Gattis to Maryland as OC

remember all of the angst when Shoop left? Would you want him over Pry today? I wouldn't

David Jones is the Captain Angst of Penn State beat reporters.

Don't blame Bob Shoop for moving to Tennessee; he now has some security and no one does at PSU

I think that's what's going on with Bob Shoop and his move to Tennessee. He knows head coach Butch Jones' job at Tennessee is probably quite a bit less tenuous than that of James Franklin at Penn State. And if he can get close to $4 million over three years in a state he knows and his family likes? Really not much to think about.

And I don't think UT will show Jones the door if he goes, say 7-6 in 2016. I would not make the same prediction with Franklin.

And so Shoop surveyed this landscape and decided his chances of success and security and longevity were greater with Jones.

Still, this can only be interpreted as an indictment of Franklin in Shoop's eyes. And those eyes are pretty perceptive.

Finally, Shoop has the material coming this fall at Tennessee that he would not have at Penn State. The Nittany Lion defense will be in rebuilding mode at the same time Franklin and his new coordinator are trying to pick a new starting quarterback - any of whom will be a raw rookie, even Trace McSorley.

The DMV is loaded with talent and if Maryland can put together a staff that can both recruit and coach they could become a legitimate challenge to PSU. However that’s been said for 50 years or so through multiple staffs. The biggest initial loser in this is Rutgers, as if they didn’t have enough problems.

I don't think MD is a threat to PSU in the near future at all simply based on talent gap.

But I do think the talent could POSSIBLY land MD as a solid 7 win team in few years with the talent Lox accumulates.

Durkin left some high 3 stars and 4 stars. You dont beat Texas 2 years in a row and almost OSu with nothing. But again no depth beyond a few stars.

Recruiting and wins takes DEPTH.

Thus far:

Locksley
Gattis
Butch Jones
Elijah Brooks (former DeMatha HS HC)

I dont think Butch is official yet...is he? That a is a great recruiter staff for a Maryland standard but lacks the coching development IMO.

Gattis and Brooks are very good recruiters and solid personalities.

And Jones makes a living giving an opinion. Wow! If you didn't know better, you'd think this was a parody article written today looking back to early 2016. Instead, it's Jones contemporaneously swinging and missing about as badly as an "expert" ever has.

Absolutely, it's no secret that Gattis wants a HC position. If he has any success in the next 2 years, he will jump at a HC position. Hell, he was going for the App State HC position this year.

On a similar note, if Locksley proves to be who he is as a head coach then Gsttis may become the Maryland head coach in two years.

You mean they fire Lox? And elevate Gattis?

Interesting future projection and not a bad one at all.

Very good one actually because I think Gattis is a far better coach/manager of a program than Lox

Here’s my guess, Gattis had the title of Co-Off Coordinator. Locksley takes the job at MD. Gattis wants to be the OC at Alabama.

Saban, my guess, is not ready to turn those reins over to someone that he doesn’t think is ready to call the plays. Tells Gattis that he will not be the play calling OC, that he is going to bring in someone to do that. An NFL guy, an OC at another big program etc.

So Gattis who wants to call plays, decides to go to Maryland, which I personally think is a mistake for him. His ambition is getting the best of him in this case. Again my opinion.

I think that Gattis’ career in the long run would be better served by staying at Alabama in his current position for at least one more year. It would another chance to serve under Saban, a new OC comes in it would give him another play calling perspective to observe and learn from.

Then in Jan of 2020, he then may be Sagan’s choice for OC if the new guy leaves as history has shown or he maybe that much more marketable after having been at Alabama for 2 years.

If he goes to MD and they do well under his Play calling he gets a mid major HC. If they suck at MD, what’s he do? He is no worse off by staying at Bama. My guess from a career standpoint as the MD OC he can only go down from the job opportunities that he would have if he goes to MD.

My guess the MD offense would have to be unbelievable for him to get a P5 job from his new position. Which isn’t likely.

I could be wrong, it happens all the time, but isn’t locksley anticipated to be calling the plays for the terps next year?

Maryland had 38,000 fans against OSU last year in a 58,0000 seat stadium.
Locksley won 1 game in 3 years at New Mexico. What looks ominous on the onset is not that big of a deal.
He was a great recruiter at Illinois, stay tuned.

LOL! With the benefit of hindsight, Jones wishes he had never written that article.

Well, he wasn't going to really run the offense at Maryland, and he isn't going to run it at Meatchicken so why not go for the payday?

Theres no way Harbaugh is handing over his offense to Gattis. This is a recruiting move

With a coordinator title to placate his ego. He can then use that on his resume to get an actual coordinator position or head coach position at a smaller school.

The fox sports article before the 2016 Pitt-PSU game missed just as bad. The article is no longer live, but the title was something like "Pitt is the Program Penn State wants to be." Here is a quote I from it:

"Pitt has an upward trajectory. Pat Narduzzi, the Panthers’ second-year head coach, is respected around college football for his defensive genius, and he’s clearly following his former boss Mark Dantonio’s gameplan in building the Pitt program."

"Right now, Pitt is what Penn State wants to be — a program that's good and clearly getting better."

Audrey "Mom Jeans" Snyder was saying the same thing summer of 2016.

That 2016 jones article is another example of why he is clearly bent on damaging PSU, and the motive is clear as day since he tells us he's an OSU grad. The premise that Franklin was on the verge of being fired after 2015 is absurd and he floats it as fact.

These ohio people will stop at nothing to win football games. They will actually dedicate their careers to trying to screw over OSU rivals.

Piss on the lot of them.

There is absolutely no evidence that Gattis is a good coordinator.
I think Gattis is an awesome coach.

But Maryland is still going to be Maryland -- even if Locksley brings in Parcells and Belichick and Saban, it will still be Maryland with a 54,000-seat stadium that is half full for a big game -- except when it's full of Penn State fans.

It is interesting -- Maryland dithered so long over firing Durkin -- I thought it was because they didn't have the money to pay his buyout and a new coach. But apparently someone found some cash somewhere becuase this is some big salaries they've taken on.

Remember, they originally didn't fire Durkin. In fact, their president wanted to but the Board said "You fire him, we fire you." They thought it was water under the bridge until the tidal wave of public opinion came crashing down upon them.
