Gilman's comments about Friday

I'd take a win in March over January, but boy, I really hope Nick shuts this clown up. Win a national title and then you can run your mouth, Gilly.

The thing that struck me was that he said he doesn't care if the team loses as long as he wins.

He kinda reminds me of Bull Hurley.

Seems to go negative an awful lot like his comments about Nick when comparing Nick to himself. Would think he would come off better if he said something like - he's started out his collegiate career pretty strong and I'm looking forward to the match-up Friday...

So Gilberg is currently 3-5 against PSU wrestlers? Yeah, you bet he has to win this one. I hope he pushes the pace and gets out of position a couple times.

Meh. He didn't say he doesn't care, he said it's his job to win his match -- if one of our guys said that, he would be focused on the things he can control.

His gum-flapping at the end of the match in Stallwater says he cares plenty about the team result.

But, yeah, the black hat fits him maybe a little too well.

Doesn't matter, PD3 thinks they're both bums.

Simply, this is a great opportunity for Nick...and win or lose, he'll learn a lot about himself. Then "the process" kicks in, and he and the coaches work on getting better.

On second thought, other than the word "victim", everything Gilman said is about right, objectively. He talks in a matter-of-fact way, as does Suriano. Other than the word "victim", I could see Suriano saying the same words about a match.

All the quotes from the article:

"I have to win this match no matter what," Gilman said. "It doesn't matter if we win this dual or lose the dual or the sky falls or it stays where it's at. I have to win this match no matter what. That's my mission."

"It's another opponent, another victim," Gilman said. "It is just another body, another human being someone has put in front of me. That gets me fired up, that's all I need."

"We'll see how tough he is to take down. He's a strong kid, but he's a kid," Gilman said. "I don't know how tough he is on his feet. I'm known for wrestling on my feet -- I have been doing it for five years in the college arena. He has been doing it for a month or two."

"I say let's do it," Gilman said. "If you want to dance, let's dance."

You can say one thing with confidence, he is the undisputed NCAA Champion in opponents motivational material. Write the check facemush, and then we'll see if you and the rest of the Hawks can get it cashed.

Smart to try to get into Suriano's head if you're Gilman (calling him "another victim" and "kid," questioning his toughness on his feet) but Suriano comes off as impenetrable on the mental front. He wrestles as consistently as anyone on the team. If he loses to Gilman it'll be because he's not quite there yet, not because Gilman got into his head.

I don't see anything out of line in those comments. He is focused on himself winning and I would like to think every wrestler at least somewhat has that mind set. He didn't call out the PSU program and say they were a bunch of back peddling cowards. I still try to envision Alex Derringer running backward from a hawkeye.

Who isnt?!
Classic bad movie that was fun to watch.

I think Suriano probably respects Gilman's attitude because it's exactly the same as Suriano's own.

THIS exactly!! I watched Nick all through High School..if you told me he was going to Penn State, I would have said you're out of your mind because he has the Iowa attitude all over him. I love Gilman's attitude and how he wrestles, and I was super stoked when Nick verballed to PSU..was a shocker to be honest

If Nick can squeak out a win, or even lose tough by a point or two, he will be in TG's head at B1G's. Bigtime.

I propose we replace the weekly link to Foley's column with a weekly link to Gilman's unfiltered thoughts. I personally would enjoy Gilman more and find less to object about.
At least we know that if Skynet went active and machines starting hunting humans, Gilman would be in the subway tunnel hatching plans with John Conner. Foley would be a human camp guard for the machines to keep the human rabble in line.

Reminded of last year where IMar said something to the effect that no one could match his pace, probably thinking he was the vet getting inside the rookie's head by dictating the terms in advance, and was then wholly unprepared for Nolf.
Martinez's comments last year felt like he was telling Nolf to not push pace because he couldn't keep up. It was just such a weird thing to say -- to tell the opponent how not to wrestle. Imagine someone telling Ed Ruth to not even try the crossface cradle, or telling Zain to not bother throwing in legs.

When was the last time you heard someone say the Jersey guy was the cool, calm, collected one?
There is something austere and old-school throwback about Suriano. If we want to tie him to a background of some sort, we need to go further back than Jersey. We need to think of him as a veteran Centurion. He is a guy who *will* calmly complete his mission.

Okay, I can see it.

In my opinion, he would end up being more of a Darryl type from red dawn. He also comes across as "farm" Hershel from TWD too.

Nice! I was just watching Red Dawn last night. It's on my DVR and just watched up to after the initial fight near the campfire between Jed and Daryl and before Robert's initiation into hunting. "You're just a bunch of goddamn kids!"

Robert drinking blood from his first kill is hilarious- "It wasn't that bad, it wasn't that bad"

Classic 80s cheese! Oh, and, one of my classic youthful crushes (Lea Thompson). Drool.

I like to point that Nick has been taken down once this year. If you add that to the number of times taken down in High School the number is 1.

Zain hasn't used the "Bow & Arrow" this year too much...I think Sorenson would make a fine looking Bow & Arrow.

Not that it matters much, but I read that Suriano got taken down, once, in his Freshman year of High School and his opponent actually got 2 nearfall points off of it. It was at the start of a match that Nick ended up winning by Fall.

he's given up 1 TD this season, so 1 TD given up in college

he gave up 1 TD in 4 years of HS competition.

It was in the quarters of the 2012 Beast of the East, when he was a freshman, and facing Tommy Aloi of Forest Park HS (VA). Riding Time got it mostly correct, in that Nick gave up the TD and 2 NF, to trail 0-4. Nick ended up winning the match, 9-7. I posted a video of the match last spring. I probably could find it if I had more time -- here's an article about the match (CLICK HERE).

If Gilman is trying to say he has the upper hand right because he's a veteran with more experience then I kinda have to agree with that. So yes Thomas, if you beat him you should be thankful you're not wrestling a Nick Suriano with more years and matches under his belt.
