Hi all, Michigan fan and alumnus here. I have posted before, and am not trying to troll.

Just wanted to wish you best of luck this year. The Big Ten East is getting a bit ridiculous in terms of talent. I think both fan groups are very excited about their teams. If we beat Florida, the white out game may be an enormous one! I will be there, and in our group from NYC we have a Penn State graduate.

My question is: how are you feeling about your offensive line this year? I think our only chance is to pressure and create turnovers with Gary/Hurst and some of the youngsters that are developing. I am not thrilled with Speight, he is decent but the QBs waiting in the wings (Peters and McCaffrey) are increasingly enticing. We have great skill position talent developing, but we lost a huge tight end (Asiasi) in a transfer, and that will really hurt our run game this year. I think most of our fan base is minimizing how important he was going to be. I am not convinced Speight can win big road games for us (see Iowa and Ohio State last year), and we will have to rely on our defense in the biggest games this year.

For us, the upcoming season will only be a success if we can beat OSU at home. Losing three in a row to them, two at home, would be pretty crushing regardless of what else happens, unless it still means we win the big ten title. Our best chance to field a playoff caliber team, which I really think we had last year, is in 2018 when our offense and defense will both be pretty stacked.

I hesitate to give an opinion about your team, but here it goes: to me, a successful season (big 10 title or not) will mean this 2018 great class of yours will completely stick, and you will be primed to be a national contender for years. You will also then continue to close the talent gap on OSU, as we are trying to do too. I am sure you will be a contender regardless, because I cannot see you losing to Pitt/Iowa/MSU at all, and you will be favored against us and Northwestern (which to me are the only games with more than a 30% chance for you losing besides OSU). I was wrong about Franklin, I really thought he was not a good coach at this time last year. I still have my doubts about his late game management, but he clearly is a top representative and recruiter for a university.

There will certainly be some great battles in the years to come! Best of luck.

Our offensive line should be good this year. We may have an OL that has all five guys with starting experience, which is new for us. It should also be one of the biggest lines in PSU history with a couple of guys being at or above 350 and no one under 310-315.

Thanks, well that is not too encouraging for my squad. We have great DL talent this year in terms of starters (Gary/Hurst/Mone/Winovich), but depth is very inexperienced.

That's not to say that we will be dominant, but this should be our best OL in quite some time.

You should get an award for the longest, non-troll like post, by an opposing fan. I mean that in a very positive way. I'm surprised you didn't get more replies. I had a long day and can barely keep my eyes open, so I will not say much more other than to thank you for classy post. I wish more visitors were like you.

Thank you for this. I think many fans of great programs and universities are more similar than they think. The internet makes it hard to prevent a handful of trolls from challenging that, almost like a few rowdy opposing fans being in every stadium section at once. Or maybe I am just an optimist! Either way best of luck on your top recruiting class and I will check back in before our game in October.

Thanks for stopping by. Classy post. As others have said, barring a rash of injuries, this will be the best OL in years at PSU. This offense has the potential to be scary good; more potentially elite offensive skill players than PSU has ever had. If the Defense stays healthy, should also be solid (but not elite). Definitely can't afford injuries at LB, in particular.

Lots to be excited about with PSU's upcoming season. As for Michigan, I recognize you have a ton to replace, but also realize you have no shortage of blue chip talent in the wings. Will be interesting to see how quickly this talent develops. I have a question re: Michigan fans perception of job Harbaugh is doing. Major missed opportunity in not winning Big 10 last year. Can't see you winning title this year. Perhaps you're primed again for 2018 season, but would imagine there'd be huge pressure on Harbaugh going into 2018 season.

Classy post and thanks for stopping by.

I'm also surprised you didn't get more responses but it's probably due to a number of our core posters in Happy Valley rather than a lack of interest. The board has been quiet this weekend.

I know the prevailing wisdom on your board is BWI has a bunch of crazy "cult-like" followers, but really it's no different than around any other big football tradition, which you seem to understand. People around here are pretty close in thinking and good at circling wagons, so if you're taking shots we're gonna shoot back. Your post is refreshing for that reason.

I also think most of your brethren (at least in the Fort) don't have a healthy respect for this team yet especially since the games have been so lopsided the last few years. It's completely understandable, the smart ones know this will be a very tough game for you. McSorley and Barkley will keep us in every game, especially at home........I'd say even with the likes of an Alabama (the talent is truly there).

I think you're right that this game will probably be very tight and competitive. Franklin has a knack of circling-but-not-circling specific games on the schedule he really wants to win. All the pub and communication to the team and the media is all "one week at a time" and for the most part it's true, but he's said several times this year there are a few "key" things these players haven't done. They haven't won a National Championship and they haven't beaten "certain" teams in the Big10, which I believe, is a direct reference to Michigan. Franklin is good at achieving key goals and Michigan, even though unstated, is one of those goals.

Everyone is talking about the OL, so no need to add much but yes, it's a legitimate 2 deep and a true strength, which we haven't seen in at least 6 years. The starters are very legit with 2 or 3 potential NFL'ers. Limegrover is the real deal, terrific coach and person.

Good luck to you and wear your Michigan gear proudly, you'll find most very receptive and willing to engage in a friendly manner and welcome you to their tailgates. I agree with you, Michigan is a peer school, both with athletic and academic traditions, and one we very much enjoy beating! LOL.

Best of luck.

Lol, thank you for this and appreciate the honesty! And it is also nice to hear about the friendly tailgating, it is my first visit to Happy Valley and really looking forward to it. Yes, I agree most Michigan fans are for some reason penciling in the game as a win, due to a perceived significant coaching advantage. I think people have underestimated Franklin the past few years. I also think he likes that, and can totally see him having a clear major goal of winning the white out game this year. I hope we do not continue to underestimate him and what he is building. There are signs already that we are aware of the yearly battles to come - we literally do not want any corners under 6'1" anymore, and I have to think a big part of that is your down-field passing game.

