Hack to the Eagles

I dont understand why he wouldnt play this week.

it doesn't make much sense to sign him, "develop him" for 3 weeks and release him. on the other hand he didn't play in the last game and there were only 3 QBs.

It makes perfect sense if you need a "camp arm" to enable full practice while Wentz and Foles are both out with injuries. The Eagles already have their three roster QBs - Wentz, Foles and Sudfield. Anyone else is either a developmental reach or a human "juggs" machine for training camp.

I wonder if they get paid anything for being on the team in training camp. Do they at least get living expenses?

I’ve thought about this since they signed hack. I really think they have him in case they end up trading foles if a QB gets hurt, a la Bradford a few years ago. If they do that, it goes Wentz, Sudfeld, Callahan and Hack on the PS. I know it’s vanilla O vs vanilla D, but Sudfeld has shown he’s a better than average backup. He’s no foles, but he’ll do.

I can even see them keep foles and Sudfeld, cut Callahan and put Hack on the PS and only carry 2 QBs on gameday.

Here’s the rub: I think we all know that Hack has struggled as a pro. The Eagles are a true contender. If they need their #3 QB, can they really win with Hack? I don’t think they can and they’d likely weigh any Foles trade with that in mind.

because he isn't going to play for them, and they know it

the opportunity for him isn't with the Eagles, it's that the Eagles coaches say good things about him if another team- one that needs a #3 QB- calls

Agree with earlier comment. With Wentz being brought along slowly and Foles dinging his shoulder the Eagles needed another camp arm. Hack is gonna be gone in a week or so unfortunately.

He makes like $1000 a week plus gets a residence inn stay. It’s no expense to the eagles to give him a look. Absolutely no risk. They cut him and they lose 4 grand. Big deal.

Are NFL players paid to practice during training camp?

Yes, they are paid, but it’s a pittance compared to regular season salaries.

Per league rules, a first-year NFL player receives a weekly rate of $1,000 during training camp. Veterans (more than 1-year NFL experience) receive $1,800 per week. All players have their room & board covered by the team, so there are no expenses for the players, including meals, housing, and transportation (when traveling with the team, including the team charter to-and-from camp).

Next year [2017] the weekly rate will skyrocket (tongue planted firmly in cheek) to

$1,075 per week for 1st-year players
and $1,900 for veterans.

For the rookies who are fresh out of college and trying to make an NFL roster, a total of $3,000 for three weeks in sunny Oxnard, California may seem like pretty good money, especially when all their expenses are covered. But if these young guys can make the 53-man roster, they will see their weekly rates go up markedly.

Let’s use a rookie as an example.

The NFL’s minimum base salary for rookies in 2016 is $450,000.00. There are 17 weeks in the NFL season (including the bye week). So take the base salary and divide it by 17 to determine the weekly rate. A minimum wage rookie makes $26,470.59 each week of the regular season.

The rates go up for each year a player is in the NFL (e.g., minimum base salary for a 10-year veteran is $985,000 which is $51,941.18 weekly).

If a young player doesn’t make the 53-man roster, there’s still a chance he can be added to an NFL team’s 10-man practice squad.

Players on the practice squad
receive $6,900 per week;

so if they stick on the team for the
full 17-weeks of the regular season,

they can earn $117,300.

Me too. Callahan flat out stinks. I have no doubt in my mind Hack is better than him

That's interesting to know. A grand a week and he has few expenses. Sounds good to me. He didn't play at all tonight but I'm guessing he'll get his chance next week.
