So 2016 was a "fluke win" thanks to a "lucky special teams play". If we win on Saturday, how will it be spun? A sneak preview.
Bucknuts Roundtable: Penn State
Dave Biddle: Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley will be a big problem for an OSU defense that has a propensity to give up big plays. McSorley (and Penn State's offense in general) combined with the atmosphere at Beaver Stadium is why I think PSU has a chance to pull off the upset. They're not a great team, but they are a good team who will play over their heads on Saturday.

One of the B1G’s top matchups also means that everyone is getting their predictions in for Saturday night’s affair. On Thursday morning, several ESPN reporters provided their winner and final score prediction.
In total, 17 ESPN reporters provided their score prediction for Saturday’s game between No. 4 Ohio State and No. 9 Penn State. The results were pretty one-sided.
12 of the 17 reporters selected the Buckeyes to win the B1G East battle, but 10 of those 12 predicted a one-score finish. All five who picked the Nittany Lions had the game within a touchdown.

It's funny, 17 of 23 writers above pick Ohio State to win, even though the spread is only 3.5 and ESPN's FPI has PSU with a 53.6% chance to win the game.

One thing I haven't seen mention that worries me is our place kicking. Pinegar has looked okay, but has missed some FGs (though not easy ones). I'm nervous about this being a close game and having to rely on a relatively unproven true freshman in a pressure situation.

The 2016 White Out game was on TV tonight. Some thoughts:
- It is amazing how much bettter our offense, particularly the OL, is now than 2 years ago.
- It is discouraging how much better our defense, particularly the DL, was then compared to now.
- John Reid was really good. Hope he can get back to that.
- The LBs we had, Bell, Cabinda and Bowen, were really good.
- Despite the fact he was not playing in the game, Herby made repeated comments about Zeke Eliot and his great “character.” Made me wonder how someone as close the their program as Herby, did not hear of all the domestic abuse rumors. Makes me wonder if he just didn’t care.
- Herby felated “Urban Meyer” all game. If you were playing a drinking game and drank every time Herby said “Urban Meyer” you would have succumbed to alcohol poisoning in the first half.
- We are soooo much better in the return game now.
- The White Out crowd makes a huge difference. In that game the White Out crowd was the quietest I have heard it mostly because it rained all game and we played badly for most of the game.
- There were some really egregious spots in that game. Announcers made no comment.
- Barkley lost yardage a lot. I loved him, but it’s easy to love Sanders. With the benefit of hindsight they should have played Sanders every third series at the least.
Really pumped for Saturday night!

Herbie also spent the entire first half gushing about OSU’s fearsome pass rush. By the end of the game, PSU 6 sacks, OSU 1.

On whether Penn State’s White Out is the best college football atmosphere
Herbstreit: I’m not saying this, whether it’s Big Ten, Pac-12, SEC. Everything I say I try to be as fair as I can be and there are some great atmospheres out there. It’s the best atmosphere year in and year out.
This thing started back in ‘05, and it’s just kind of become an annual thing where they’ve picked the one home game. Last year it was Michigan, two years ago Ohio State, this year Ohio State. And until you’ve gone there and seen it, you just can’t really quite understand it.
Now it helps that Penn State is back to being Penn State and obviously they went away there for a while. But that ‘16 game to me up against Ohio State got them back to kind of being the program that we’re now accustomed to seeing. And when they’re ranked in the top 10 and they bring in an opponent in the top 10, you’re not going to find a better, more intimidating, more involved fan base for 60 minutes than the White Out at State College.

These Big Ten and White Out games tend to be slow-moving, cagey affairs. I think last year’s PSU-OSU game was an outlier, and we’ll return to the low-to-medium-scoring games of the past.
Edit: While I obviously wouldn’t call a shootout impossible, I also don’t think it’s totally impossible that we run over a good defense at home like we did to Iowa and MSU in 2016, and Michigan last year. Sometimes, at the Beav, we can unleash avalanches on even the very good teams. We’ll see tomorrow.
