High winds and a driving rain on Saturday

Navy 1974 was the worst. I could hardly see the field. The guy behind me had an umbrella and the water rolled off onto the back of my neck.

"The Lions out-rushed Navy 267-87 and out-passed the Midshipmen 108-84. ``The big thing that kept Navy in the game was their errors - fumbles and missed field goals.'' Playing on a sloppy field, the Lions fumbled seven times - losing five - and all-American kicker Chris Bahr missed four field goals. His final miss was a 43-yarder with just 46 seconds left in the game.
Paterno wasn't about to blame the loss on the weather.
``It rained on both sides of the field,'' Paterno said. ``At least I think it did. I wasn't over on the Navy side of the field, but it looked like it was raining over there.''

George Welsh was very familiar with Joe's style and game plan having been an assistant. That probably had as much to do with the Navy win as the weather did.

Some local trivia: Welsh lived a few blocks from Joe. When he left for Navy, a new family with little kids moved into that house. Those kids would become The Big Uglies you see on tv and in the stands.

I can remember sitting through the monsoon in 1996, I believe, when Tim Dwight ran wild and we lost. Could be mixing up the years as my memory isnt what it used to be but it was definitely Iowa and a torrential downpour the whole game.

You're spot on with the year and opponent. I was there as well and it still resides in the #1 spot for worst PSU game I've been to, mainly because of the rain and the way they lost with Dwight taking a punt back in the 2nd half.

It was 96, and it wasn't just rain, it was a cold rain. Most miserable PSU game I remember (at least the 6-4 game wasn't a bad day to tailgate).

Good. This saves me money.

My tentative itinerary was to fly out Sat morning, train to the game, train to town, dinner, train to airport, Home by 11:00.

This kind of adventure to Chicago has been probably a 10 year bucket list thing of mine. Maybe next time.

Well, I had this thought about several Iowa games in the past when weather was questionable. Having received a second chance at life through double lung transplant, I am a firm believer of never putting off something in life that you really want to do and can afford to do so. This year, we were planning on spending the weekend on our lake and watching the Iowa game on TV when Thursday evening my wife looked at me over dinner and said “screw it, its your third anniversary of your surgery, I think we should get in the car and go.” What an awesome finish on a special day in my life.

IIRC those were the remnants of Hurricane Hugo. It was sunny and in the 70's when I left for the game and by game time it was raining and cold.

Regardless of the weather, we have a lot more weapons than does Northwestern. Also, a better defense. It’s definitely an unwelcome wildcard, but I don’t see it changing the outcome. That said, if you’re a betting man, it’s one more reason not to lay 14 points -- and to take the Under!

By the way, for what it’s worth, which is probably nothing three full days out, Weather Underground predicts the worst of the rain will occur in the 1:00-3:00 timeframe, which happens to be the majority of the game.

For those old enough to remember, the mention of “driving rain” may bring back shudders to those of us who saw Navy upset highly favored Penn State in a driving rainstorm in 1974. Still can’t forget it, but I don’t see it happening again Saturday. ((Knock on wood!))
I can remember driving up from Harrisburg. Stayed for one quarter and left. Worse rain I ever attempted to sit in ! Still a fun memory.

You have a great wife KC.

It was a hell of a lot colder than 72. I think that was a mid afternoon game and I remember listening to the pre game shows and the roads on the higher elevations leading into State College were getting snow and ice.

Hugo was 88 or 89, not 96. The Hugo game was against BC. I was there too....miserable game. We scored late to win like 14-7 if my memory serves at all
Edit....just looked it up. Beat BC 7-3. Tony Sacca td run from the one with 44 seconds left was our only score

I dont know how far it is from Evanston. But I recommend Half acre brewing. They brew great stuff.

It's a pain to get to, their tap room isn't that great, and their stuff is readily available at beer stores in the area. So I'd skip the trip to the brewery and just buy some elsewhere. Especially double daisy cutter!

Thanks. I was all kinds of wrong. Except that it was really wet and cold.:)

Yes, it was '89. I was at that game, and it still stands out as one of the most fun games I ever attended as a student. It was a torrential rain but it wasn't miserably cold, the student section was half empty and it was during the era when marshmallows were thrown throughout the game. Imagine the ballistic properties of heavy water-logged marshmallows and you get the idea, it was an unholy mess. Good times.

I was there

For the record, Navy in 1974, was nearly a torrential downpour and 45 mph winds. During that game, the Navy punter had an 88 yard punt, with the wind.

15-18 mph winds are a factor, but not comparable to either the 45 mph against Navy, nor the 35 mph during the 2008 loss at Kinnick to Iowa.

It COULD affect the crowd: Ryan field doesn't ordinarily sell out anyway, and I would guess total attendance will probably be in the 35,000 neighborhood.

Little known corollary to that game.
State High played Chief Logan ( a school with enrollment of about 300 and 40 or so on the football team) on Friday night. State High was defending state champs, but lost by a 7-0 score. Matt Suhey fumbled 5 times...

I was lurking over at the NW board and saw a thread regarding weather for tomorrow's game. One person reported heavy rain with gusting winds 20 - 30 mph. Another poster said his latest report showed cloudy and wind gusts to 15 - 20 mph. What do our weather experts forecast for tomorrows game? I was wondering if the heavy rain forecast is good, does that even the field pretty much regarding both offenses?

See the other thread with 62 comments on the weather and the game that was started on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the weather channel, there is a 0% chance of rain at the beginning of the game. The chance steadily rises throughout, with an 80% chance at 4:00 PM.
