Postgame Thoughts

They don't have to be. They have to be good enough to beat USC, there.
With this OLine and running back tandem, we have a least part of the formula to beat USC, but we need to score points every time we get close. Missed field goals will not cut it.

I also worry about our pass defense, we need to get heat early and often.

A win is a win, regardless of how ugly and/or boring.

Need a kicker. Significantly impacted the outcome. The spread was probably correct if we have a kicker with a pulse.

Drew was a tad off. Not sure if the zone and bend but don’t break strategy threw him off but he wasn’t great. Also oddly felt like AK and JF lost trust in him on third and fourth day. He needs to handle the happy feet a good bit better.

OL and RBs are the bread and butter of this squad. This is exactly what we all envisioned when Allen/Singleton stepped on campus. Let’s focus on this strength and build the offense around it.

Tyler Warren is the best TE in the country.

I’ve been skeptical of Tom Allen but man these seconds halves don’t lie. It’s almost like he has no strategy until he sees what the offense presents in the first quarter or two and then he adjusts. Love what he’s doing with Carter as the roaming hybrid spy - crazy closing speed. And he finally made the adjustment on the quick slant!

Zane Durant is that dude. Talk about dominant out there.

The DL offsides has to stop. Barnes needs to be spoken to. Comical at this point.

Finally, is this team good enough to beat OSU? Ehh, not right now that’s for sure.
One comment. Against OSU, USC, and even Indiana, defensive adjustments cannot be delayed until the 2nd half.

USC has tall receivers who can high point the ball and run crisp routes.

LOL... Coach would scream "Hills" and you'd could hear the collective groan a mile away. Run up it. Run backwards up it. Crawl up it. Crab walk up it. Hop up it. Worm up it. Carioca up it.......
I did that to your girlfriend while you were crawling.

I think James Franklin shut Kotelnicki down and had them stick to the run. Similar to Iowa last year
ok, I don't know if this is true but on one of the video blogs, I believe it was bob flounders that said last year Kansas played Illinois and Kotelnecki had a game plan that relied on the running game to beat the Illini. Seems as if he pulled out the same plan this year.

TBH it wouldn't surprise me to see a repeat of the ground game against UCLA next week

Outside of Michigan '23 level dominance, I'm not sure what else you could ask for.

219 total yards allowed today. 75 on that 1st drive.

This team isn't without flaws, but I'd rather they gradually improve as the season goes. This game was semi-quazi "let's just run on them". Tough. Physical. Everything some said a Bielema team would be and wish Franklin was.

There is a lot more to like here than dislike.
Overallt they were good and certainly got stronger. My point is they start the game totally unprepared. Not saying they need to be perfect but we were so flat on the first drive. Raucous WO crowd cheering you on and just lay an egg.

Last year, AK avoided the interior DL of Illinois and ran outside off a lot of motion.

This year, we just ran. At them. Around them. 9 rush plays of 10+ yards (with multiple more in the 6-9 ypc range). We averaged 5.6 as a team.

I believe a lot of that is scripted plays designed to catch us off guard.

0 points after the that drive is nearly defensive perfection. And that's with some sloppy tackling and boneheaded penalties.

A lot of times, a team’s best drive will be their first drive; if you can shut that first drive down , it’s almost like a bonus. Other than the continued stupid penalties and the frustrating slant catches, every team in the country would’ve taken that defensive performance last night after the first drive.

Barnes isn't the problem. Defensive linemen are taught not to move until the ball is snapped. They are not to anticipate the snap!

Actually, they're taught to watch ball - once the C moves the ball, the ball must be snapped (it is illegal for C to simulate a snap by moving ball forward or moving ball slightly back and stopping...). Once the C starts moving the ball, it must be snapped, so DL watch ball.

Not to mention Allen,Singleton, and Warren just running over people.

Whatever happens this season, we have to savor our time watching Allen and Singleton play football. They're both fantastic players and just awesome human beings. Their love for the game comes out on every single play -- always smiling and having fun out there. Just reminds everybody what football should be about.

Warren is just unprecedented. I can't remember anything quite like him -- a TE/running back who can legitimately run the option with QB skills? That's crazy. I'm racking my brain, the only thing I can compare it to is maybe Jon Witman and Milne -- those guys could do so many things so well.

The OL run blocked very well, but maybe, the 2 injured guards are a concern. the freshman cousins ended up playing at right guard.
We are better and better stocked across the OL than anyone thought we could be this year But injuries are always a bad thing, if they keep piling up we will get real thin really quick.

Hopefully Wormley & Nelson's eyes will be OK and be ready to go for USC.
CJF said they were both poked in the eye.

Just wait until Warren hits a long post pattern. As the passer.

I'll give the other guy a little credit. He the rotund man always brings a good game plan and this year he has some talent to play his brand of ball and they play it very well. His QB is very good at what they do, and Illinois will have a good year. I hope they play Michigan (oops they do) I would like to see that one and I think it's in Illinois.

Not using injuries as an excuse but we have to play a bunch of young guys who are still making mistakes but getting better game by game. Often their speed and athleticisms are making up for some of their mistakes. They are getting better that's the important thing.

We get what should be another tune-up next Sat before heading to the coast and a big game out there.

As for Drew? Drew is Drew nothing new with him, the scheme he's playing in now makes him look much better although he has made some strides mentally. His throws are often just a little off, a little too high too low a little too wide a little too behind. I don't know how many catches were made yesterday that were a little behind the receiver that they caught but a few for sure. The receivers have been making some tough catches.

We are a very good team right now and they remind me of teams in the past who were great but had to grind and grit out some wins. Seems to me that's just the way it's going to be.
Hey wait a minute there Bucco! I got hammered for saying Drew had a long way to improve. He is better than last year but not playing like a third year five star QB should,

I wouldn’t say they’re flat, many teams script their first 15 plays or so and they come out looking like an offensive juggernaut and this happens a lot (not just to PSU). Then they have to go off script and they come back to earth.
Then write a longer script!🤷🏻‍♀️

Need to get some of those eye shields on the helmets apparently.
This is how we protected ourselves from eye pokes back in the day:

Maybe because his True Freshman season was almost a waste of his redshirt?

Saquon would have been in another world, but so would Singleton if he played a bigger percentage of the game. I like Allen, but he does slow our game down when he’s in…still successful, but we lose the big play potential.
Allen is one heck of a football player. Can make 3-5 yards out of nothing. He is tough and gets the difficult yards. In tight situations, he is the go to back. And he has earned it!

But 3-5 yards doesn’t get you down the field as fast as 9-10 and leads to lower scoring games….that’s all I’m saying.

right....the problem is that you have to also be consistent. People don't realize but when Barry Sanders suddenly retired, they actually had a better record the next season. Why? Barry is a HoFer but he was inconsistent. he'd get 13 yards from the 20 to the 33. Then he'd get 2 - 1 - and 5> punt. That is opposed to 4-4-4 and a first down. I love chunk plays but they aren't consistent. You have to chunk and be consistent to score points.

And the problem with 4-4-4 is one penalty or one incompletion or one missed block and it’s 4-4- punt.

Need it all.

Allen isn't a problem at all. He's just now getting healthy and in a good rhythm. The problem Sat was our own, penalties and some errant throws. On the passing he had guys getting pressure on him and in his face, so I don't want to lay too much at Alar's feet, (no pun intended) but he has to be more accurate in games like that. Clean up the penalties and that game is probably a blowout.
