Extremely early but I already see the Hodge next year as only a two horse race.

Bo Nickal is definitely in the conversation. It will be very interesting to see if he goes 197 and if he can maintain his bonus rate at that weight class if it happens. I think he remains undefeated up there but his bonus rate will go down. I also believe Zahid wil increase his bonus rate yet again next year even if he moves up. Yanni may be on their heels but not yet fully developed.

That said that tandem will remain only honorable mention. I have no doubt two others easily distance themselves from the field.

Spencer Lee is set to go on a tear, where most of his matches may end in a fall. He is as dominant as Zain was on top and all but the most elite will end up getting turned... multiple times. The Spencer Lee that captured the national championship is not the same wrestler that started his career only 4 months earlier. It is scary to watch how fast he is developing and dominating everything in his path. The score in his final vs Suriano didn't reflect his complete control of that match, but the look on Nick's face afterwards and his near immediate references to moving up to 133 spoke volumes.

Barring injury however; even Spencer may not be able to keep up with the torrid pace Jason Nolf will set. He was neck and neck with Zain until his knee pulled him from consideration last season. I think he will be a man on a mission next season, focused on displaying just how far beyond great he really is. By most accounts the only kid (Kemmerer) who makes things interesting is moving up next year.

I'll have to admit he is my favorite all time PSU wrestler, which is saying a lot. Jason is simply a different animal than anyone else who has put on that blue and white singlet. His final season as a Lion will be something to behold where I think he is primed to bonus in every single match thoughout. Yes I said it, he has the potential to major and above everyone he faces including the Bigs and Nationals.

So there you have it: Jason, Spencer, Zahid and Bo in that order (swap Bo and Zahid if Bo doesnt move up), see you next March to say I told you so.

I imagine it is rediculously early to talk about 2019/20, but my crystal ball is indicating the first letter definitely begins with a capital "S".

I think Nolf was actually ahead of Zain last year when injured.
The Hodge is Nolf's to lose imo, but I do not see him losing it.

I'm pulling for Jason but I think Bo, Spencer or Yanni(laurel) have shots. Hoping he regains full strength in his leg.

Nolf was indeed ahead of Zain for the first full month of the season until he had that somewhat uncharacteristic match against Pantaleo. Zain then remained slightly ahead up until the injury. At that time both were comfortably ahead of Bo and the rest. Bo is more dramatic and more of a showman so it might appear he out "Bo"nuses Jason, but the reality is the opposite. Jason is most definitely our top bonus machine going into next year. He has already demonstrated he is in a class above the rest of the country, he just has to stay healthy and keep entertaining.

Prior to the Rutgers Dual, and Jason's injury, all three of Zain, Jason, and Bo were having great starts. Bo had faced the toughest competition to that point, including #5 Preisch, #8 Reenan, and #3 Abounador, while Jason had #9 Finesilver, and #7 Pantaleo, and Zain had #9 Deakin. It explains some of the bonus point differences. Can't argue that Jason isn't prolific, though the facts show Bo's closer than you suggest. Way too much variability in level of competition in the early season to make any judgments, however, especially with the truer tests (B1G Season) coming.

As far as next year, a sophomore Spencer Lee will surely be in the mix. I hope all the wrestlers have a healthy, injury-free year.

A little off-topic, but altho a couple guys commented on it, it seemed like Nolf's NCAA performance kinda got lost a bit...due to some other great wrestlers, and the fact that he wasnt the Nolf we are used to.
A tech fall in the first match, then he beat the #14, #6(Kemerer), #7, and #1 seeds, by a cumulative score of 34-5, giving up only 5 escapes; no one really cameclose to getting to his legs, which in itself shows the difference in how he was wrestling.

Just watched Nolf’s semi vs Jordan again last night. THAT sent a message. He just hammered him from the whistle

Great discussion, I'm just excited and grateful to watch next season unfold. May all these great wrestlers finish the season healthy, they're all so much fun to watch ;)

I have rewatched that match a couple times myself--Jordan looked like a high school kid against Jason.

I have been searching for that match for some time and can't find it on Flo or youtube, anyone have the URL. On Flo when i think I have found it I only see the other semi match with Hidlay unless they have gone back and fixed it. Definitely vintage Nolf even with the injury plus it seems a desire to inflict some Zain like pain. Complete domination.

Split screen, bad audio

Lee, Nolf and Nickal would all have to lose for Yanni to have a chance (not happening). Plus it would take an NCAA record pin rate for Lee to pass an undefeated Nolf or Nickal in their senior years.

Pretty sure that Dan Hodge has already reserved the trophy for Daton Fix.

Mike Evans is not impressed

I was thinking the same thing....hard to imagine an undefeated Nickal and Nolf getting passed up.

One way I could see Lee winning would be if he'd have to go thru Suriano and Fix. But it appears that Nick wants more of Lee about as much as my kids want more homework in the summertime.

So you are saying your kids don't want to take a shot either?
