looks like he is playing his way into a starting LB position with the Vikings. He looked really good, big and quick. Mauti is playing later in games and will have to impress in camp to get another year. I think he gets that year :)
Not concerned with Jesse James. Just a TRUE rookie. I think he will make the team and play on a number of third downs where a pass is the likely play.

Thanks for the information. I didn't catch the game, though I have read plenty about James since last night. With James, I think it was just a case of first-game jitters.

Glad to hear about Hodges. Mauti is a fighter (or some 'f' word). I think he'll stick with the Vikings.

Well, after watching the NFL for a number of years as well as CFB, my one takeaway is that the guys who were good in college do not always make the jump to the big time. Sure, there are some surprises. But on the whole, no. Even the best CFB teams only average, over their history, 3-4 players per year. And that's including the the HoFers, the good players, and the guys who are backups down to the Moonlight Graham equivalents like Joe Iorio, who only dressed for one NFL regular season game in his life--and did not play.

I'm not sure Mauti is going to make the team. If not someone will pick him up and maybe he'll get a better opportunity there.

Tell that to the 2001 Miami Hurricanes roster... obvious outlier but still.

Like I said, on average. Most of our 1994 offense got at least a cup of coffee in the NFL, for example. And those numbers are over a longer period of time, when the NFL was smaller than it is now.

Still, the point is that CFB fans' expectations of the NFL success of their team's stars generally tend to exceed reality--sometimes by quite a bit.

Looking back at that 01 Canes roster, 17 eventual 1st round picks! Unbelievable.

I don't think Mauti makes the team this year. They're my second favorite team so I've watched them and Mauti simply doesn't get the reps. I get the feeling Zimmer just doesn't like him for some reason. They have Audie Cole ahead of him. Cole's a zero, he seems to make terrible first steps and has zero instincts--he's fast though--but IMO a terrible linebacker. I still think Mauti will get picked up, ferocious special teams player and runs pretty well considering his knees were completely rebuilt (shame).

On the other side, I think Hodges has the inside track for the 3rd linebacker spot. He's looked very good and always seems to be around the ball. Pulled James down yesterday for a short gain and looked as if he hollered back to him when he was walking away. Probably shouted a "We are" cheer! Seriously though Hodges looks good and could develop into a dominant linebacker if he stays healthy. Real nose for the ball and he's gotten thicker.

It's the most insane roster ever.

RBs - oh, only Willis McGahee, Frank Gore, Clinton Portis, and Najeh Davenport.

How about Ed Reed, Antrel Rolle and Sean Taylor

Or Jeremy Shockey and Kellen Winslow

etc.

Florida has been DEEP with Div 1 talent for a long time. I just read somewhere that Tre Nixon (4 Star) is the #43 ranked player in the state. Could that be accurate?

They have 47 4*s. and his composite is 35.

Additionally, 4*s or higher: Texas has 47, Cali 43, Georgia 25, LA 19, Ohio 11, PA 9, MI 9, AL 9, MS 9
