we're young enough, no question. we've got some really nice players here now and more on the way.

leading me to wonder if some kids who might project themselves as starters are concerned that they might actually have to wait their turn.. or prove to be as special as they think they are.

we've got incoming frosh zek and hill (pretty much equals) and the (much hoped) possibility of andrew pryts. given returning crew that includes reid and taylor... one can't help but wonder how this sorts out.

regardless, we're loaded there and across the LOS... shore up the LB situation and this D is gold.

imo, of course.

Gotta get the best recruits possible and let them fight it out for their positions. Alabama, LSU, and others have been doing this for years...stockpiling and playing young talent. Our turn soon!!! We are....

I think Allen, Campbell, and Haley's early success is actually a selling point. Now Reid too. "Come in we'll get you a degree in 3 years and if you're good enough you'll play on an incredible defense and the League will notice you." Some of the recruits talk about Allen already on Twitter. He's that impressive.

that's an impossibility. You are never too good too young too fast......
period. Not if your serious.

The staff seems to be succeeding in their formula to recruit large, fast, versatile DB's who can flex between CB, safety and the STAR position. It gives them more depth to backfill injuries, ability to cover larger receivers, chase shifty slot receivers and TE's in the flat, stuff the run and mix up pass coverage packages depending on down and distance. Coach Vandy had the same approach with LB's. He preferred fast, agile outside LB's like Connor, Bowman, Hodges, Poz (before the knee injury) and Stupar who could cover slot receivers, TE's and RB's coming out of the backfield on pass routes.

I'm not convinced Lavert Hill ends up at Penn State. When you read the headline on Rivals the last 2 days on him "Committed but looking", it just doesn't seem to me like he'll stay with PSU. Hope I'm wrong !

He may not stay, but if he doesn't there are other fish to fry. Losing him may make it easier to get Hamlin, perhaps, if there is a bright side.

One thing that the staff is proving is that if you are good enough, you'll play early.

What is interesting about that is that Reid is the only one that was really highly regarded by recruiting services coming in. So either our system may be really utilizing talents to their maximum, they are receiving outstanding coaching and improving physically with our training, or Franklin knows what he's looking for that recruiting services may not see. I think probably some of all three.

Or, perhaps the recruiting services aren't all their cracked up to be....
How many dbs go untested in highschool and do not attend rivals camps ???? Even the dbs that get tested seldom face div 1 talent. So, what do the services measure when the measure nothing.

I think it is extremely important for PSU to hold as many camps as possible and for the coaches to continue to assist at the instructional camps at lower division schools around the country. You can't get what you don;t see.

Actually Garrett Taylor was very highly rated as well, although he did get a fairly significant injury that may have hurt his stock. At one point I believe he was more highly rated than Reid.

Yes, but Taylor was not in the list of talented young secondary players that we should see this year. That was what I was responding to above. Also, I doubt 4 stars like Hill and Hamlin are shaking in their boots when the secondary is manned almost entirely by players that were rated below them. It may just mean that they can come in and shine in this system rather than Penn State struck it rich with 75% diamonds in the rough. More likely that the system and coaching are the reason for primarily 2 and 3 star player success in our secondary.

If a kid is competitive enough to play for PSU...he is not afraid of competition. Anyone afraid of competition, I would hope they sign elsewhere in any event.
