Football Grunkemeyer offers his thoughts on the top 5 B1G QBs this season

Looks about right although I'd probably have McCord higher and not because he's better than the others but mostly due to the unbelievable weapons he'll have around him which will get bigtime notice - right or wrong at the end of the year.

If it is based on results thus far, my list would :
1) JJ McCarthy
2) Tanner M.
3) C. MacNamara
4) Tua T.
5) K. McCord
6) D. Allar

Potential means very little right now. The top 4 have shown they can play @ this level and consistently produce.

Wisky vs Michigan in the ccg? Sounds legit.

Wisky intrigues me this year. Transformation from a run heavy brusing offense to some sort of Longo Air Raid is a full 180. The portal makes the transition easier, but this is still a bump up in competition for Fickell. Teams that he used to have circled as the biggest game of the year are now weekly matchups.

Iowa does too. McNamara is maybe a good fit for them, but he has no known non-TE weapons and Brian Ferentz running the show.

His weapons are not "unbelievable". Allar has better running backs and tight ends actually, and although Harrison is one of the top 5 wide receivers in the nation, the others are not appreciably better than ours or Michigan's.

If Allar can crack top three in the division, I will be happy. I think he'll end up outside the top five in the Big Ten behind JJ McCarthy, Cade MacNamara, Taulia Tagovailoa, Tanner Mordecai, and Hudson Card. I think Allar will duke it out with McCord for sixth or seventh. Given the state of receiver position and the offensive line, I don't see how he'll be a top five player this year. If he does, great. Card is my wildcard. Depending on how the coaching transition goes, he could be all Big Ten and blow all kinds of records out of the water this season.

Lmao. You continually expose yourself as a troll....Allar is the number ONE qb recruit in the nation. Last 3 or 4 of them are Stroud, Fields, Lawrence, and the kid last year at Alabama. Tanner freaking Mordecai isn't better than Drew Allar bud.

It will be interesting to watch the Wisconsin transition, especially from an OL blocking scheme perspective.
Can anyone comment on the complexities of the change on blocking schemes and if their current OL talent can quickly transition?

Seriously? Both WR Harrison and Egbuka have been projected in every future 2024 NFL draft as 1st rounders and ESPN recently labeled OSU's RB room as the deepest in America. Henderson had a super freshman year in 2021 (1600 yards) but was injured most of 2022 and #2 - Pryor - was out the whole year. The load fell onto Williams and true freshman Hayden who Tennessee tried hard to get him to transfer back home. All 4 will be back in 2023

Here's the recent 247 projection for top offenses in 2023 and they have OSU #1. It's not their offense that's been there issue the last couple of years

Actually, you are the troll. Allar is a first year starter. And personally, I don't give a darn if he was the "number one recruit in the nation". He is a first year starter with little talent at the receiver position, an offensive line that will likely be above average and three legit top ten teams on the schedule. This doesn't mean that he won't eventually be the best in the conference, but this year? I doubt he cracks the top five.

Na. You're the troll
That's big facts.

Phil Longo doesn't run a typical air-raid offense. His is very different. Mike Leach dominated the air-raid domain but the Pirate was pass, first, second and third in all situations. He uses a spread zone blocking system exclusively. The linemen lined up wider than average and blocked whoever was in front of them allowing the QB to clearly see rushers that weren't blocked and get the ball off to whoever was open.

Compared to Leach, Longo runs a more unique variant of the air-raid offense which is far more balanced. When running the football, they use a dynamic man blocking scheme, not unlike Michigan. They are well positioned to leverage this against the majority of the their schedule. Wisconsin probably won't look much different against Buffalo, Washington State, Georgia Southern, Purdue, Rutgers, Indiana, Northwestern and Minnesota. They will run early and often but the running game will be more dynamic. On passing downs, Longo used a pure zone blocking scheme last year at UNC. Very different but they don't use the spread alignment Leach preferred. The zone scheme is pretty simple.

I think they will struggle against the better lines they play, namely Illinois, Iowa and Ohio State if they go with a pass heavy game plan. Last year, some games were run heavy, some were pass heavy, some were balanced. He is very unpredictable. Overall, I think they are set up for a 5 and 0 start before hitting Iowa, Illinois and Ohio State in back to back to back weeks. After that, they have Indiana, Northwestern, Nebraska and Minnesota. That three game stretch will make or break their season. Iowa plays zone blocking really well giving Iowa the edge out west in my mind.

Right now he is better than Allar based on his record and stats. Hopefully Allar outperforms all of them by the end of the year. That would be fabulous. No one is doubting his potential but there is some distance from potential to performing as the best B1G QB.
