FWIW: Will Fries’ Redshirt Situation Has James Franklin In A Bind

More important than Fries this week is whether McGovern returns. If so, then Fries would likely be on deck with Bates-Dowrey-Gaia-McGovern-Wright. If those guys can start then you run them the distance. If PSU builds a big lead then perhaps you start subbing in Gonzalez and Laurent along the interior and maybe Jenkins or Brosnan at OT.

If Manon is done for the year then it may make sense to get Fries game experience, but otherwise I think you get him prepared to play during the week and cross your fingers that you don't need him before Manon comes back.

If you are going to consider line-ups next year
Gaia, Dowery, Nelson, Wright, Palmer and Mahon all graduate this year. Nelson, Wright and Mahon may have 5th yr available, but they will have degrees, and unless they see themselves being healthy and no job prospects they may just move on in 2017.
From what we have heard Menet and Fries may already be better than any of these guys now. Also if they are as good as advertised, then we would not see them stick here for 5 years - gone with degree in 4 years and to NFL.
Have you ever even watched a PSU game?

Don't know about the future plans of Nelson and Mahon. Chasz Wright, however, was a true freshman in the class of 2014. He is currently a redshirt sophomore. I don't know what his academic standing is. I'm pretty sure he plans to return next year though.

From whom have we heard this? One of our fellow posters who has never even seen a practice? I will be happy if Mahon and Nelson are healthy and want to play one more year. I bet the staff will be too.

if they are going to use FR who currently are RS (Menet, Fries or other), i would assume it would be at Rutgers just because you need to start getting time with any players you move like this. Mahon and McGovern injury times appear to be unknown - i.e. would we even see them for MSU?

I trust the coaches to decide who is ready. From my POV the key thing driving their decision should be is that we need to win NOW, and there is no tomorrow. In other words, i hope they are not trying to project possible success in 2017 or 2018 into the equation. i am not a believer that this team will be able to improve on the current record next year. schedule and teams next year does not favor that idea.

Chase Wright came in '14 class. I believe next year he will be a 4th year Junior.
