hard to make sure we get the best guys in our program. We have two very good commitments right now. We are very happy with that. You just cannot throw money, it’s not unlimited. People have to understand that. I know that Ryan Morningstar does a great job with that. I have complete faith in him. Last year we spent three and a half scholarships. When you have three and a half scholarships available, you know what it is pretty dang easy to bring in eight or ten top flight recruits and you are going to get five or six of them. Plus a transfer with Lugo. You are going to be able to do that. We don’t have money. And because we don’t have money we have to be kind of careful exactly how we recruit.
************************************************

I see nothing wrong with this. Many of you are way overboard, almost paranoid about a couple words in a quote, thinking or knowing (?) somehow that it's directed at Penn State.

Relax, enjoy the season, be thankful for what we have here, and let the clanging cymbal's clang.
Thanks. I had to read several times just to try and get fired up at Brands. After the third time I realized that there is nothing to it. Much ado about nothing IMO. As for the HR posters...if it really pisses people off then why read it?

"We do it legal, we do it by the book".....How could anyone not see the implication of this statement. He is clearly saying that recruiting is harder for them because they do it by the book while other are not. He absolutely should be called out for this just like Dunke said. Seems like some people on this board are far more concerned with coming off as a nice guy then they are with being genuine. Chamberlain would be proud, Czechoslovakia, not so much.
This would be a much closer comparison if Czechoslovakia had been invaded by Moldova instead of by Hitler. Also less offensive.

We have nothing to fear until Inference and Accusation start beating Nico in thr room. On the other hand, Godwin has defeated this thread with an illegal fist to the back.

Fine line for sure. Could interpret it as "we could cheat to get extra recruits but we don't" in a vacuum, which doesn't implicate anyone per se. I think it's just one of those things that's on everyone's mind.

But yeah, Cael is better at this game than anyone else

No offense Roar but I don't think I've ever seen you find anything wrong/offensive with anything o_O

Thanks for providing the actual quote .. and bingo. Brands did not imply anything about PSU or any of the other schools ahead of Iowa. People here inferred it.

HR regularly beclowns itself about PSU -- and how are those Compliance Office calls going anyway? Maybe we should learn their lesson and not beclown ourselves similarly about Iowa.

Now, if we want to talk about cheating ... Oof. But this isn't on Brands or the Iowa Wrestling program. This is on the suspect. Wrestling is irrelevant to this story. And it could've happened anywhere.
http://www.press-citizen.com/story/...eme-prompts-charges-university-iowa/808335001

He clearly didn't follow the by the book mantra Brands is espousing.

And I love the use of the word beclown....priceless!!!

There is nothing to get upset with regarding what Brands said, but it was said. He implied some weren't playing fair. Since psu, tOsu and Osu are all out recruiting him it's probably to those programs he is referring albeit with no further proof of said mischief. I have a feeling if he was #2 he wouldn't of said it.

To claim otherwise and say nothing to see here folks, move along is probably not what the founders of Rivals had intended.

...no question that Brands feels he's at a disadvantage...
... but not vs Penn State... they have always done it right...
... he's really fighting the image of Gable... who always interpreted the rules to his advantage ... :(

Love Tom Brands. Tells it like it is. An honest, loyal, humble, hardworking man. A hero of mine forever!

Nice game with the Buckeyes so far btw. Saquon Barkley for Heisman! Probably my favorite college player next to Josey Jewell. Cheers!

Since you know him so well can you clarify his statement for me?

Journalism is dead test

wrestling media should be beating down Toms door to get questions answered after that interview. National media that love to put PSU up at the top the hour endlessly should be at Toms door.

If you are going to accuse your peers of cheating, then be a MAN and say who it is and what they are doing.

Q to Tom: Tom you said on the record that other teams are cheating and it is hard for you to compete within the rules. Who is cheating and how are they doing it?

Tom: well .....

Q to Tom: Tom the hawkeye alumni and faithful are pumping money into your program and the HWC. With that money comes a need to win. Win the right way of course. If other schools are making the investment irrelevant, out them. Our people deserve to be playing on a level playing field.

Tom: well......

Q to Tom: No, if teams are cheating we need to investigate it, we need ameuter athletics all on the same footing. it is not fair to your athletes, your coaches, your fans that others are breaking the rules. so who is cheating

Tom: well...

Q to Tom: Your statement implies you are aware of cheating. If so have you discussed this with the NCAA? Have you called the coach of the school this is happening at? Have you spoken to our AD about him contacting said school(s)? What have you done other make an off handed comment?

Tom: well;.....

then SHUT UP. call people out, name names, if your going to imply there is wrong doing then be a MAN and call it out. put your reputation on the line. put your insurance premium on the line. put your coaches, players and school on the line.

Wrestling media, put up or shut up. Ask Tom the questions. Be a hero. Advance your career. Be the one who brought down a giant.

but alas journalism is dead and NO one, I repeat NO one in the wrestling media will ask this line of questions to Tom. So our school/program will just get cast in the shadows for years to come. I dont like that and neither should anyone else.

Im out of coffee creamer this morning....sorry guys
Preach!

I had a "remember when" today with an OSU fan at preseason nationals in Cedar Falls. The good old days.

Seriously, though. I see tOSU taking the top spot shortly. Better recruiting grounds and money. PSU will hang in there like Okie St and Iowa. Michigan is going to be good, they have MONEY too. Iowa better make the greatest wrestling complex on this planet or hire a coach that kids want to wrestle for free for.

