Haven't seen a whole lot of improvement in the OL

and Paris Palmer needs work. He has gotten beat a number of times. He also looks like he needs to put on some weight.

Totally agree.I see absolutely no imorovement since last year. Palmer is getting burned time and again.

I sure hope our D-line turns out to be dominant.

Otherwise, this is going to be another long year.

Franklin needs to turn Donovan going pro early as a positive in recruiting elite OL talent just like Calipari does at UK with top 10 high school hoopers.

Franklin said he needs to get bigger. It would be nice to redshirt him

but I don't expect that to happen.

It doesn't work that way in college football.

Nobody is a good offensive lineman until their third year, either as a junior or a redshirt soph. They just aren't big enough.

Palmer is a work in progress for sure. But OL is the area that requires

the most cohesion and teamwork, and therefore is an area that can make the most progress between now and the 2015 season. But I also don't see how Palmer can have success with his body build. There is only so much strength and weight that an athlete can put on in 4 months. I have seen the reviews on Wright, currently playing Guard. He already is a big strong dude so maybe he will end up at LT... I'm going to try and keep an eye out for Brosnan (#75 for Blue) and Hull (71 for white) in 2nd half to see what other options there are for LT.

I thought we decided he can't redshirt, because he burned that

redshirt after high school. He only has two years.

Best case is Palmer eats and lifts 24x7 for next 4 months, but I am

not counting out a redshirt for him if he does not get considerably bigger by August. Wright could move back to OT with the grad transfer coming in for Fall practice.

I believe i've heard it both ways, some saying he has 3 to play 2

.. But most don't see a redshirt for him due to the still lack of OL depth. I'd rather burn Jenkins redshirt and let Palmer bulk up for a year. Jenkins could redshirt in 2016. Slide Wright back to OT for another big body at Tackle. Guard depth will improve with the grad transfer showing up for Fall practice.

I'd love to see Palmer redshirt this year.

With 30 lbs of muscle on him he would be all Big Ten. He seems to be athletic and a prototype frame for a left tackle. The only thing he is missing is the mass/strength to put his skills to use.

Yes, for the longer term team success, and Palmer's eventual shot

at the NFL, a redshirt would allow him to hopefully be 310 by next spring and have 2 seasons to play at a high level, hopefully all B10. He won't be all B10 this year from what I saw today. The tosu DE's will blow through him this year. Jenkins may have a better chance to play well this year.

two mistakes there ...

1st, Palmer doesn't have a redshirt available. He has 2 years of eligibility of remaining, and 2 years to use them. So he's not redshirting.

2nd, Jenkins doesn't have a better chance to play well this year. He does have the potential to be a very good OT in a couple of years, but he's nowhere near ready to play at this time, and he's nowhere close to Palmer at this point.

Palmer does have some things to work on, and PSU is trying to add some bulk to him before September.

I've heard it reported both ways on Palmer's status for a redshirt, and

Jenkins has the size to play right now. We all realize that Palmer is the chosen one to improve the Tackle positions, but B10 D Linemen will put him on his butt play after play. He's really looks like a power forward trying to play OL. I don't see how he could bulk up enough in 4 months to be a strong enough player for B10 action.

Time will tell if Jenkins will be the better player, and Fanklin will do everything he can to redshirt him. Even last year as dire as the OL was he redshirted all 4 true freshmen. But really, only Wright had the size to play last year, of those 4. I'm hoping Jenkins does redshirt, but right now he looks much more the part of a power conference OT than Palmer. Size alone can not make up for technique and experience, but if we have a power forward protecting Hack's blind side it will be ugly.

Mangiro playing RT and Nelson LT would be much more likely than Jenkins

starting.

Tom is correct. Paris Palmer sat out the 2012 season at Lackawanna with a torn ACL then played two seasons there. He has no redshirt year available.

Re: I've heard it reported both ways on Palmer's status for a redshirt, and

There is no way I want a true freshman who dropped from a top-50 recruit to a 3-star in less than a season starting or playing significant minutes next season, especially on our quarterback's blindside.

Re: Mangiro playing RT and Nelson LT would be much more likely than Jenkins

Did he sit out at Lackawanna or sit out at home? If he did not enroll it would be like Wright who went to a prep school for a year before enrolling at PSU.

I don't see Jenkins playing this year. My comment was that he looks more ready to be a B10 OT than Palmer, who looks like he played power forward and is making the transition to football.....

Re: I've heard it reported both ways on Palmer's status for a redshirt, and

That's right. Let the recruiting vultures that rate the kids determine who should play this year and who shouldn't. Just line up the team starting with the the kids that were the highest rated coming out of H.S. and go from there.....

Obviously CJF thinks highly of Palmer, or he would not be running with the first team. But your comment about Jenkins high school ratings is worthless.

Palmer tore his ACL in high school, and redshirted his freshman year in

JUCO. That is why he cannot redshirt here.

At least, that is my understanding.

Then the only thing to do is to FEED HIM ......

... He looks like he could add 40 pounds before he would look like a B10 OT for Iowa or Wisky.... The kind that get drafted high.

It isn't worthless in that everyone that saw him has said he's all potential at this point. He dropped like a bomb due to mediocre play at the high school level, but your post suggested trotting him out against teams like Michigan State and Ohio State. Did you see what Ohio State's defense did to Oregon and Bama? If Jenkins is his LT then I'll go ahead and tell them to reserve a bed at Mt. Nittany Medical Center for Hack now.

Then why did we waste a scholarship on a juco that can't play?? Why not

Redshirt a true frosh and have him around for 5 yrs???

Re: I've heard it reported both ways on Palmer's status for a redshirt, and

I'm not suggesting that Jenkins is the answer for 2015. But he couldn't look worse than Palmer did yesterday, and he has the size such that he is less likely to get bowled over than Palmer. Obviously CJF thinks highly of Palmer and CJF prefers to redshirt all freshman OL players so I don't expect Jenkins to play in 2015. But Jenkins sure passes the looks test vs Palmer.

I'm hoping that if Palmer does not show up at 315lbs in August, and I don't think he can add 40 lbs of muscle in 4 months, that Wright or one of the other RS freshman kids gets the RT job and Nelson moves to LT.

And yes it is worthless to quote recruiting gurus. Jenkins has actually been practicing at PSU for 15 practices and right now CJF and his staff actually know his abilities and potential.

Obviously we need OL help ASAP and CJF/Hand believe a JC was

the quickest way to improve the OL.

They have stated that in the longer term they prefer to recruit out of H.S. and then have a deep group and play the upperclassmen that are physically mature. But you can't back date H.S. kids to get help for 2015.

We really needed 2 or 3 JC OL kids but they are hard to find. Look at Palmer. Some had him as the #1 JC OT and obviously he is not a plug and play high performer at this point.

Re: two mistakes there ...

Tom, maybe my "zero confidence" post was a bit too positive :)

Meant to be humerous.
