He will wrestle and play football

Spencer Myers added football for his 5th year. (Kerry reportedly was none too happy with that decision.) He did not place at nationals.

And I don;t think he excelled at football, in fact, I don't think he even won a starting job. Dave Joyner was successful at both as he was an AA in both sports.

Steve Sefter back in my college days. 2x AA in wrestling and a Football NC ring I believe. He was light compared to the unlimited heavies back then. I think he was about 230

Not that it was ever anything other than difficult, BUT it was once a lot easier to wrestle AND play college football.

At PSU alone, Mike Reid, Dave Joyner, and Steve Sefter all did it. All were multi-year starters for the football team, not just back-ups.

The problem is that the football season gradually got longer and longer, from 10 or 11 regular season games in the 60s-80s to today's seasons, which are never shorter than 12.

It has been proposed, off-hand, by Wade Schalles to start the wrestling season later in the year. Among other reasons, Schalles opined that this could draw in more football athletes to heavyweight wrestling. It's an interesting thought anyway.

Didn't Adam Coon get a scholarship offer from Nicky Saban?

Former starting DE/LS Bob Jones also wrestled back around the turn of the century.

And with Joyner came Ira Lubert a year later who helped raise the $5 million nest egg that is the bane of HR. One of 4 on a comitee that caused Cael to come here as literally a lateral move from salary perspective. The architect of Iowa fundraising and the Inner Circle for wrestling and they can’t get close to keeping up. Love him or hate him, Lubert and Curley helped huge with the CS hire and Putting Vodka in rehab. Need another $10 million from Ira to really turn the screws
