So if it’s true that the school isn’t really committed to spending money to win why on earth would you pay so much to a coach to produce such mediocre results? Wouldn’t it be more fiscally responsible to buy him out and pay a young cheap coach to produce basically the same results? We are 10-9 in 2 seasons. If we split we will be 11-10. Got to be some guys who will take half or less to produce the same garbage right?

because those guys aren’t going to get you 11 win seasons in 3 out of 6?

Penn State is committed to spending money to win. Recently they renovated the locker rooms, Lasch building, and small parts of Beaver Stadium. They are paying Franklin as a top 10 coach. I have asked this question multiple times and no one can answer….what are the additional facilities and infrastructure requests that Franklin supposedly wants?

Yeah. Starting to not believe it if it’s never identified

Do you honestly believe we are set to have 11 win seasons in the near future? I can’t see it. We aren’t even close

He recruits well. Needs to have several years of top 5-10 recruiting classes in a row. We are thin in a few areas, especially on both the o and d lines where games are won and lost. We have plenty of skill and athleticism.

He seems to be involved in the community. His players for the most part behave well. If not he is a disciplinarian.

Nick Saban didn't win his first natty until his 9th season as a head coach.

CJF has been able to get facilities upgrades. Mike Y was a good hire imho. I thought he called a good game for the most part. Execution and missed opportunities were the difference today.

how could it be responsible to buy him out right now? I think it would be around 30 million this year. That would be a very dumb decision from a financial perspective
I thought read somewhere on here that it would still save money over what we would pay him the next several years. I guess the point is to invest in what he wants or get rid of him. Paying him 7+ for these results can’t be the correct path either

I assume you aren’t serious. You think the fan base is going to be happier because PSU pays its head coach less. If we had a young cheap coach at 7-5 the fans would be complaining just as loud. The money argument is total nonsense

You saw 2016 coming I guess?

With the recruiting class coming in closer with him than with whoever your discount rate coach is. This season is probably a 10-11 win season if Clifford stays healthy.

paying a coach less for the last two seasons would have fans just as annoyed and probably calling for the heads of everyone who approved the hire.

I do get that and I’m always concerned about who the replacement would be but right now this just “feels bad”. We don’t feel like a program on the cusp of greatness. Instead it’s like a repeat play of bad decisions and losses

I’m only serious if the assumption is that what the fans think is irrelevant. If that was important we wouldn’t be seeing this garbage and complaining about commitment being the cause

Beg to differ. Injuries and execution have cost us games. 3 point loss to iowa, 2 point loss to Illinois. 4 point loss to ichigan

OK let’s live on 2016 and a few special players forever. Cool

There is no way it would save money unless the replacement coach works for zero dollars.
Well he’d have to work for free until a quarter way through his 5th season to break even. So we could pay him eventually. But a coach that works for free probably isn’t winning any games so they’d never make it to that first paycheck.

let’s burn it down over a couple bad seasons instead of looking at the full sample size because db90 who probably doesn’t have major decision making power in his own organization doesn’t see future success, but also admittedly didn’t see past successes in advance. Also db90 is bad at math and thinks we can save money and pay a 30 million dollar buy out and stay bowl eligible simultaneously. Great.

this just “feels bad”.

Is execution lack of talent or coaching?
It " feels bad" because we are close

Today was mostly execution by the players. A few bad throws by Clifford. A few dropped passes. Oline gave up too many sacks today. Poor execution on fake fg. Poor execution on fg that hit the upright. Didn't take advantage of the fumble recovery inside the other teams 20 had to settle for 3 points instead or 6/7 points. Poor pass coverage by Porter today. Was involved on all 3 TDs against.

Poor coaching by faking the fg in 1st quarter. Poor coaching on the 4th and 2 fade pass to the sideline instead of a short pass to a te or Washington.

All that and we still only lost by 4.

If you care to message me to compare professional successes I’ll be glad to provide examples of how incorrect your assumptions are. I’m not into living on success from 5 years ago. Not a good recipe in business or football

neither are knee jerk reactions to one season during a pandemic and another where the starting qb was hobbled for multiple games after the backup and third string qbs had transferred out prior to the season with an incoming recruiting class that’s currently projected to be the highest rated class this millennium.

you thought we could hire someone, pay his buyout and still save money. Clearly you’re lacking some basic financial skills at the very least so kudos to overcoming them if you’ve achieved any level of success as you allude to.

lets eat the 30 million, hire someone like Chris Ash for the 2.3 million a year he was making at Rutgers, sign a class ranked around 50 or 60 and then we can all be happy? That’s basically what you’re saying you’d like to see.

