Son is starting a ministry in West Dayton and his ministry partner bought a cheap house for them to live in. I was out there over the weekend working on the electrical. Need an HVAC contractor to install return air to second floor, heat duct to first floor bathroom, .....

Any referral would be appreciated

ha. good for you. Had a similar refrigerator story.

my fridge quit cooling while the freezer was fine. Called a repair guy who said that the thermostat is broken and wanted almost $500 to repair it. I told him I could get a new one for $1000 so forget it. The repair guy then says that there is a window between the freezer and fridge. The only coolant mechanism is in the freezer. The thermostat simply opens and closes the window between the freezer and fridge area, and turns on a fan. He suggested I just leave the window open, put a piece of tape over it to regulate the flow (about 1/3rd open) and just let the fridge part cool when the freezer part cools. The temp in the fridge won't be as constant, but should buy me a couple of months until I get a new fridge.

That's been over a year ago. Fridge is working great like this. I am sure I am spending a few more bucks a month in energy costs but haven't dropped a grand either.

Re: Funny.....

Thank.
I believe RickInDayton and DaytonBuck frequent the board...

I will be going to help rehab the house but prefer to work on issues where I already have expertise..

many guys just take what the cost of the parts are and double that to get a

labor rate. So if the part cost $250 Labor is $500 total $750. Done

Re: Funny.....

Ned, that was a pure dick move. Here you are worried about spending your money and you turn around and cost someone else money. Hope you didn't pat yourself on the back too hard.

As a contractor that pisses me off.

Labor rates are nobody's business but my own. I'll tell you what I charge per hour, but if someone asks me how I arrived at that number, I tell them to go pound sand. I don't bother the customer and ask them why they can't do the job their self so I expect the same courtesy.

Bottom line is this. You get what you pay for. Have someone come in and do a job for $50 and see what kind of results you get. The lower the price, the better chance that you hired an idiot.

Absolutely not .... I fully agree with TPSU_Lion

the guy quoted you a price. You are under no requirement to accept his price: you can either take it or leave it. Any contractor knows that if his price is too[/I] high, he is less likely to get the work.

But in setting up an appointment, you definitely implied that you were "taking his quote and offering him the work."

Sorry, but that was a dick move. Tell him at the beginning, "no thank you, I have decided I will have somebody else do this work.." The contractor would have fully respected that.

I live in Springboro just south of Dayton. We used Watkins Heating and Cooling after heat problem this winter and the home warranty company didn't fix issue the first time! Watkins comes highly rated...I imagine they would go to west dayton, depending on where.

Thanks.

I believe there are a number of you in Dayton that frequent this board.

Looking forward to getting out to Dayton for graduation. Was there last weekend helping with some electrical work on the house. Wow, I didn't realize how the some areas of Dayton were hit by the large manufacturing plants closing. I was out and about on Salem, going north to the Home Depot around noon, and there were very few cars on the road. HD parking lot had about 8 cars in it. Here in the Pittsburgh south hills there would have been traffic and lots of activity at the HD.....

Thanks again.
