Cassar is such a teaching moment for young people, about a lot of values we pay lip service to, but don't live so much: perseverance; sacrifice; determination; faith in oneself, etc.
I'm happy for this fine athlete because he shows us all the way . . .
I often tell this story to anyone who will listen . . . of the gold medalist in the pistol competition in 1936 -- a Czech army officer -- who won the competition shooting with his right hand.
Well, in the Second World War, in combat, in service of his country, he lost his right arm . . .
But won the first Olympics after the war, shooting with his left hand.
If you believe in the Lord, stay humble, and work hard, you can achieve great things . . .
I'll close with Jimmy Valvano's favorite exhortation, which he said he heard in a sermon by an evangelical preacher at a State Fair:
God must love ordinary folks . . . 'cause he made so many of them. But just you look around you at the incredible things ordinary folks do every day.