Ok, but what if the game were on the road? Or what if Michigan's other running back had played? In the end it was another predictable loss, now matter anything else.

I'm frustrated as well as disappointed. Hence the losses by 2, 3 and 4 points.

No real fan likes to lose. Many had predicted 9-3 or 8-4 records losing to Wisconsin on the road. Auburn at home. theO$u and one of the ichigans.

8-4 is still possible. Rutgres is winnable. And Msu has osu next week. Should they lose a tuff one to osu we will have a punchers chance. There was a reason the line was 1.5 points today. Vegas goes by money not "eye test" polls.

We will have played 6 top 20 teams by seasons end. Not like the SEC where some of the conference's teams played cupcakes in November, essentially a bye week in a conference that only plays 8 not 9 conference games.

The 5-0 start raised our expectations. The injuries and execution (coaching/players) crushed our season. Not a reason to throw the baby out with the bath water. Realistically who would you rather have. Saban is not coming, Dabo is having a tuff year, Eddy O is out at LSU 2 years removed from a natty, Fickell is not coaching in a conference any where near the B1G east division. The coach many seem to believe that is out there is a unicorn.

Not good enough. Franklin struck lightening with SB, TMcS and JM. He has lost his edge since. There comes a time to preserve the brand. Should CJF come out sleep walking next year Sandy should pull the plug. If she doesn't then fire her first.

ESPN Crawler: "Nine consecutive losses against AP Top 10 teams under Franklin."

Stop sugar-coating it. It is what it is. Thank you.

True, if my grandmother had wheels she'd be a wagon. If my uncle had tits he'd be my aunt. And for all the predictions of another loss we had opportunities to win the game deep into the 4th quarter

We ain't beating MSU. 7-5. Not good. We are stuck with Franklin so hopefully he pulls it together over the next couple of years.

This is a shared loss, bad coaching and poor execution. We cannot make clutch plays and that is as much player execution but also coaching. Pry calls the wrong defense and we get burned for a 47 yard TD to a guy on a gimpy ankle but is so wide open he was in his own zip code. Can't make this crap up. Call a fake FG, why?

All part of football which good winning teams manage to overcome.
We are what our record says we are. Not a good winning team right now for sure. Not getting blown out either. We have not been able to overcome some of the details that separate the good, from the bad.

A true freshman CB, playing because another starter was injured, ran into one of his own players resulting in the winning TD. Did you actually watch the game?

For the record I tried to engage in dialogue about a question. You attacked me and questioned my intelligence and person. Tells me you are small, weak person. I invited you to personal dialogue and you refused. Weak.

You’re the one suggesting we fire the coach, eat a massive buy out and hire someone cut rate with the explicit expectation that they have a ceiling of mediocre. You claim to want to win yet your solution is for the exact opposite.

bless us with your brilliance and give us the path to multiple 11 win seasons. Name a coach. Better be someone with a higher winning percentage than Franklin, can’t have any losers like him. Name a salary.

Are you freakin kidding wrt “Mike Y”. Fran Ganter was twice the OC Yurcich is. Ganter and Bradley/Sandusky were comparative halftime geniuses compared to what we have now. I don’t know how many times we used to come out in the second half after making some adjustments, and then kicking some second half a$$.

Yurcich had absolutely NO Plan B at Iowa. And then, after two weeks to get his act together against one of the worst teams in the Conference, he sends out a crippled QB that can’t run or throw. Today, we looked like a freakin mess on offense.

Lee probably looked better today than any of our backs have looked all year against good competition. But that ain’t saying much. Lee is slow as molasses and finally realized how to make his own holes at times. But it has taken him 10 games. If I see another of our RBs try to dance instead of making their own holes like they used to in years past, I’m going to freakin scream.

Everyone on this offense seems to have regressed as the season has worn on with the possible exception of Lee.

Defense is better than offense, but that ain’t saying much. In my opinion, this freakin “targeting” rule has turned everyone into being scared sh!tless to make a tackle. Joe is probably turning in his grave.

The lack of a Big Ten OL and OL coach is Franklin's ultimate failing and one that has caused our losses against the top teams. Until that is fixed - mediocrity;
