Hodge Trophy Voting Opens!!!

Will vote later...first a quick story from nationals...

At Fan Fest, the WIN Magazine booth had a Hodge Trophy Vote set up, so I already voted once...this past Friday. It consisted of a tub of jelly beans, and "voters" were allowed to take one, and drop it into one of several tubs labeled with wrestler's names. Zain received 2 votes from us. Zain's tub was 5 times or so fuller than the 2nd fullest tub.

One voter per email address, eh? That's new this year.

I'm kind of surprised to see Gross here but not Snyder. Both have a loss on the year, correct? Granted, Seth's was at a different weight.

Tom - Can you pin this up top ? Everyone keeps going in to vote for there guy...We have to beat all the others for Zain !

I thought you could only vote once per email?

Amd interesting that both Seth and Zahid are ahead, i would have expected one possibly ahead but not two.

Vote for Hodge Trophy

1. Zain's already behind! Get going!

Man, if you put an Amish hat on Nickal, he would look so dope!

Maybe I should have voted instead of eating my jelly bean! :)

Would really like to see Bo get 2nd place.
He may not take 2nd in the fan vote (PSU hate is strong nowadays), but I don't see Zahid or Gross passing him among the other voters. Too dominant, and the only other previous champ. Gross and Zahid had great years though, and next year's race is going to be intense between Jason, Bo, Zahind, and Spencer.

If Cenzo wins his 3rd in row in the arguably toughest weight class shouldn’t he at least leapfrog Zahid and Spencer on your next year list?

You can vote from multiple devices too...Please VOTE for Zain EVERYONE....
No you can't. You can only vote multiple times if you use multiple emails. They changed the system and if you actually voted and not a troll you'd know that.

As of 11:20AM: Zain 7,954 votes (51%), Gross 4,254 votes (27%), Zahid 1,848 votes (12%), Bo 1,521 votes (10%)

Depends on how he's winning. The fact that he'd be a 3 time champion would be huge, but dominance and other factors also come into play and Cenzo's probably less likely to bonus his way through the season than many or most of those other guys. God knows that I hope I'm wrong about that of course....

Yeah, my thoughts too. Cenzo can obviously pin guys, but # of pins is the second criterea, and dominance is third. He could certainly turn it on next year, and I would be oh so happy to eat crow. Plus, though not an official critera, we saw 2 years ago the "committee" likes to reward seniors, so I'd think Gross, Bo and Jason have to be the early front runners.

Anyone know how many people are on the selection committee? Wondering how impactful the fan vote is. Read this on the WIN site:

“The winner of the fan vote will earn two first-place votes among the total ballots from a group of formal voters which includes each former Hodge Trophy winner, national media, representatives of national wrestling organizations and retired former college coaches from different regions.”

Not saying we shouldn’t vote, but 2 total fan votes may be pretty diluted in the end. At least should help Zain that 3 former PSU winners (Cael, DT, and McCoy) are on the committee.

3 votes from Cael and 2 from DT would be nice,
though it doesn’t work that way.

Why wasn't Nolf on the ballot? He was basically undefeated (and only had one loss in any event, like Gross). He had more pins than Gross and Valencia and the same as Nickal. His bonus (dominance) rate was better than everyone other than Zain. His past credentials are better than Gross and Valencia. And, in terms of quality of competition, he compares favorably with the others, having beaten the #1 seed (which none of the others did), along with Kemmerer and Jordan at NCAAs. In the subjective "heart" category, you have to give him credit for wrestling with an injury. And, if there was a category for creativity, flair and pushing the sport to new heights, he would win that hand's down.

zain looking good in the fan vote.

pretty cool that he has the majority vote of the public. that the public recognizes him for all his hard work and time that he has put into the sport has to be well received by him and his family.

Maybe you can vote from Row 3 and from Row 14 and from Pegula.

Click on "Other," and write him in. Be sure to say, "Well, if you would change the award criteria, then Nolf should be on the ballot."

Last year there were 45 votes for the award, which I believe included the 2 fan votes.
The fan vote has never been a factor in choosing the winner, though I believe it did matter for 2nd place several years ago. Don't hold me to that though.

How does it work? Each voter gets a 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place and 4th Place vote. The votes are compiled, and every 1st Place vote is awarded 4 points, every 2nd Place vote is worth 3 points, 3rd's get 2, and 4th's get 1. Add the numbers up, add in the fan vote, and highest number wins.

EVERYONE PLEASE go through the criteria and VOTE.....It will do nothing but help....Son has already voted on comp and phone...Getting his buddies now....We NEED EVERYONE to VOTE....PLEASE for PSU and Zain who deserve it....

Why would they have to change the criteria? Because of one "loss"? There is no rule against losses. Moreover, Gross had one true loss and was less qualified on most of the other criteria. Please explain.

So, was just listening to a Takedown Radio (TOM) interview of Seth Gross and was surprised to hear the main host (Scott Casber?) practically declare Gross as the Hodge winner. Made me think I had missed the official announcement. Had to go to WIN to confirm that the announcement isn't until tomorrow. The host kept saying Gross is the "odds-on favorite" to win the Hodge like it's a forgone conclusion. Hard to believe Gross could be favored over Zain.

Listened to the Gross interview podcast.
At the beginning, as teasers for Gross being their next guest, before and after commercials, the broadcaster did seem to say it as you observed, that Gross was the favorite.

The broadcaster said it differently in the podcast interview. Two times he said Gross was ONE OF THE odds on favorites for the Hodge Trophy.

He also revealed that he personally voted for Gross for the Hodge. His broadcasting partner said he donates money to Gross’ So Dakota St wrestling program. They both seemed to really like that Gross turned around his life at SDS, under guidance by his coach. They did talk about competition at his weight next year. They did not talk about Gross’ wrestling record vs other Hodge candidates.

Iirc, that podcast originates out of Iowa. Gross was previously on the Iowa team, before he was dismissed from the team. Fair or not, it’s not a surprise if they have more of a homer mentality for area wrestlers and for a wrestler they probably know personally.

We will see how the voting turns out tomorrow. Hard to believe that Zain won’t win. His record is the best on the mat, he was the year’s most dominant wrestler, his academics and character are spectacular. Plus his historical body of work is sensational, with his 94 match win streak and with Zain tying the PSU all-time record for Falls.

IMHO...

May the Best Zain Win!!
