High winds and a driving rain on Saturday

Wondering how the offense can function.

Regardless of the weather, we have a lot more weapons than does Northwestern. Also, a better defense. It’s definitely an unwelcome wildcard, but I don’t see it changing the outcome. That said, if you’re a betting man, it’s one more reason not to lay 14 points -- and to take the Under!

By the way, for what it’s worth, which is probably nothing three full days out, Weather Underground predicts the worst of the rain will occur in the 1:00-3:00 timeframe, which happens to be the majority of the game.

For those old enough to remember, the mention of “driving rain” may bring back shudders to those of us who saw Navy upset highly favored Penn State in a driving rainstorm in 1974. Still can’t forget it, but I don’t see it happening again Saturday. ((Knock on wood!))

I remember it well but remember: Navy is good in the water.

Accuweather says game temps at 72 or so, winds at 15 to 18 mph from the SW, and "occasional thunderstorms", rather than "heavy rain". It's possible the game could have a delay in it at some point.

I can remember sitting through the monsoon in 1996, I believe, when Tim Dwight ran wild and we lost. Could be mixing up the years as my memory isnt what it used to be but it was definitely Iowa and a torrential downpour the whole game.

Good. This saves me money.

My tentative itinerary was to fly out Sat morning, train to the game, train to town, dinner, train to airport, Home by 11:00.

This kind of adventure to Chicago has been probably a 10 year bucket list thing of mine. Maybe next time.

For the record, Navy in 1974, was nearly a torrential downpour and 45 mph winds. During that game, the Navy punter had an 88 yard punt, with the wind.

15-18 mph winds are a factor, but not comparable to either the 45 mph against Navy, nor the 35 mph during the 2008 loss at Kinnick to Iowa.

It COULD affect the crowd: Ryan field doesn't ordinarily sell out anyway, and I would guess total attendance will probably be in the 35,000 neighborhood.

Navy 1974 was the worst. I could hardly see the field. The guy behind me had an umbrella and the water rolled off onto the back of my neck.

"The Lions out-rushed Navy 267-87 and out-passed the Midshipmen 108-84. ``The big thing that kept Navy in the game was their errors - fumbles and missed field goals.'' Playing on a sloppy field, the Lions fumbled seven times - losing five - and all-American kicker Chris Bahr missed four field goals. His final miss was a 43-yarder with just 46 seconds left in the game.
Paterno wasn't about to blame the loss on the weather.
``It rained on both sides of the field,'' Paterno said. ``At least I think it did. I wasn't over on the Navy side of the field, but it looked like it was raining over there.''

If we had played Army or the Air Force that day, we win easily.

The Navy? Nope!

The weathermen don't know s**t.

The last two months we've barely gotten an inch of rain in the northwest suburbs and overnight last night we were to get six hours of rain....we got maybe six minutes.

We've got 65+ hours until kickoff so the weather forecasts will change about 65 times. Don't worry, be happy.

That's when we still had a track around the field. I stood on the track and watched that game.

Are you going to attend the game?

Wrong lake... and wrong month...But can’t pass up the reference.

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they called 'gitche gumee'
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy
With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty
That good ship and crew was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of November came early

MaconNitt and myself will be there in Sec 134 with ponchos and rain suits. Train up to Evanston and staying in Chicago. Weather looks like possible scattered showers and thunderstorms but dying out by noon 1pm. We'll be the guys in the Penn State gear! Hitting the Dryhop Brewery by where we are staying.

They better have the right shoes because NW will not cut the grass in order to slow the boys down. Early start, sloppy field and shoes will matter!

Twas a gale the likes had never been seen in these parts. The wind howled, the rain drove and dampened the spirits of our mighty lions, but the stalwart Navy boys stood strong. The pitched battle is talked about to this day as the gods of the ball of foot befuddled our boys with itis of fumble and the crooked kick. Those who witnessed this epic will forever regale the common folk of the challenge that our boys faced that day; the cold, the wind but the most terrible of all the ever-penetrating rain, oh that horrible rain! The rain and wind that never ceased!! The Navy boys, hardened by hours at the wheel, guiding their nighty vessels through wind and waves seemed immune to capriciousness of the gods of the foot, their grip strong and their eyes keen for the itis of fumble that afflicted our boys that day.

Believe the WaPo headline the next day was "Victory at Sea".

Also, expect a full six inch grass pig slop at Ryan field, for this game. Tricky Pat has been known to grow his grass out.

I was there for Navy 1974. Was soaked through to the bone. Roommate's underwear turned blue from her new jeans getting drenched. Sat with a friend from high school/PSU and I swear every umbrella nearby pitched the rain perfectly down his back. One of those games I'll never forget!

Penn State will bring their rubbers.
