Zemek is clueless. Gene Smith has absolutely no, zero, say in whether Meyer continues to be employed by OSU or any disciplinary action that might be taken against him.
This is potentially an interesting set piece drama concerning university culture (yes, that wonderful word that our paragons of industry, the financial rapists known as the BOT) decided to swing around casually during Sandusky. Large universities have strict and often overly obsessive rules regarding the behavior of their employees and supervisors. Here at PSU, we just followed the Merck playbook and tried to find a culprit, whether they were guilty of anything or not. It will be interesting to see what if anything happens to Meyer and how culture plays into the decisionmaking. Smith may end up going down with the ship as well.

It's not just Merck, every big institution does it. Find the scapegoat, blame the scapegoat, for the "greater good" of the institution.

It will, indeed, be interesting. Unlike Joe, Meyer has friends in high places and they will band together to defend him if they can. That's not to say that they will Some positions are indefensible and Ohio State football isn't going to be sacrificed for Urban Meyer.
If Urbs goes down, there is a very good chance that Smith goes with him even if he isn't culpable. Smith is largely feckless and it would be a good opportunity to clean house.
When Joe and PSU went down, it was the first time something like this happened. Now, everybody has learned how to deal with these situations. MSU got off light, if you ask me, because they stood up and punched back. Nothing happened to Boeheim, either. OSU will not make the same mistakes that we did.