Is Dan Gable stupid? I don't think so, but every situation is different. If he didn't think Tom could coach, he wouldn't be there.

What do you know another BWI thread about HR. You guys are like 12 year old gossip queens. "Look what they said on their forum!". You ever posted on HR? Or do you just repost all of the HR posts on BWI where you can get upvotes from your fanbase?

Some people don’t like confrontation some don’t back away with it. No reason to scold people on this board standing up for the team we love

Yep, you just gossip about HR posts on BWI. If you have something to say about the HR comments feel free to say them on HR. I can guarantee our moderator won't moderate you for it. (can't say the same in reverse).

Just about every HR thread turns into a Cael (Carl, Bael) hate fest, tin foil hat time or Sandusky. So I guess there's plenty of mutual admiration on both boards.

How many threads do you see on HR about what you guys are posting on BWI? I don't recall any.

Idc what the content is. If you take issue with an HR post, comment and call it out directly on HR. Reposting and bitching about it here is just petty. Especially when you've got people like pish69 talking about standing up to confrontation and defending your team. Are you really standing up for your team if you're avoiding the HR post and just criticizing HR on your own fanbase forum?

Like I said, I can guarantee the HR mod won't ban PSU posters for discussion. You have to hardcore troll to receive a ban there. Same can not be said for here.

Hey vodka, crawl back to your site. We actually talk wrestling here and it has been quite a while since a HR thread, unlike the 10 year old girls you all act like. Plus we were responding to an interview with TB as well as follow up from The HR gaggle.

Plus, i asked you a specific question about calling out abusive posters, and you acted like a little girl, despite you saying you didnt allow it. So, be a man and crawl back. I was told to stay off your forum and I have. And the filth thrown out after was ridiculous.

There was another HR post around a week ago or less. You serious? I don't come to your site often, but every single time I do there is a post on the first page, "I read this on HR....".

East coast was always supposed to be more thick skinned and happy to engage in confrontation. This board and many users on this board have a tendency to gossip and post about people behind their backs like children. If you take issue with any of the comments OP linked, go call the people out on HR for it. Our moderator allows that. You will get push back obviously, but it's better than treating a college wrestling forum like a teenage girl's social media outlet.

Whether one chooses to be annoyed by Brands' comments or not, one would have to be incredibly naïve to think he is not casting aspersions on teams that have outrecruited Iowa in recent years; primarily Penn State and Ohio State chief among them.

Now, I could give a rat's a** what this midget says about my program, but let's not pretend we don't realize exactly what he meant.

Can we quit with the 'little girl' stuff? The back-and-forth name-calling, I-know-you-are-but-what-am-I nanny-nanny-boo-boo does not accomplish anything other than make both boards look foolish.

Vodka, I tend to agree with your point that if someone here takes issue with something going on at HR that they should go to the source to deal with it, but I can also respect the perspective that you don't go to someone else's house and tell them how to run it unless you want a lot of vitriolic pushback in return. I can't attest to the OP's perspective, but both boards are guilty of complaining about one another a lot.

In the meantime, we'll probably continue to bust on you here about your attempted 60 Minutes bit over there, because, well, it's just more fun to do it here. ;)

Likewise, feel free to become an HR moderator instead of attempting to impose it here.

That HR thread where the mod told the posters to stop whining so much ... that went well.

Laughable on so many levels. Wtf are you even talking about? HR mods don't ban PSU folks for discussion? When I take issue with shit on HR.. I do as you say and I take it up there. The end result? Your sensitive type there begs and pleads to the mods to throw down the banhammer. And how do we know all that? Because the mod himself created a thread calling you all out as a bunch of whiners and asked that you some how, some way find a backbone and grow a set of balls when someone says something you don't particularly agree with instead of bombarding him with pm's like a bunch of 5 year olds.

You have me confused now. I'm told when I post there that I really shouldn't take issue or be defensive and to keep quiet because it's your house. Now you're telling me we should take it up there (not here) when we disagree with what's being said. So which is it?

I honestly don't ever recall reading a thread on HR or even comments on HR about what is discussed on BWI. I imagine it's happened, before but I don't ever recall it and I view the board daily.

You can mock me calling/emailing the compliance departments all you want. I take no offense. The fact is, the compliance departments mission statement explicitly states their job is to ensure programs are complying with the NCAA regulations bylaws and it's also their job to communicate and answer questions from the community. Some of you seem to think it's not their job to talk to and respond to inquires from fans. That's simply not the case. Out of the ~ 10 schools I contacted, the only one I received a response back from was U of Iowa.

Regardless of whether or not any wrestling program is 'cheating', there are some definite vague areas open for manipulation in regards to bypassing the scholarship limitations. College recruiting 'cheating' is not a rare thing. There is a long history of it across many sports.

I've always added the caveat that I have absolutely no insider info and everything I post is pure speculation/skeptical questioning. That doesn't prevent some people from becoming incredibly butthurt and overly defensive.

I respect a good discussion. I just don't get the pettiness that is somewhat prevalent on college wrestling forums - this board, themat (worst of them all), and HR.

That HR thread where the mod told the posters to stop whining so much ... that went well.

What does that have to do with this discussion? As I've said I've never reported or 'ignored' anybody. I'm a big advocate of talking directly with the people you disagree with rather than make a post on another corner of the web to cry about it. It's ironic you mention the HR mod telling posters to stop whining and deal with it, when the mods of this forum are as trigger happy as you can get to any opposition.
