Gattis to Maryland as OC

The DMV is loaded with talent and if Maryland can put together a staff that can both recruit and coach they could become a legitimate challenge to PSU. However that’s been said for 50 years or so through multiple staffs. The biggest initial loser in this is Rutgers, as if they didn’t have enough problems.

Saban had him on the Bama staff in some capacity over the past year. Say what you want about Jones' coaching, but that dude recruited really well at Tenn. even after it became obvious he didn't know his Xs and Os.

I think he was one of the 17 "analysts" employed by Saban. Only person I know who has more people working for them is Sandy.;)

I wonder how Metchie and Alfano feel about that?

Still confident that Metchie would have signed with Penn State if it weren't for Gattis at Bama.

Feel bad for Metchie and kids when this happens. When they are verbally told one thing, sign a contract, and then what they were told a week ago prior to signing ends up not being true.

Whether that evidence exists or not (and let's face it, such "evidence" would always, by definition, have to incorporate a significant subjective component)..... I think the one sure bet is that - in either event - you will never see it :)

Well, I will need more than the usual " he's not on our staff, so he must be better than whoever we have" argument we see around here

Is this confirmed?
If so I am shocked.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Josh Gattis is set to join Mike Locksley’s staff at Maryland, BamaInsider.com has learned. After serving as Alabama’s co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach this past season, Gattis is expected to take on the role of offensive coordinator at Maryland.

Gattis joined Alabama this season after spending the past six seasons working as a receivers coach under James Franklin at Vanderbilt (2012-13) and Penn State (2014-17). He played an integral role working with Locksley in Alabama’s offense this past season, helping the Crimson Tide finish No. 3 in scoring offense (45.6 points per game) and No. 6 in total offense (522 yards per game). Alabama’s passing offense finished No. 6 in the nation averaging, averaging 323.6 yards per game.

Gattis also helped develop Biletnikoff Award winner Jerry Jeudy, who recorded 68 receptions for 1,315 yards and 14 touchdowns through 15 games. Alabama had five receivers with 40 or more receptions and 600 or more yards.

On top of his coaching efforts, Gattis was also viewed as one of Alabama’s top recruiters. He helped the Crimson Tide land five-star defensive lineman Antonio Alfano as well as four-star receiver John Metchie and four-star defensive lineman Justin Eboigbe in this year’s class.

Locksley served as Alabama’s offensive coordinator this past season. He stayed with the team through its run in the College Football Playoff despite accepting the head coaching job at Maryland in December.

Gattis will be there 2 years maximum if he’s any good at coordinating an offense. He was already interviewed for head coaching jobs

At the end of the day, penn state is penn state and Maryland is Maryland. If CJF can’t roll these guys with the recruiting classes he’s bringing in, then psu has bigger problems than who’s calling plays at Maryland

I don’t see him being there for very long either. If, a big if, Maryland turns their program around to a 7-10 win program over the next few years, he’ll be gone for a head coaching job in no time.

Absolutely, it's no secret that Gattis wants a HC position. If he has any success in the next 2 years, he will jump at a HC position. Hell, he was going for the App State HC position this year.

College football in so many ways is such a shady operation. What other business do you know that would hire someone from the outside into a high level responsible position, knowing that in a year or so that person will leave and try to steal as many of your existing valuable employees as possible. Especially when the hire wasn’t a desperate bid to evade bancrupcy.

And if they have what is perceived as one bad year, they get fired. Life sucks and then you die.

Mitchie should realize that if he were lied to by Gattis, he will have a good chance to transfer, without penalty, it he wishes. Fields lawyer is available.

Well, they have a ton of work to do. Maryland is a blip on the recruiting radar right now in DMV (being generous), especially in NoVA. They are making some nice upgrades to athletic facilities but the campus still falls way short of the big boys. I think that their only hope is that a few guys from the big time beltway schools stick around out of loyalty and things snowball.

Kids cant be this dumb or can they? Everyone knows Bama changes assistants almost every year. How many differenct OC the last few years? At least 3 or 4. Kiffin, Sarkisian, Daboll, Locksley and now a new one. I'm all for protecting the kids in these situations, but this is one where it would have to take a fool to not realize these guys would be gone fast. Their consolation prize, getting a free ride at Bama and winning a championship anyway.

But you will always have a job because of your network. More places you go, the larger your network grows. Crazy life for coaches.

Correct. I think the initial class or two will be pretty strong, then they suck, then they lose coaches to better jobs, then Locksley does some shady stuff or just doesnt win enough and then the cycle repeats itself. They'll get a few kids we would have, but highly unlikely Gattis sees them out to the pros. Franklin can and should sell that with stability.

Bottom line Alabama has Studs, never really impressed with their Offense
