After watching Cael's interview yesterday I believe that Mark is actually a lock for the semis. It's going to be nail biting every inch of the way but it is actually a lock. We will see the Mark who tech'ed Nolf last summer and won five straight at the junior worlds. So... the Valencia match up. I am posting this thread to report a few reasons for optimism.
1) Zahid gets in on an inside single in the first period and lives to regret it.
2) Mark scores riding points or more from the top that Zahid cannot answer.
3) Mark is able to control the pace and handles the pressure better.
4) the aforementioned points are just ways that I could come up with to see Mark coming out on top. Mark wins this and I do not see PSU failing to bring home the championship. Mark wins this and he has a better than even chance of beating Jordan or Realbuto. I want Mark to win this! Thoughts?

Mark has wrestled A LOT better comp...I think Mark will beat him and by 4 or 5 points....LISTEN 1 match at a time....

If Mark gets by Zahid, the finals should be easier. BUT, that's a big if. Mark is one tremendous talent. So is Zahid, and he's a lot bigger. I'd love for Mark to beat him, and he could, but I'm not picking it. AND, he's got to get by Epperly first.

My thoughts are, go Realbuto! I think Mark can get there, but to win it, it needs to be Realbuto, not that power lifter with the fake tan.

He's longer, not necessarily bigger. Now, Crutchmer and Jordan, are bigger. Than everyone, really.

No idea how you reached that particular conclusion, and with such conviction, from Sanderson's press conference.

The Mark who teched Nolf in FS means absolutely nothing for folkstyle matchup with Zahid. Not even in the slightest bit comparable
I agree with this. Add to it - there was a significant weight difference in that match as well.
The only thing you can be sure of when it comes to Nationals is that it is highly unpredictable.

So... does anyone have any thoughts about how they stack up in the "three positions"? ( I will take it one match at a time Thur-Sat)

I have not doubted Marks ability to beat: Kocer-Kent-and Epperly. At the beginning of the year I would have bet good money that he would rip their arm off and beat them with it. The Mark that was wrestling unattached was wrestling free the Mark wrestling for PSU has acted like the weight of the world was on his shoulders. What I saw at the interview was a coach who was getting his kid ready to wrestle free, which is to say the opposite of stiff and cautious. That Mark will make the semis.

I think Mark has a tough draw. Every match is going to be tough. Kocer has some big wins this year. Kent is not a gimme. He learns as well. I think he will do it but I think Marky Mark is in for a physical tournament. I think he will beat Epperly similarly to what Bo did last year.

Agreed. Unlike some other PSU kids, Mark has no easy matches on his path.

Am I alone in my thinking that I would rather have valencia than bojo/RB as a qtr and semi?

Valencia undefeated and a FS stud for sure.
But he has some close matches w Ramos x2, RB, harvey, amine that suggest mark is right there.

I guess this is more my heavy sway of mark over epperly in the qtrs maybe.

Well, yeah, getting the five seed is better than getting the six haha

You are not alone. BoJo and RB are mature competitors Valencia like Mark is having his first go. I was just looking for comments on style/strengths/and weaknesses while I sit biting my nails waiting for Thursday.

Spyker ran a 2-hr analysis of Zahid's schedule and determined that Realbuto is not as good as Jordan, Preisch, Kent, and Crutchmer despite his wins over them.
This year ? No i don't think so....Hey the kid is really tough but he has not beaten anyone really good this year....They do not seem to improve much at Arizona State....Oh well we will see soon....

Mark is a tournament wrestler , get through a few rounds and could get on a roll.

Umm, yes, this year. Zahid is a true freshman, so his win over Realbuto was this year. Realbuto beat all of those guys this year. Realbuto is the #2 seed this year. His only loss this year is to Zahid.

I believe Zahid is a redshirt freshman this year.

No, you are not alone. I'd rather have anyone, other than Bojo. If Realbuto can take care of him, we have a shot for the top of the podium.

74 this year sort of reminds me of 25 last year: I had that feeling that as long as Gilman found a way against Nato, if Nico could navigate his way in, that he would get it done on Saturday night.

Sort of feel that same way this year in respect to Mark, with Realbuto against Jordan.

Mark has a tough draw, imo. Let him get that 1st bout under his belt. Really don't care much after that who he faces. Guess I'm one that feels for the opponent, as they go up against the talented PSU freshman.

Roar I think even with a hole in your glass it would remain half full. You have kept many a poster from going thelma and louise these past couple of year.

I agree with Roar. I think we see a more confident and aggressive Hall. I have just been waiting for him to take it to another level. Saw a little of it in the 1st period against bojo. I think we see it this weekend.

I think Realbuto will beat Jordan....He and Dean train very hard with Dake....Dake teaches them a lot of little tricks to win big matches too....No i am not a Dake fan but it's true....

Basically that is how you beat Jordan: Guile. That's how Isaac did it, that's how Realbuto does it.

1) they were wrestling
2) my sense is that Nolf did not want to loose.
3) Hall v Valencia will be won from neutral.

You do realize BoJo trains in the room with World team member Tervel Diagnov, and rolls with Kyle Snyder/Kolllin Moore/Myles Martin.. Right? I mean Dake is great but I would hardly call him a decisive factor Jen comparing OSU's room and it's quality. I've also read that BoJo works a ton with Logan Stieber with top wrestling, especially their power half series and the like. He's not bad either.

He better work on his neutral game for Nationals: That's where matches are won and lost at the highest level.

You are one lucky SOB, you get to watch Cornell practices too!!! I am sure you get into some Iowa sessions also, how does Marinelli look against Kemerer?;)

One of the open mats predictors, actually predicts Mark to win the gold.

It could happen.

Epperly is tough on top but i think Mark will win the take down battle....I would not pick bottom on Epperly....Mark is the BEST scrambler in the weight class !!!!

No I would say you could look at the winning TD and see how Mark's neutral game in freestyle was relevant to this outcome. Also winning matches is Winning matches!

Zahid looked really good. It was my first time seeing him.

But Mark is just awesome. Wonder if we'll see him grow into a full 174 next year. DT commented he's between a 65 and 74. Obviously he's a finalist his true freshman season and a bit smaller, but damn that kid is talented!!