On a side note, I have read your board for many years, but rarely participate either here or on the Michigan sites. It has always been interesting to me how most fans of institutions like ours are so similar, and yet think that they are so different.

To the other poster's question, I think the fan perception of Harbaugh is still unchanged overall. He is eccentric, yes, but he has good people around him and the fact that so many want to play for and coach with him makes most fans feel comfortable, along with his passion for Michigan and football in general. Yes, last year was an enormous missed opportunity to change the narrative (especially with OSU) right away, but most intelligent fans understand that only a small handful of plays kept us from a good chance at a playoff birth. I do think another 3 loss season, if it includes OSU, will start to increase the pressure more. But those of us that sat through Rich Rod (era has been removed from my brain like Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind) and Hoke (smiling and shaking hands with Dantonio after getting beat downs was quite amazing, and not in a good way) appreciate the key things Harbaugh has brought back that we were always most proud of: a more national brand, and a style of play in line with what we had for decades, with the ability to produce NFL talent at every position. The one big concern is our lack of offensive line development, as we figured by year 3 it would be more advanced. I am not an Alabama fan, but think about how so many games they are up 3 to 0 in the second quarter, but you know that the other team literally has no chance to win, as the opponent will inevitably wear down and the running game kick into high gear, matched with a tough defense to get points on. That style is what I hoped we were building slowly towards, with the dream of adding to it a Harbaugh-coached downfield passing game, but the loss of certain linemen each year (like Isaiah Wilson) has strained that development.

First time huh? Good. Hope for good weather, plan an extra day and do the creamery and the strip on main street for shopping, food and drinks. True college town and everything's fairly close together.

Also, get to your seats before gametime and experience the hair-raising "we are" chant just before kickoff. After that you'll know what you're in for! LOL. (Had some Iowa fans tell us that last year, just had to use it here.)

You've currently lost 5 in a row to Ohio Sate, and 12 of 13.

He was talking about three in a row with JH as the coach. He was talking football respectfully this entire thread

Yeah, that was obvious that he was talking about the JH era.

A completely unnecessary back-handed comment by Judge Smails, especially given the nice tenor of this thread prior.

Thanks for the classy post. Enjoy your time in Happy Valley...but not too much

We are being far to nice to our Michigan visitor.

Honestly, you should expect a "whiteout" beat down. Harbaugh has far to many moving parts to replace to win this game. The Penn State Oline will be dominate this year, and wouldnt be surprised if Barkley runs for 200 against Michigan's depleted defense. The game will be a high scoring affair for Penn State, and its doubtful UM will be able to keep up. Your best bet is for you to lick your wounds, and come back strong in '18.

Penn State is good enough to win in Columbus, and has a very good chance to be in the playoff, Michigan not so much.

Descriptive.

You've really quieted down on the Franklin bashing. I guess being 100% wrong about something is a humbling experience.

Coach Franklin does not deserve to be bashed for his performance in 2016.

He definitely under-achieved in both 2014 & 2015. He should have been bashed for those years.

To tie it into the topic at hand --- he blew a game against terrible Brady Hoke! Thanks to an incredibly dumb fake punt call. Not to mention the "snatch defeat from the jaws of victory" losses to Randy Edsall and Tim Beckmann --- who are arguably WORSE coaches than Hoke.

Franklin under-achieved his first 2 years at Penn State. It is what it is - I wasn't

We've been over it a thousand times. Poor recruiting during the sanction years before JF arrived. Reduced scholarship numbers. Horrible offensive line requiring moving two defensive linemen who STARTED. 8 scholarship OL in total. But you ignore all of that and keep pumping the bullshit.

Joyner remembers O'Brien midway through his tenure - and before any of the NCAA sanctions had been rolled back by the Mitchell commission - analyzing what he thought would be the nadir of future seasons:

"He said, 'Looking at the scholarships and where we are, [2014] is going to be the bottom year. I think we can be 7-6 but that's about it.'

"And sure enough, James was 7-6 in his first year, exactly as Bill had predicted. I don't think I ever told James that Bill said that. But I kept coming back to that privately. I thought 7-6 was a really solid year."

Anyone who actually watched the games in 2014 and said "Penn State is not more talented than any of Michigan, Maryland, or Illinois" is not a smart football fan.

We should have won all those games. Franklin blew them ALL with his crappy coaching.

As for O'Brien predicting a 7-6 season --- he was sand-bagging to help out the new guy. Setting the bar low. We had a rather talented team in 2014 that also had a weak schedule --- O'Brien would have gotten that team to 9 wins and the Outback Bowl or such. Franklin just barely got us to bowl eligibility (he almost blew the game at Indiana too, which would have left us at 5-7).

Nice post BassBraylon, thank you. As documented above, UM has been dominated by Tressell and Meyer in The Game and I wonder how long patience will last till Harbaugh finally beats Meyer. Last year was to be Michigan's year with all those returning seniors and Peppers final year in college but it just didn't happen for whatever reason. Best of luck to UM as well.

The same crappy coaching that enabled him to win the Big Ten with one (1) First Team All Big Ten selection.

"Joyner remembers O'Brien midway through his tenure -".... Reading comprehension.

We didn't win the B1G in 2014. I didn't say CJF was a crappy coach in 2016 - I said he was a crappy coach in 2014.

Definitely sand-bagging, as we were 4-2 at the half-way point of 2014, with upcoming games against Maryland, Indiana, Temple and Illinois (we were favorites in ALL of them).

You can

You can say Brady Hoke could not Coach but to say that we were more talented than Michigan in 2014 is flat our wrong.
